The Peaceful Occupation of Crawford (Day 21)
29 August 2005by Cindy Sheehan, Crawford, Texas
A photographer friend of mine went down to Crawford to the Pro-War, Anti-Peace rally today. There were about 1500 people there he said. He also said that it was the most "third reich" spectacle that he had ever seen in America.
My friend said that the speakers were whipping up the crowd into a frenzy of hatred for me (like they already didn’t hate me?) and for the peace movement. My friend said that the entire theme of the rally was: "Cindy is killing (…) -
Exclusive: Downing Street reporter dissects pre-war Iraq intelligence
29 August 2005by Michael Smith
Details ’chill factor’ imposed around Iraq intelligence; Putting Downing Street docs in perspective
LONDON — "The [U.S. WMD] Commission found no evidence of political pressure to influence the Intelligence Community’s pre-war assessment of Iraq’s weapons programs."
That is only one of a number of strange conclusions by those charged with investigating the way flaky intelligence was used to justify the 2003 Iraq War.
The most vociferous advocates of an attack on Iraq (…) -
September 11, 2001 : ANYONE LISTENING?
29 August 2005By William Fisher
On September 11, 2001, a New York City police helicopter hovered above the World Trade Center.
Two minutes earlier, the first of the twin towers had collapsed. It would be twenty-one minutes before the second tower was to collapse.
“About 15 floors down from the top, it looks like it’s glowing red,” the pilot of one helicopter radioed. “It’s inevitable.”
Seconds later a second pilot radioed, “I don’t think (the second tower) has too much longer to go. I would (…) -
Breakaway Union Leaders Outline Strategy
29 August 2005By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) — Unions that broke away from the AFL-CIO hope to rebuild the tattered labor movement by targeting workers in growing industries such as health care, waste management and security.
’’We want to identify jobs that can’t be shipped overseas,’’ Teamsters President James Hoffa said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday.
The targeted industries, which also include food service and businesses that cater to retirees, account for 30 million (…) -
Galloway to go on anti-war tour of US with Jane Fonda
29 August 2005By Andrew Buncombe
George Galloway, the anti-war MP for Bethnal Green and Bow who rocked the US Senate earlier this year, is to be accompanied on a speaking tour of America by the actress and activist Jane Fonda.
Few things are more likely to antagonise US conservatives than the combination of Mr Galloway and Ms Fonda - still hated by the right because of her outspoken opposition to the war in Vietnam - joining to condemn the American presence in Iraq. But Mr Galloway can expect a (…) -
Crawford Peace House takes donations meant for Cindy Sheehan and protesters and pays off mortgage
28 August 2005Does anyone else think this is a little selfish? How can they feel good about taking the donations and paying off their mortgage even before the protest is over? It sort of seems like the mentality of a repubican, to always think of themselves first.
They could have instead used the protest money to rent more camping and parking space to enable the protest to grow. Instead they were sending folks away.
"According to Ann Wright, camp coordinator, they are thrilled with the number of (…) -
Democrats, take a stand
28 August 2005by Helen Thomas
WASHINGTON - It’s time for the Democratic Party to take a courageous stand and call for the withdrawal of troops from the senseless war in Iraq.
Its human cost and the billion-dollar a week tab in Iraq should give all Americans pause.
Would the Republicans have hesitated to challenge the Democrats if the shoe was on the other foot? Did the opposition party give former President Bill Clinton any slack while he was in office?
What is the logic of Sens. Hillary Clinton, (…) -
The Peaceful Occupation of Crawford: Exhaustion
27 August 2005by Cindy Sheehan
I finally figured out George Bush’s NEW reason for staying in Iraq. This reason has also been co-opted by the Move America Forward (forward to what: Fascism?) and the poor mothers who would be honored if their sons were killed in George Bush’s war for greed and power.
Since the Freedom and Democracy thing is not going so well and the Iraqi parliament is having such a hard time writing their constitution, since violence is mounting against Iraqis and Americans, and since (…) -
News Story With Allegations of CIA Crime Disappears
27 August 2005Michael P. Wright — Norman, Oklahoma mpwright9@aol.com
In May 2004, Iowa television station KWWL broadcast an explosive report about the CIA and placed it online. The headline was "New Leads Implicate CIA, Government Officials In Child Prostitution Ring."
The report was about Johnny Gosch, an 11-year-old newspaper delivery boy, living in Iowa, who was kidnapped in 1982. The crime is being investigated by former New York City detective James Rothstein, who believes that child (…)
