Libérez les objecteurs de conscience

Alex Cohn, Wissam Qablan, Orwa Zidan, Shaul Mograbi-Berger et Uri
Natan sont actuellement détenus dans une prison militaire pour avoir
refusé, en raison de leur objection de conscience, de servir dans
l’armée israélienne d’occupation.

Alex Cohn (19 ans), purge actuellement sa huitième peine de
prison, portant à 140 jours sa détention militaire. Alex est l’un des
initiateurs en 2005, de la lettre des Sministim (élèves de terminale),
signée par quelques 350 jeunes. Dans cette lettre, ils annoncent leur
refus de s’enrôler dans l’armée israélienne tant que celle-ci sera une
armée d’occupation. Dans sa lettre au ministre de la défense, Alex
écrit entre autre qu’ « il est impossible de servir dans une armée
d’occupation sans prendre part aux injustices causées. L’occupation
est le fruit d’une volonté et non le résultat d’une politique imposée
par les circonstances. L’ampleur et la violence de ses implications
sur les Palestiniens et les Israéliens ne sont pas saisissables. En
conséquence, elle ne repose sur aucun critère moral. Et, puisqu’on ne
peut actuellement servir dans l’armée sans prendre part à
l’occupation, je ne pourrais pas, en toute conscience, accepter de
m’enrôler. »

Wissan Qablan (20 ans), a purgé, à ce jour, 100 jours de
détention. Déjà, fin 2003, il avait refusé de s’enrôler, ne se
présentant pas le jour de son appel au Centre National de Recrutement.
Cette année, il a décidé de se livrer aux autorités militaires et a
été emprisonné plusieurs fois en raison de son refus. Wissan exprime
son refus de s’engager dans une armée que le gouvernement utilise pour
mener une politique destructrice pour les deux peuples et déclare
qu’il ne prendra pas part à une telle entreprise.

Orwa Zidan (19 ans), purge actuellement sa troisième peine
d’emprisonnement consécutive pour une période de 21 jours. Avant lui,
son frère avait été emprisonné en raison de son objection de
conscience, puis libéré cinq mois plus tard. Son père lui même, était
objecteur de conscience en 1974, sa mère est militante dans le « 
mouvement pour le refus druze ».

Shaul Mograbi Berger (19 ans), tout comme Orwa en est sa troisième
période consécutive d’emprisonnement pour 21 jours. Shaul milite au
sein du mouvement non violent contre le mur de séparation et a signé
la lettre des Sministim. Dans sa lettre au ministre de la défense, en
janvier 2005, Shaul écrivait entre autre : « tant que l’armée est une
force d’occupation, il n’y a pas de place pour moi en son sein.... ne
pas résister à l’occupation c’est l’approuver... Mon refus n’est pas
formel mais correspond à une loi essentielle -ce que j’ai appris à
l’école lors des cours d’instruction civique.... C’est la base et
l’essence de la démocratie.(...) ».

Uri Natan (18), aussi un des initiateurs en 2005, de la lettre des
Sministim (élèves de terminale), a refusé de servir, en raison de son
objection de conscience, por la premiére fois en Septembre 2005.

Refusons l’occupation

Derrière le rideau de fumée du Plan de désengagement, il apparaît
clairement qu’ Israël poursuit sa politique brutale d’occupation. Le
gouvernement continue de construire le mur de séparation, d’étendre
les colonies, d’opprimer le peuple palestinien dans les territoires
occupés.

Wissam Qablan, Alex Cohn, Orwa Zidan et Shaul Mogarbi Berger, sont
emprisonnés pour avoir refusé, pour des raisons de conscience, de
s’enrôler dans l’armée et de prendre part ainsi à l’occupation et
l’oppression. Leur emprisonnement successif n’a pour but que de les
punir et de les empêcher de suivre ce que leur dicte leur conscience.

