There is a video making the rounds on the Internet of a woman dragging her child on a leash through a Verizon store. There was scads of outrage and the mother was charged with a felony. Well, Dr. Obvious says that child abuse emanates from poor parenting skills.
When my wife was pregnant with our first child, another couple dropped by to congratulate us. As we chatted the husband said, “Enjoy those house plants while you can!”
“Why is that?" I asked.
“Oh, the baby (…)

Lost in the debate over health care and in between Sarah Palin’s speeches and right about the time the thriller stopped thrilling was Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announcing a “Temporary” expansion of the Army by 22,000 men. This temporary expansion is designed to take the strain off the Army. The Army has been growing all along and had reached 547,000 before this latest announcement. Some don’t think that 22,000 are enough; Senator Joe Lieberman issued a position (…) -

JAZZMAN CHRONICLES. DISSEMINATE FREELY.
It was the Great Depression that made the New Deal possible. Without it we would be a different nation. We may never have passed Social Security or Medicare. We may never have built the highways and bridges that are a legacy of public works. We might never have ensured the right to organized labor or passed legislation to protect workers and secure unemployment benefits. We may never have established regulatory limits on the size and conduct of (…) -

From tech stocks to high gas prices, Goldman Sachs has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression - and they’re about to do it again
The first thing you need to know about Goldman Sachs is that it’s everywhere. The world’s most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money. In fact, (…) -

There are several reasons that I believe we won’t get adequate healthcare reform. The first reason is that we don’t really deserve it. We let the political class ride unicycles and juggle bowling pins, anything to amuse the cows. Then we let the media and special interest lobbying groups tell us what’s good for us and what’s bad for us. We rail against what we don’t like and mumble about what we do want, and since the bulk of us are healthy it is just a quiet murmur (…) -

Editor’s note: Col. Timothy R. Reese is a senior U.S. military adviser to the Iraqis in Baghdad, at the flash point of the transition of power. Reese penned the memo below, which challenges the timetable championed by President Obama and Gen. Ray Odierno, the senior American commander in Iraq. Leaked text by way of the New York Times.

On Thursday, July 30, 2009, advocates for a Single Payer Healthcare system (Medicare Expanded for All) stormed Capitol HIll, in Washington, D.C. This date marks the 44th birthday of the Medicare program. Taxis circled Capitol Hill with “Single Payer” signs hanging from their windows; cup cakes and birthday cards were delivered by activists to each Congressional office; and rousing speech making took place at the Upper Senate Park, just south of the U.S. Capitol.

I write about homelessness and I get answers like, “So, are you for or against Obama’s stimulus?” Recently I read an article that was highly rated entitled “Now is the Time to Give Up on the President.” The author, using snark and sarcasm, set up straw men and then proceeded to knock them all down, arguing that it is much too soon to criticize this president. The underlying theme was, however, that to criticize the President was to be disloyal and in doing so was (…) -

Laboratory Says Security Is Tighter, but Earlier Count Missed Dangerous Vials
By Nelson Hernandez
An inventory of potentially deadly pathogens at Fort Detrick’s infectious disease laboratory found more than 9,000 vials that had not been accounted for, Army officials said yesterday, raising concerns that officials wouldn’t know whether dangerous toxins were missing.

Not Discouraged, Abandoned

Last month the number of Americans who lost their jobs was revised down to 467,000, just under a half a million. The total number of newly unemployed now stands at 14.7 million people. That number was revised downward 358,000 by a government technique used to classify those unemployed for more than twelve months as discouraged workers.
I am one of those workers, but I do not consider myself a discouraged worker as much as an abandoned worker. I have four resumes, (…)
