Stay United! - A Letter To OWS Movement In NYC From A Supporter
by Dr.C. - Open-Publishing - Monday 7 November 2011
The report of Fritz Tucker “Chill Descends on Occupy Wall Street” (Countercurrents.org,04 November, 2011), which informs about a serious split within the movement is very upsetting. I am one of the supporters who comes to the Liberty Square maybe once, twice a week, essentially just to enjoy the spirit of the event and renew the hope; I was on Oct. 15 on the Times Square and delighted in the revolution/party that was happening there; I am organizing a OWS teach-in the college I work.
Stay united!- I would like to say to the occupiers.
Both of you, General Assembly and Spokes Council stand on a valid principle: direct democracy of General Assembly, and efficiency and effectiveness to work towards a goal, of Spokes Council. Both principles, although seemingly exclusive, are necessary and equally important for the success of a revolution. Therefore they can’t be dealt with either/or principle made famous by “To be or not to be” of Hamlet in 16 and 17 century. In the 21 century (400 to 500 years later) we need however, a new approach proclaimed by the Schrodinger Cat of the Quantum World for whom the reality is hidden in the statement: “To be AND not to be”. That is the real question of the 21 century.
That is, one doesn’t seek any more “either direct democracy or effectiveness” but one constructs “direct democracy and effectiveness” – a new state of being. How to do it? - is one of the more pressing questions and problems to solve of OWS in New York City, and everywhere else.
The events of the sixties, the first in the series of 3 mentioned by Shepherd Bliss in the Countercurrents 04,November 2011 issue, "Chicago 1968, Seattle 1999 and Occupy 2011", have left for us a useful tool to construct the unity between opposing principles: “compromise – a composition of two rival principles in which part of each is sacrificed to make the composition possible” (Webster Library of Universal Knowledge, 1969).
Hence the real task in front of OWS in NYC is to construct a fair, truthful, honest compromise between General Assembly and Spokes Council in order to increase the efficiency of the OWS movement in the context of its direct democracy. That would be really something!
Both of them stand on equally important to revolution principles, hence it is not any more who whom but who with whom.
Stay united while recognizing each other’s originality and importance in the scheme of things!
My best
