Editorial: Lives On Line
9 July 2006Editorial: Lives On Line 9 July 2006 Engineers at NASA are not expected to reveal their conclusions about possible lethal damage to the space shuttle Discovery’s heat shield until later today at the earliest. There is understandably considerable concern that protective foam, again seen breaking away at launch from the first stage rocket, may have damaged the shuttle’s heat shield. It was just such a mishap that led to the destruction of the Columbia upon re-entry in 2003.
That disaster (…) -

Dumb and Dumber Go To Medical School? Larry C. Johnson Saturday, 08 July 2006 at 19:12
I recall fondly the flick, Dumb and Dumber, which was set largely in the post card tableau of Aspen. Are we ready for the sequel? This AP photo is flipping hysterical. Maybe these guys are the final applicants to replace Igor. Two half-wits for the price of one?

Bush Or Keller? Who Do You Trust?
9 July 2006Bush Or Keller? Who Do You Trust? By Jack Shafer Posted Thursday, July 6, 2006, at 10:56 PM ET When governments acquire emergency powers during wartime, it’s with the understanding that the crisis is finite and that when the war ends the government will relinquish those powers. But what happens when a government defines its war as neverending, as the Bush administration has its so-called "war on terror"? As long as any jihadist anywhere threatens the West, the administration would have us (…)

Censoring The Military Embeds
9 July 2006Censoring The Military Embeds Posted by Bradford Plumer 0/07/2006 One could devote a lifetime-or at least the better part of a year-to chronicling all the propaganda-like tricks the Bush administration and the military have pursued over the past few years. Here’s a new one, courtesy of Rod Norland, Newsweek’s former bureau chief:
The military has started censoring many [embedded reporting] arrangements. Before a journalist is allowed to go on an embed now, [the military] check[s] the (…) -
Cheney Behind Turn Toward Dictatorship
9 July 2006Cheney Behind Turn Toward Dictatorship Andrew Greeley First published: Friday, July 7, 2006 In the winter of 1933, before Franklin Roosevelt’s first inauguration on March 4, there was a clamor in the United States for a military dictatorship. The banks were closing, a quarter of Americans were unemployed, rebellion threatened on the farms. Only drastic reforms, mandated by the president’s power as commander in chief, would save the country. Something like the fascism of Mussolini’s (…)

Breakthrough On The Niger Documents?
9 July 2006Breakthrough On The Niger Documents? By Larry C Johnson Friday, 07 July 2006 at 18:35 The defeat of Silvio Berlusconi and the election of Silvio Prodi has changed the political dynamics in Italy and opened a door that may lead to some significant progress in identifying the origin of the fraudulent Niger documents.
Phil Giraldi, a retired CIA intelligence officer and longtime Italy hand, penned the following analysis (and has kindly given me permission to post here):
The arrest of two (…)
