The French president’s clear statements on dark memorial issues have repeatedly confounded friends and foes alike. Jacques Chirac will be remembered as the president who recognized the responsibility of the collaborationist Vichy government during Nazi Occupation.
General de Gaulle maintained that France could not be held responsible for the policies of the Vichy regime during the Occupation; François Mitterrand likewise stubbornly opposed acknowledging France’s (…)

Maurice Papon’s Cynicism and Death
28 March 2007 par (Open-Publishing)
By Maurice Ulrich
Dead at the age of 96 years on Saturday [February 10, 2007], the former minister never admitted his role in the imprisonment of 1645 Jews in concentration camps, as he never showed any regret for anything he did.
There are some silences which speak volumes. Yesterday, a day after Maurice Papon’s death, the only two reported political reactions were those from Marie-George Buffet and François Hollande. The old man, who died at Pontault –Combault (Seine-et-Marne) at the (…) -

“….a funny, jowly, canny, barbarous guy who lives in a multimillion-dollar condo on Park Avenue in Manhattan and conveys himself about the planet in a corporate jet and a private yacht. THEY are victims of the United States’ growing mortgage crisis - low-paid workers whose homes have been repossessed amid rising interest rates, a stagnant property market and a lax lending regime.
But in Los Angeles, where having a car is as essential as owning a home, many are sleeping in their vehicles to ensure a roof over their head.
Campaigners for the homeless expect more to hole up in their cars as they lose homes due to the problems that have dogged (…) -

Washington, DC - At 12:30 PM, on March 17, 2007, near the Lincoln Memorial, at Constitution Ave. and 23rd St., NW, peace advocates, in the tens of thousands assembled for a “March on the Pentagon.” A blustery wind was blowing in from the Potomac River, which parallels the area. Meanwhile, the Democrats are in almost full retreat to the Bush-Cheney Gang, with respect to the issue of continued funding for the Iraqi War. And, thanks (…) -

For several days I had been bedeviled by the recurring memory of a jingle from an out-dated television commercial. My recollection of the product they were promoting lay tantalizingly close to the edge of my consciousness, but remained stubbornly out of my reach.
So my “mind’s ear” was left listening to, “It’s time for a new beginning…” ad nauseam with no tangible context. (If I had had that, I would at least have known which company to despise for etching such an inane (…) -

Blair has told the House of Commons that Britain’s fleet of four nuclear-armed submarines - due to be phased out from 2022 - (…)

14 commentsMayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan (…) -

5 March 2007 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentSwedish GUE/NGL MEP Jens Holm, a member of the parliament’s CIA investigation committee, is supportive of the Swedish government’s decision to revoke the deportation order for Mohammed Al-Zery. It was in December of 2001 that Mohammed Al-Zery and Ahmed Agiza were arrested by Swedish security police, with the help of the CIA, and deported to Egypt. They were tortured during both the deportation and their time in prison in Egypt. "This is a first step towards justice for Mohammed Al-Zery. (…)