Nous en appelons au Ministre de la Défense ainsi qu’au Chef d’Etat

SIGN A PETITION IN SUPPORT OF THE OCCUPATION REFUSERS AND TO
DEMAND THEIR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alex Cohn, Wissam Qablan, Orwa Zidan and Shaul Mograbi-Berger are
currently in military prison for their refusal, on grounds of
conscientious objection, to serve the Israeli occupation of
Palestinian territories.

Alex Cohn (19) is currently serving a eighth term in prison, and
has spent a total of 140 days in military jail. Alex is one of the
initiators of the 2005 Shministim (high school seniors) letter, which
was signed by about 350 young people. In this letter they state that
they do not intend to serve in the Israeli army so long as it serves
the Occupation. In his letter to the Minister of Defense, Alex writes
among other things : "It is impossible to serve in the occupation army
without taking part in the injustices it causes. The occupation is the
result of a policy and not imposed by circumstances. The extent and
power of its ramifications for the Israelis and Palestinians cannot be
grasped. It is therefore unacceptable by any moral standard. Because
one cannot serve in the army without taking part in the occupation, I
cannot, in good conscience, enlist."

Wissam Qablan (20) has spent 100 days in prison. He first refused
to enlist already in late 2003 and did not appear at the National
Induction Base on the appointed day. This year he decided to present
himself and he was subsequently jailed several times over on the
grounds of his refusal. Wissam says that he refuses to serve in the
army because he regards it as a tool used by the government to conduct
a policy that destroys both peoples. He will not become part of such
an organization.

Orwa Zidan(19) is now spending his third 21-day term in military
jail. His brother, before him, was imprisoned too after he refused to
serve on conscientious grounds. He was released after five months.
Orwa’s father, as well, was a CO in 1974, and his mother is active in
the Druze refusal movement.

Shaul Mograbi-Berger(19), like Orwa, is currently in jail for a
third term. Shaul is an activist in the non-violent movement against
the separation wall and with the Shministim. In his letter, dated
January 2005, to the minister of defense, he wrote, among other
things : "For as long as this army is an occupying power, it won’t have
room for me. (...) Non-resistance to the occupation, and even more so to
military service, is tantamount to approving of the occupation. (...) In
making my refusal, I do not follow positive law, according to which it
is my duty to enlist for military service, but I am faithful to
substantive law. The latter, as I learned during civics classes, is,
as its name suggests : the foundation and essence of democracy."

Uri Natan (18) first announced his refusal to enlist on Sep. 28,
2005. In his letter to the Minister of Defense he wrote : "I have lived
in Israel all of my life, for 18 years. Throughout these years I have
been witnessing endless suffering around me, I have been seeing
revenge leading to revenge and more revenge. Nothing has helped me
understand the explanations and excuses that I have heard as to why
the violence perpetrated by the Israeli side is to be preferred over
that coming from the Palestinian side. The use of violence, killings,
and intended harm and humiliation cannot be justified, I believe, and
I cannot understand why it is presented as necessary".

The Forum of Parents of Conscientious Objectors (the Parents
Forum) is asking you to sign the petition below in support of the
occupation refusers and demanding their immediate release from
military prison. (This petition will be published in the press.)

Refuse the Occupation

Now, that the smoke-screen of the disengagement plan has
dispersed, it has become clear once again that Israel’s brutal
occupation of the Palestinian territories has by no means ended and is
in fact gaining force. The Israeli government continues building the
separation wall, expanding its illegal settlements and oppressing the
Palestinian people in the occupied territories.

Wissam Qablan, Alex Cohn, Orwa Zidan, Shaul Mograbi-Berger and Uri
Natan are in military prison for their conscientious refusal to enlist
and take part in the occupation and its ensuing oppression. Their
imprisonment is meant only to punish them and prevent them from
obeying the dictate of their conscience.

We call upon the Minister of Defense and the Chief of Staff : Allow
the jailed objectors to follow their conscience -
