I have reviewed some of the material in George Tenet’s self-serving book At the Center of the Storm. Tenet was CIA director from 1997 till his resignation in 2004. He is widely known as the protégé of former U.S. Senator David Boren, who resigned from his seat in 1994, after manipulating the regents of the University of Oklahoma into naming him president. According to Time magazine, Boren and Tenet were having a “leisurely (…)

Democracy, Not Agents Provocateurs (video)
28 August 2007 par (Open-Publishing)
By Caspar Davis British Columbia Editorialist
I am disgusted, but not surprised, that police agent provocateurs attempted to discredit the peaceful demonstrations at the North American summit in Montebello, Quebec.
I was at the Seattle WTO meeting in 1999 as an accredited observer, and I followed the events there closely. Although that event is always referred to in the media as "the battle of Seattle" and the epitome of violence, the only violence on the part of the hundreds of (…) -
Two Legs Good, Four Legs Equal

“The moral duty of man consists of imitating the moral goodness and benificence of God manifested in the creation towards all his creatures. Everything of persecution and revenge between man and man, and everything of cruelty to animals is a violation of moral duty.” Thomas Paine from The Age of Reason
Despite the trappings of a civilized culture and the incredibly persistent myth of our moral exceptionalism, we in the United States are collectively a group of (…) -
Kansas Activists Bring Down the Rafters

1 commentReport by Anne Pritchett and Carol Huhs
In case you haven’t heard, last night Kansas Representative Dennis Moore and Kansas Senator Pat Roberts met for a little "kaffeeklatch" at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) near Kansas City, Kansas. It was an attempt at bipartisanship - - a blue dog Dem talking with a Repub - - trying to make all the problems go away. They sat and talked about nothing for about an hour and a half. They took questions from the audience that were written on (…) -
Google/Blogger refuses to ban Racist Blog

12 commentsBy Rory Winter
From its title, Le Blog du Cochon Hallal, is clearly meant as a calculated insult against Muslims. If it had been called Kosher Pigs there would have been a tremendous outcry from the international Jewish community and Blogger would have been forced to close it down without further ado.
But Google/Blogger’s attitude appears to be totally cynical and tailored simply to market forces. knowing that the Muslim community is incapable of organizing the kind of opposition that (…) -

The British Army has been defeated in Iraq and left with no option but to retreat from the country, claims radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Violent resistance and a rising death toll among UK troops has forced a withdrawal, he said in an interview with The Independent.
"The British have given-up and they know they will be leaving Iraq soon," Mr Sadr said. "They are retreating because of the resistance they have faced. (…) -
Darfur: pornography for the chattering classes
19 August 2007 par (Open-Publishing)
By Brendan O’ Neill
Normally, when one of Britain’s stuffy media watchdogs decrees that some public figure or broadcaster has said something less than honest, it causes a commotion. When the Advertising Standards Authority said earlier this year that Gillian McKeith, TV’s self-styled healthy eating guru, should stop using the title ‘Dr’, the media had a feeding frenzy.
The Office of Communications’ harsh judgement against Channel 4 over the bullying of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty on (…) -
The Camp for Climate Action 2007
19 August 2007 par (Open-Publishing)
By climatecamp.org.uk
We hope that the camp will be many things to many people, from exploring what the problems are, and the changes and challenges we face, to gain the skills we will need as we prepare for a future that burns less energy. We’ll also be joining forces with Heathrow residents fighting the third runway, linking a critical local battle to the need for systemic change. And finally we’ll be taking direct action to turn things round, and create lasting communities of (…) -

3 commentsHundreds of antiwar organizations are planning to bring people from all over the United States to Washington DC for a massive antiwar protest on Saturday, September 15, timed to coincide with the report by Gen. The September 15 demonstration was initiated by the ANSWER Coalition, which has organized most of the large-scale demonstrations in Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities since 2002.
