The women of Basra have disappeared. Three years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, women’s secular freedoms - once the envy of women across the Middle East - have been snatched away because militant Islam is rising across the country.
Across Iraq, a bloody and relentless oppression of women has taken hold. Many women had their heads shaved for refusing to wear a scarf or have been stoned in the street for wearing make-up. Others have been kidnapped and murdered for crimes (…)

2 commentsThis week (the week of June 5) Congress will vote on an amendment to close the notorious School of the Americas/WHINSEC. The School of the Americas, funded by our tax dollars and located at Ft. Benning, Georgia, has trained - for more than 60 years - over 60,000 Latin American Soldiers in torture, psychological warfare and war against civilian populations.
Many of the tactics of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay began at the SOA to be used on civilians and those working for justice in Latin (…) -

Growing up in a military family, I was exposed to all that is military, including the history of America’s wars. One of the things I was led to believe was that American soldiers didn’t kill prisoners of war or civilians. The Japanese and Germans killed prisoners and civilians, but not Americans. The Communists killed prisoners and civilians, but not Americans.
Later, the Vietnam War disabused me of the misconception that Americans did not kill prisoners or civilians. But the (…) -

For the smug, comfortable, well-off Americans, it doesn’t seem to matter how long the war in Iraq goes on ? as long as the agony is endured by others. If the network coverage gets too grim, viewers can always switch to the E! channel (one hand on the remote, the other burrowing into a bag of chips) to follow the hilarious antics of Paris, Britney, Brangelina et al.
The war is depressing and denial is the antidote. Why should ordinary citizens (good people, religious (…) -

Politics aside, how would Constitution be affected by gay marriage ban?
Media Advisory
In a move that most political observers describe as a tactic to increase voter turnout among his party’s conservative base, George W. Bush announced on June 5 that he supported a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. While much of the media discussion of the issue focuses on the GOP’s political maneuvering, few reports examined what the actual effects of the proposed amendment would be.
