An openly gay candidate of Partito della Rifondazione Comunista wins in southern Italy, in regional elections that resulted in 11 victories for the center-left coalition, which now controls 16 of Italy’s 20 regions.

Nichi Vendola’s victory decisively refutes the American dogma that militants on the left, choosing radicals, can’t attract votes at the center and lose to the right — the dogma that the Democrats in America and the center-left in Italy promulgate, even though it has been often contradicted, as in the moderate John Kerry’s loss — as Vendola won 100,000 more votes than the center-left coalition.

      And, when the Xenophobic, stupid, hostile little tribes that make up Europe decide to throw WWIII, we should stay out of it and let them reduce themselves to the stone age cave dwellers they would have been had we not intervened inWWII, and had not the American Taxpayer financed the reconstruction of Europe through the Marshall Plan. With the exception of ABBA, Brigitte Bardot and the Morris Minor, the only contributions to world history Europe has made in the last 90 years has been WWI and WWII. Didn’t Mussolini start his career as head of the Italian Communist Party? In that they are constantly making the same mistakes and expecting a different outcome, the European body politic has been a case study in archtypical insanity.

  • First comment on this thread: What’s interesting about this story is that the original poster doesn’t mind that the winning candidate is gay. I say this as a conservative (paleo-con) who recently discovered this site and was surprised by the anti-homosexual tone of bellaciao. I always thought lefties weren’t freaked out about homosexuality, to their credit. But when I posted comments to the effect that Bush has done an okay job, the venom and hatred spewed in my direction included lots of disgusting insults about me being gay—I’m not, but who cares? (I’ll spare you the silly little boys’ room language my critics used.)

The Americans did little but arrive late to claim their piece of cake. The USSR had reached Berlin by the time America was even close to Germany. Then theres the re generation of europe, well as you undoubtedly know your economy is currently in questionable shape, and in this global economy of ours you must realise despite your oppresion of all the poor countries you also need a strong economy such as that of Europe which supports you! Finally on the issue of the American democracy, carefully look deeply into the policy of your ’democrats’ and ’republicans’, and carefully note the exact same driving policies and actions; if democracy is mass representation you must have very limited minds in America :)

    • We have two major parties. This means that both must compete for the center, since that’s where the votes are. What you call lack of diverse opinions, I call compromise and accomodation.

      The parliamentary system is excellent in some ways. For example, it’s good that the UK’s PM has to drop by the Abbey every week to get grilled by his colleagues. The downside to the parliamentary system is that fringe groups—commies, greens, nazis, etc.—have real power.
