Officials promise that the state-of-the-art security fence constructed around Gaza will bring unprecedented security. The double security fence, surveillance cameras, robotic jeeps and remote-controlled machine guns are expected to provide a formidable barrier to terrorists, as are the low-tech pits and trenches. Officials explain that these measures will permit the IDF to maintain a low profile in the area without compromising Israel’s security interests.
At a cost of over NIS 1 billion, Israel has been preparing for the withdrawal of IDF soldiers from Gaza during the past year and a half, taking steps to prevent terrorist infiltrations into southern pre-1967 Green Line Israel.
Nevertheless, there are fears of Kassam rocket attacks, and sniper fire from high-rise buildings the PA is planning to build.
