Last year Hurricanes Katrina and Rita pounded Louisiana with a horrible one-two punch of destruction. This year, it’s just possible that Louisiana will send forth its own hurricane: a political hurricane to create a more representative democracy in America.
On May 10, a Louisiana house committee approved the National Popular Vote plan for presidential elections. If signed into law, it would make Louisiana the first of what promises to be dozens of states entering into an (…)

4 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)

WASHINGTON - A dramatic shift of funds and priorities is needed to stem the tide of the global AIDS pandemic, said women’s health advocates in Washington, DC last week, marking the 25th anniversary of the disease’s discovery.
As world leaders convene in New York for a United Nations meeting to review progress on a 2001 commitment to fight the disease, the activists from Zimbabwe, Kenya, and the United States said that since HIV and AIDS tend to target women more than (…) -

4 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
By MIKE BAKER
RALEIGH, N.C. — A state-appointed commission is urging North Carolina to provide reparations for the 1898 racial violence that sparked an exodus of more than 2,000 black residents from Wilmington.
The 500-page report that was produced after six years of study also said the violence, which killed as many as 60 people, was not a spontaneous riot but rather the nation’s only recorded coup d’etat.
"There is no amount of money that can repair what happened years ago and (…) -
Anti-War Protests Continue At Port Of Olympia

OLYMPIA - A protest became a melee on Olympia’s waterfront Tuesday as sheriff’s deputies arrested 22 people who stormed the port’s gate. And war protesters were back on the line Wednesday night — as are the deputies.
The protesters hope to disrupt shipments of war supplies heading to Iraq.
For more than a week, the two sides have held their ground on Olympia’s waterfront. The military transport ship Pomeroy continues to load cargo bound for Iraq, including Stryker (…) -
WAR PROFITEERING: A familiar song!
4 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
7 commentsWe all know what war is about: M.O.N.E.Y. Here is a familiar tune (you can find some music, I’m sure). When you wish upon a star it makes a difference who you are Only if you pay the price do dreams come true. If you donate to the "team" no war profit’s too extreme When you wish (and pay the Czar) as Bushies do! Fate is blind She brings to those who give the sweet fulfillment of their avarice. Like a gift out of the blue Bush steps in with contracts too! When you wish upon his star (…)

9/11: The lost ’plane crash’ into WTC7
3 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
6 commentsDear NIST and the planehuggers,
it appears to me that the investigation on WTC 7 an d 9/11 is still
questionable, because there is apparently new footage of a new
’plane’ crashing into WTC 7?
Since it wasn’t established yet, who was the camera operator for
W-ABC 7 (including a WESCAM set) of the official second hit,
maybe you can shed some new light on their identities or also
about this new clip?

Genetic optimism
3 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsDuring my bike ride this morning I expounded on an epiphany I had a few days ago, that people are fundamentally optimistic, that it’s programmed into their genes. Because of their inherent optimism, people refuse to see problems brewing around them until it’s too late to do anything about them.
If one thinks about it, genetic programming to be optimistic helps propagate one’s genes. After all, without optimism, why would a prehistoric man look for food when he has none, instead of simply (…) -

2 commentsAs you may know, President George W. Bush has three brothers and a sister. Together, the five Bush children have produced 10 combat-capable enlistment age adults who would be suitable for military service in this, a time of war declared by their father or uncle.
These children are the president’s daughters, Jenna and Barbara; Jeb’s sons George P. and John Ellis Bush Jr., and daughter, Noelle; Neil Bush’s daughter Lauren and son, Pierce: Marvin Bush’s son Marshall; and Dorothy Bush Koch’s (…) -
DO AMERICANS HAVE A "NATIONAL INTEREST?"
3 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
6 commentsby John Spritzler
Is it in our "national interest" for the United States to wage a "war on terror?" What immigration policy best serves our "national interest?" Framing questions this way seems neutral and uncontroversial. We’re all Americans, after all, and so we should at least agree that whatever serves our "national interest" is good and whatever harms it is bad.
But there is no such thing as our "national interest." Working class Americans have interests and values that conflict (…)
