"Refugees and Refugee Rights in Europe"
Conference and Workshop - Rome, 14-15 June 2004
University of Rome "La Sapienza"
Faculty of Scienze Politiche

With a global total of over 20 million refugees, a larger number of unregistered and internally displaced forced migrants, and repeated large scale emergencies, forced displacement is a critical and specialised field of academic inquiry and policy. In recent years, global migration and the large scale influx of refuges and asylum seekers to the north has introduced new dynamics into the refugee regime. A more restrictive attitude to refugees world-wide is apparent.

"Refugees and Refugee Rights in Europe" aims to promote a better understanding of refugee issues in the EU and in Italy, in particular ; and to provide a space for discussion between scholars and researchers as well as NGOs, case workers and civil servants on current issues on asylum and refugee integration.

The project comprehends two main initiatives :

A conference opened to the general public covering refugee issues in Europe. Keynote speakers : Prof Roger Zetter (Oxoford Brookes University), Prof. Marcello Natale (University of Rome), Prof. Maria Rita Saulle (University of Rome), UNHRC.
A workshop for experts and practitioners focused on integration policy and practice in EU member states. The workshop is divided in two sessions : a) "Who does integration ? Actors and practice of refugee integration" ; b) "What integration ? Criteria of definition and methods of analysis".
Working languages :
Italian (however, some materials and presentations will be in English)

Conference and workshop charge : Free

Deadline : May 30, 2004
