Where Bush’s Arrogance Has Taken US
By Jim Hightower, Hightower Lowdown. Posted August 23, 2006.
An illegal war, a long list of eroded rights, and a country run by and for the benefit of corporate campaign donors — all courtesy of the imperial presidency.
During his gubernatorial days in Texas, George W let slip a one-sentence thought that unintentionally gave us a peek into his political soul. In hindsight, it should’ve been loudly broadcast all across our land so people could’ve (…) -

The negative return economy: a discourse on America’s black budget

1 commentAmerica now is Germany then: Analogies
The German people of the late 1930s imagined themselves to be brave. They saw themselves as the heroic Germans depicted by the Wagnerian Operas, the descendants of the fierce Germanic warriors who had hunted wild boar with nothing but spears and who had defeated three of Rome’s mightiest legions in the Tuetenberg Forest.
But in truth, by the 1930s, the German people had become civilized and tamed, culturally obsessed with fine details in both (…) -

Grand Theft America Financial Crime of the Century
The crime of the century. The greatest one ever. Author Danny Schechter calls it "Plunder." The title of his important new book on the subprime and overall financial crisis. Economist Michael Hudson and others refer to a kleptocracy. A Ponzi scheme writ large. Maybe an out-of-control Andromeda Strain. An economic one. Deadly. Unrecallable. Science fiction now real life. Potentially catastrophic. World (…) -

September 29, 2008: Among the financial methods that have been used to dangerous effect in the current global financial crisis has been “short selling”, a favourite and routine practice of speculators to make quick profits by targeting vulnerable companies and institutions.
It is ironic that the huge Wall Street investment banks as well as commercial banks such as HBOS were among the victims of the speculators who used (…) -

I was talking to my son yesterday about the economy and politics in general. He’s twenty-three, self-employed, and ambitious. Even as a child he was ambitious. “Dad,” he’d say, “can I borrow the lawnmower?” Then he’d come back at sundown with $150.00. He never cared for cartoons, video games, or school but his one weakness was the Three Stooges, the originals with Curly not Shemp. He was a purist and Shemp was no Curly, just as Dan Quayle was no Jack Kennedy.
But as we (…)
