The traditional alliance of the British crown with its former American colony, an alliance that served as a foundation for the British foreign policy during the times of Winston Churchill and also Margaret Thatcher, is called into question today. In effect, the United Kingdom has no other option than choosing between its Atlantist commitment and its European interests. However, as Cedric Housez notes while analyzing statements by British leaders, they reject this choice. Today’s criticism of (…)

The Opposite of Good is Apathy
6 January 2006"The apathy of the people is enough to make every statue leap from its pedestal and hasten the resurrection of the dead." William Lord Garrison
The apathy of most of America is stunning and appalling to me. When I found this quote I was filled with wide-eyed wonder that there is one statue left in America complete with statue, or one grave or tomb still occupied.
On October 26th, as MoveOn.org was holding its candlelight vigils across the country to mourn the death of the 2000 th (…) -

YOU CAN’T GO HOME AGAIN...
6 January 2006By Sheila Samples
January 5th was the bloodiest day in Iraq since Bush’s illegal invasion. As many as 140 were killed, including 11 US servicemen, and many more injured. Bush responded by suddenly summoning all living secretaries of state and defense to the White House for a skull session and photo op on what to do in the Middle East before he is completely overtaken by even more catastrophic success. He’s willing to share the glory, and said he would "listen and take to heart" any (…) -

Ariel Sharon. Who gives a damn?
6 January 2006All over the news is Ariel Sharon. Why? Because he’s the leader of Israel? So what? Is Israel the center of the universe? How many Jews are there in the USA? When a black or hispanic leader, either here or in Africa or South America, falls ill or dies the US media barely notices, though the population is more black and Hispanic than it is Jewish.
The truth is that the Jews have long had a stranglehold over US media and this shameless harping on the importance of Ariel Sharon is just (…) -
Rediscovered testimony given by CIA director in 2001 suggests manipulation of pre-war intelligence
6 January 2006By Jason Leopold
President George W. Bush’s attempt Friday to silence critics who say his administration manipulated prewar intelligence on Iraq is undercut by congressional testimony given in February 2001 by former CIA Director George Tenet, who said that Iraq posed no immediate threat to the United States or other countries in the Middle East.
Details of Tenet’s testimony have not been reported before.
Since a criminal indictment was handed up last month against Vice President Dick (…) -
Afghanistan: The NATO Quagmire
6 January 2006by Sarah Meyer Index Research
The NATO merry-go-round in Afghanistan, driven by America’s announced withdrawal of 2,500 - 4,000 (of 19,500) troops in the spring of 2006, is in overdrive. The New York Times, in a recent article said that “Britain and the Netherlands will join Canada in assuming control in the south, along with a much smaller contingent of American support troops.” This is incorrect.
The Dutch government is in disarray about its NATO participation in Afghanistan, and (…) -
Powerful Government Accountability Office Report confirms Key 2004 Stolen Election Findings
5 January 2006by Bob Fitrakis & Harvey Wasserman October 26, 2005
As a legal noose appears to be tightening around the Bush/Cheney/Rove inner circle, a shocking government report shows the floor under the legitimacy of their alleged election to the White House is crumbling.
The latest critical confirmation of key indicators that the election of 2004 was stolen comes in an extremely powerful, penetrating report from the Government Accountability Office that has gotten virtually no mainstream media (…) -
The death of freedom
5 January 2006The rights of ordinary people to speak out against an unjust war and atrocities unleashed in their name are being crushed. Fascism is at the door. Who else will fight it?
On Christmas Eve, I dropped in on Brian Haw, whose hunched, pacing figure was just visible through the freezing fog. For four and a half years, Brian has camped in Parliament Square with a graphic display of photographs that show the terror and suffering imposed on Iraqi children by British policies. The effectiveness of (…)
