4 commentsby John Hooper in Rome
Italy’s prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, yesterday confirmed that he would start pulling his country’s troops out of Iraq within two months.
Speaking at the G8 Gleneagles summit, Mr Berlusconi said the withdrawal of the first of Italy’s 3,000 troops would start in September.
"We will begin withdrawing 300 men in September," he said, adding that the decision would depend on the security situation on the ground.
He said he had discussed the plan with allies and (…) -

4 commentsFears were growing overnight that today’s G8 summit in Scotland was set to be derailed by violence and political bickering.
Sir Bob Geldof, the organiser of the weekend’s Live8 concerts to fight poverty, was downbeat last night.
"We have the potential to make this an historic G8," Geldof said.
"But I don’t think they (G8 leaders) are anywhere near there."
More than 60 people were arrested in Edinburgh as violent protesters infiltrated mass demonstrations for G8.

We’ll bring our troops home, whether Bush likes it or not
4 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
15 commentsBush and Rumsfeld reject the idea of a timeline to withdraw from Iraq. Bush says we need to "stay the course." Rumsfeld says we’ll be there another 10 years. I wonder if these men would be willing to go through what our soldiers do: Occupying a country that is increasingly hostile to U.S. presence, where more and more we look like a foreign occupying power than a liberating army.
I am sickened every time I hear about another soldier killed in their Humvee, or scores of Iraqi kids blown up (…) -

4 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
7 commentsHUNDREDS of anti-capitalist demonstrators took to the streets of Scotland’s capital today in a series of protests ahead of the G8 summit.
The centre of Edinburgh was brought to a standstill as an estimated 500 anarchist protesters were involved in tense stand-offs with police.
The demonstrations, under the banner of The Carnival For Full Enjoyment, were said by organisers to be aimed at highlighting their anti-war and anti-wage slavery message.

’Last throes’ or latest quagmire?
4 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
8 commentsWhich is it? Do we need 12 more years in Iraq to defeat the violent insurgency, or is the insurgency in its "last throes"?
Is this war essential to stop terrorism from invading our shores, or was shaky intelligence "fixed" to justify a pre-planned invasion?
Our own independence celebration this weekend is an appropriate time to take stock of just where we stand on Iraq, given the duplicity of information and mixed-messages coming from the White House and from our British allies.

Bunny Greenhouse, the Army Corps of Engineers’ top contracting official-turned whistle-blower, said in testimony at a hearing by Democrats on Capitol Hill that "every aspect" of Halliburton’s oil contract in Iraq had been under the control (…)
