A woman walks in the flooded streets of the 9th Ward of New Orleans
By Evan Thomas Newsweek
Sept. 19, 2005 issue - It’s a standing joke among the president’s top aides: who gets to deliver the bad news? Warm and hearty in public, Bush can be cold and snappish in private, and aides sometimes cringe before the displeasure of the president of the United States, (…) -

I started my career in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

11 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsAs the situation grew steadily worse in New Orleans last week, you might have wondered why people didn’t just leave on foot. The Louisiana Superdome is less than two miles from a bridge that leads over the Mississippi River out of the city.
The answer: Any crowd that tried to do so was met by suburban police, some of whom fired guns to disperse the group and seized their water.
Around 500 people stuck in downtown New Orleans after the storm banded together for self-preservation, making (…) -

Overkill: Feared Blackwater Mercenaries Deploy in New Orleans
11 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsNEW ORLEANS — Heavily armed paramilitary mercenaries from the Blackwater private security firm, infamous for their work in Iraq, are openly patrolling the streets of New Orleans. Some of the mercenaries say they have been "deputized" by the Louisiana governor; indeed some are wearing gold Louisiana state law enforcement badges on their chests and Blackwater photo identification cards on their arms. They say they are on contract with the Department of Homeland Security and have been given the (…)

Many Americans would like to see George Bush impeached, but the U.S. Constitution also provides other machinery for removing him from office. That would be the 25th Amendment, proposed by Congress and enacted after the Kennedy assassination. It provides for the orderly removal of a President if he becomes disabled to the degree that he cannot fulfull his responsiblities. Go here for the text of the Amendment and annotations: (…) -
With the poor gone, developers are planning to gentrify New Orleans
10 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
8 commentsby Naomi Klein
On September 4, six days after Katrina hit, I saw the first glimmer of hope. "The people of New Orleans will not go quietly into the night, scattering across this country to become homeless in countless other cities while federal relief funds are funnelled into rebuilding casinos, hotels, chemical plants. We will not stand idly by while this disaster is used as an opportunity to replace our homes with newly built mansions and condos in a gentrified New Orleans."

The time to act is now. Bush Administration must be prosecuted
10 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsby Viggo Mortensen
In the often and rightly quoted words of Bill Clinton, "There’s nothing wrong with America that can’t be fixed by what’s right with America." We see now how individuals and groups around the country continue to act in any way they can to help their fellow citizens in Louisiana, Mississippi and other devastated places near the Gulf of Mexico. They refuse to stand idly by and wait for President Bush and his morally-bankrupt, pirate administration to respond in an (…)
