Baltimore, MD - They met in one of this city’s swankiest hotels. It’s a Marriott, located on the waterfront, just east of Harborplace, where the per diem rates begin at $260. I just can’t imagine Jesus and the Apostles hanging out at a place like that discussing their soul-awakening agenda. But, there they were—the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, all 220, in their expensive silk suits—holding their annual confab. I think they like the digs, since they were there last year, too. In a (…)

The jigsaw puzzle is nearly finished
17 November 2007 par (Open-Publishing)
6 commentsI’m feeling more and more like a person about to complete the assembly of a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece of information I discover about the economy, the environment, resource depletion, diseases, business, and politics is like a piece of the jigsaw puzzle. The puzzle is nearly finished in my mind, and what I see is frightening as hell.
The global economy is being destroyed, starting with the U.S. Why? Partly to enrich the wealthy elites – they benefit by hoarding valuable assets as the (…) -

“It has been a long-established custom for the President of the United States to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans’ Day.
This year, however, Bush did not lay the wreath but went to Texas on a vacation instead, leaving the ceremony to Vice President Cheney. Was this simple arrogance? Or stupidity? Neither. It is the story inside the White House that the (…) -

In Ron Paul Coins, Federal Agents Don’t Trust
As if Ron Paul’s supporters needed any more motivation to storm the battlements and wreak havoc on the Republican presidential primary, now comes this: the feds are trying to take away their money.
Federal agents on Wednesday raided the Evansville, Indiana headquarters of the National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve and Internal Revenue Codes (NORFED), an organization of "sound money" advocates that for the past decade has (…) -
THE MAN WHO BOMBED HIROSHIMA

5 commentsby Anthony Gregory
The man who flew the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima passed away last week at the age of 92. Paul Warfield Tibbets, Jr. did not die from war wounds or violently at the hands of other people, years before his time. He died in hospice care, in a bed, from heart problems and strokes.
In stark contrast, the more than 100,000 civilians who were killed at Hiroshima 62 years ago were burnt, melted, vaporized, in an apocalyptic act of warfare. Many died (…) -
HILLARY CLINTON IN ARKANSAS- THE SEEDS OF CORRUPTION By JEFFREY ST CLAIR AND ALEX COCKBURN

COUNTERPUNCH
Second in a three-part series.
In 1990, the National Law Journal ran profiles of "the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in the United States". Hillary Clinton was on the list, and for years she would publicly boast that the Journal had named her one of "the nation’s 100 top lawyers". Finally, the editor of the National Law Journal, Patrick Oster, wrote to Arkansas’ first lady—as she still was in 1991—testily pointing out that the word "influential" is not synonymous with "top" or (…) -

1/15/07 "ICH" — — On Remembrance Day 2007 – Veterans Day in America – the great and the good bowed their heads at the Cenotaph. Generals, politicians, newsreaders, football managers and stock-market traders wore their poppies. Hypocrisy was a presence. No one mentioned Iraq. No one uttered the slightest remorse for the fallen of that country. No one read the forbidden list.
The forbidden list documents, without favor, the part the British state and its court have (…) -

The core inflation rate as provided by the ever so trustworthy Bush Department of Labor is 3.5%. Which is what leads me to ask, What Planet are they living on? Doing the grocery shopping I’ve seen prices rise multiples of the stated 3.5% buying the store brand hamburger buns that last year were a dollar this year are a $1.29. Frozen waffles last year $2.00 this year $2.49 frozen pizza’s last year 3 for $10.00 this year 2 for $7.00 and on (…) -

The inner workings of the Guantánamo detention camp, ranging from items allowed in cells to how many witnesses should be present for cavity searches, have been revealed in a Pentagon manual leaked on the internet.
The manual covers almost every aspect of life at the base, from arrival to burial - with a graphic showing how Muslims should be buried.
Although the manual dates from 2003, the year after the camp at the US navy base in Cuba opened and before some changes (…) -
Red Cross Monitors Barred From Guantánamo
16 November 2007 par (Open-Publishing)
By WILLIAM GLABERSON
A confidential 2003 manual for operating the Guantánamo detention center shows that military officials had a policy of denying detainees access to independent monitors from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The manual said one goal was to “exploit the disorientation and disorganization felt by a newly arrived detainee,” by denying access to the Koran and by preventing visits with Red Cross representatives, who have a long history of monitoring the (…)
