Nassim Nicholas Taleb: The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable (April 2007)
For the last 12 years, I have been telling anyone who would listen to me that we are taking huge risks and massive exposure to rare events. I isolated some areas in which people make bogus claims —epistemologically unsound. The Black Swan is a philosophy book (epistemology, philosophy of history & philosophy of science), but I used banks as a particularly worrisome case of epistemic arrogance —and (…) -

HORNY OLD MEN AND FEMININE WILES
By Peter Fredson November 3, 2008
It is November and the rutting season for bull moose has begun. They will bellow, wave antlers, paw the ground, and run amuck at the first glimpse of a rival. It is their nature. Or, more aptly, it is nature’s way of reproducing their species. They can’t resist.
Although civilization has tamed human desires, it has not obliterated them. Males will still be entranced by female beauty and feminine wiles. Winks, nods, (…) -

With the economy the number one issue on the campaign trail, major party candidates John McCain and Barack Obama discuss their tax plans, jobs and the financial bailout on the stump. But are they really addressing the needs of the working class? A new study from the Center for the Study of Working Class Life suggests that neither McCain nor Obama have adequately spoken to the needs of one-fifth of the population—the 60 million Americans who are barely (…) -

A Single Lifetime

Surviving to over age 50 is no major accomplishment, in and of itself. It’s only a chance to see things and experience things, and sadly, most of it for the worse. As a child, playing in the sun was not seen as a danger; the polar ice caps weren’t melting, or at least we didn’t know about it yet. Gasoline was .29 cents a gallon and seat belts were a novelty only required in the front seat.
But I started life on a wholly segregated, post-World War II street, in a (…) -

“Politics has become so expensive that it takes a lot of money even to be defeated.” - Will Rogers
Back in the late 50s, I was an aide-de-camp to the Hon. Michael J. “Iron Mike” McHale, 6th District City Councilman in Baltimore City. Around that time, there was a hotly contested citywide municipal election going on. McHale, now deceased, went to a meeting with the then leader of his South Baltimore organization, Julian “Fats” Carrick. They met in a downtown office, with Philip H. (…) -
The Bush-Obama-McCain Administration

The Bush-Obama-McCain Administration
The period we’re living in now is the Bush-Obama-McCain Administration.
Bush obligingly initiated Obama’s bombing campaign on Pakistan. The three of them colluded on the recent wealth transfer (about $840 billion) from the American people to Wall St.
The 24 hr/7 days/wk media Wurlitzer distracts us from looking at these white elephants too closely. The circus is so loud and visually entraining that it hides the deeper structure of society. The U.S. (…)
