The war on Iraq has made moral cowards of us all
by Scott Ritter
The full scale of the human cost already paid for the war on Iraq is only now becoming clear. Last week’s estimate by investigators, using credible methodology, that more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians - most of them women and children - have died since the US-led invasion is a profound moral indictment of our countries. The US and British governments quickly moved to cast doubt on the Lancet medical journal findings, citing (…)

Stephen Hawking, Britain’s most eminent scientist, has become the latest prominent opponent of the Iraq war by agreeing to take the lead role in a ceremonial protest to coincide with the United States presidential election.
Peace protesters will gather in Trafalgar Square at 5pm on Tuesday, where they will read out the names of 5,000 Iraqi men, women and children known to have died in the conflict.
The full death toll was put last week as high as 100,000.

By Alistair Lyon
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. forces battled rebels in Ramadi and pounded Falluja on Monday, but there was no sign that an all-out American-led offensive to retake the insurgent-held cities had begun on the eve of the U.S. presidential election.
Kidnappers armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades seized an American, a Nepali and two Arabs from their Saudi company’s office in Baghdad, the Interior Ministry said.
A spokesman said the attackers killed a guard (…) -

IAEA says it warned U.S. about explosives
by OfficialWire NewsDesk
WASHINGTON, D.C. — (OfficialWire) — 10/30/04 — New evidence emerged in the United States on Friday that appears to contradict claims by George W. Bush and his administration that some 360 tons of explosives previously located in Iraq were looted before U.S. troops occupied the country. Nine days after the fall of Baghdad, on April 18, 2003, a news crew from Minneapolis-St Paul station KSTP-TV, embedded with U.S. troops (…) -
American attack on Fallujah looms as 63 are killed in Iraq’s weekend of clashes
1 November 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
By Kim Sengupta in Baghdad
A final assault on the rebel city of Fallujah appeared imminent yesterday after Iyad Allawi, Iraq’s interim Prime Minister, said chances of a peaceful solution had virtually ended and warned of civilian casualties.
"Our patience is running thin," Mr Allawi said. If no deal was reached, he added: "I have no choice but to secure a military solution. I do so with a heavy heart, for even with the most careful plan there will be some loss of innocent lives. But I (…) -
Iraq Awash in Arms Sites, Some Unguarded
1 November 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
by WILLIAM J. KOLE
VIENNA, Austria - From the deserts of the south and west to the outskirts of Baghdad, Iraq is awash in weapons sites - some large, others small; some guarded, others not. Even after the U.S. military secured some 400,000 tons of munitions, as many as 250,000 tons remain unaccounted for.
Attention has focused on the al-Qaqaa site south of Baghdad, where 377 tons of explosives are believed to have gone missing - becoming a heated issue in the final days of the U.S. (…) -
2 More Iraq Arms Stashes In Focus
1 November 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
Looters unleashed last year by the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq overran a sprawling desert complex where a bunker sealed by U.N. monitors held old chemical weapons, American arms inspectors report.
Charles Duelfer’s arms teams say all U.N.-sealed structures at the Muthanna site were broken into. If the so-called Bunker 2 was breached and looted, it would be a new case of restricted weapons being at risk of having fallen into militants’ hands.
Separately, Human Rights Watch said Saturday it (…) -
U.S. left ammo site unguarded

by MIKE FRANCIS
Six months after the fall of Baghdad, a vast Iraqi weapons depot with tens of thousands of artillery rounds and other explosives remained unguarded, according to two U.S. aid workers who say they reported looting of the site to U.S. military officials.
The aid workers say they informed Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, the highest ranking Army officer in Iraq in October 2003 but were told that the United States did not have enough troops to seal off the facility, which (…) -
