Why Do Palestinians Have to Pay for the Holocaust?

It has become an annual event at CU — Hillel Jewish student organization and the Program in Jewish Studies stage a week of commemoration activities for the Jewish Holocaust (the German/Nazi extermination of Jews) that happened 70 years ago. The ethos of Holocaust Awareness Week justifies the creation of the state of Israel as the refuge for all Jews and at the same time the horrific crimes against the Palestinians.
Yet in the festivities to commemorate the Holocaust it’s never mentioned that the Zionist project to seize the land of Palestine created a catastrophe (Nakba) for the locals, the Palestinians who were living there. This fact is simply ignored or if it is acknowledged at all, it is incorporated to the myth that 750,000 indigenous people of Palestine just (conveniently) decided to leave. Yes they volunteered their homes, their lands, their farms, their villages. Yes, they were thinking just the other day what a good idea it would be to give up everything they own to go live in squalid refugee camps.
In the Palestinian Nakba over 400 villages were razed, the Haganah and the Stern Gang exterminated 1000s of Palestinian people. Some sources account the Palestinian genocide since 1936 for more than one million killed. Ethnic cleansing was and is an explicit strategy of the Jewish state of Israel.
Today, there are over 7 million Palestinian refugees and Israel continues to ethnically cleanse the indigenous population in Palestine, dispossessing thousands of Palestinians each year, not to mention Israel’s relentless on-going war on the Occupied Territories. And Israel still refuses to let refugees return to their homes.
Holocaust Awareness is fine, but Jews and all Americans need to ask why the indigenous People of Palestine have to pay for the Jewish Holocaust. That’s why we stand in silent vigil at Holocaust Awareness Week at the University of Colorado.
