Brown has to stop sitting on his hands, halt British weapons exports and insist the EU do the same
by Nick Clegg
The world watched in horror yesterday as the conflict in Gaza claimed its latest innocent victims in the rubble of a UN school. Any hopes of reconciliation are being snuffed out as anger spills into protests around the world.
The past two weeks have been a telling indictment of the international community. We have an outgoing US president sanctioning Israel’s military (…)

The Afghan Scam: Why the U.S. Is Certain to Fail in Yet Another War
15 January 2009It’s hard to overstate the magnitude of the failure of American reconstruction in Afghanistan. While the U.S. has occupied the country — for seven years and counting — and efficiently set up a network of bases and prisons, it has yet to restore to Kabul, the capital, a mud brick city slightly more populous than Houston, a single one of the public services its citizens used to enjoy. The problem is not simply that the Bush administration skimped on aid, but that it set up a system to transfer (…)

Hamas puts Israeli casualties at 360
14 January 2009The Hamas military wing says its fighters have killed or injured at least 360 Israeli soldiers since the start of Operation Cast Lead.
The al-Qassam Brigades announced Wednesday that its fighters have so far killed 40 Israeli officers and soldiers; injuring 320 others since Israel launched a military campaign in the densely-populated Gaza Strip on December 27, Al-Aqsa TV station reported.
Tel Aviv says it launched the aggression against Gaza to put an end to rocket attacks against (…) -
FINANCE-US: AIG’s Past Could Return To Haunt
14 January 2009With nearly 80 percent of AIG stock the U.S. is in a unique position to investigate the internal operations of a giant corporation with a reputation for using the offshore system for tax evasion.
By Lucy Komisar*
NEW YORK, Dec 19 (IPS) - The U.S. will invest 40 billion dollars in American International Group (AIG), and will provide credit lines that could bring federal funding up to 144 billion dollars. It’s the largest subsidy that a U.S. corporation has ever received.

YES GEORGE, YOU SERVED YOUR MASTER WELL
14 January 2009Now George it is over. Your Faustian deal gave you eight years of illegal and undeserved power.
And did you make the most of it! You stole elections without hesitation, you lied without compunction, you started illegal wars without any consideration for international law, you shredded the Constitution without any respect for the check-and-balance system, you opened up concentration camps without any concern for the rule of law, and you maimed, tortured, and murdered without any regard (…) -

The Grand Hotel Intercontinental cancels the Israeli Tourism Fair
14 January 2009The Grand Hotel Intercontinental cancels the Israeli Tourism Fair
Confronted with the indignation expressed by so many people in France and abroad who had heard about the scheduled Israeli Tourism Fair in this great Parisian hotel, the management of this establishment has made the decision to cancel this event, which was supposed to open on January 15.
The hotel’s management, as the Paris police prefecture has confirmed to us, has indicated that it has disinvited the 50 Israeli (…) -

I Don’t Care! I Have to Talk to Him Now!
13 January 2009Olmert says call forced Bush to change U.N. vote, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice "shamed"...
"He gave an order to the secretary of state and she did not vote in favour of it — a resolution she cooked up, phrased, organised and manoeuvred for. She was left pretty shamed and abstained on a resolution she arranged," Olmert said.
Fourteen of the Security Council’s 15 members supported the resolution, which has failed to halt Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip and Hamas’s cross-border (…)
