Edito Wars and conflicts International USA

by Doug Thompson

"What," a reader wanted to know, "turned you into such a Bush-hater?"

Nothing.

I’m not a Bush-hater. I don’t know the man well enough to hate him. Hate is a personal emotion. I don’t get personal.

I am, however, very angry over what Bush and his minions have done to the country I love.

I’m angry over his disregard for the more than 1,500 Americans he has sent to their death in his lies-based war.

I’m angry about the lies he told to try and justify that senseless war, a war that allowed al Qaeda to regroup in Afghanistan and that has — as a direct result of Bush’s reckless actions — put America in more danger than it faced on the day before September 11, 2001.

I’m angry at the Republican Party’s sellout of its soul to maintain power in Congress, allowing corruption to replace philosophy and ignoring the law to protect crooks like Tom DeLay.

I’m angry at the Bush administration’s all-out assault on the Constitution, a process started by former attorney general John Ashcroft, a Bible-thumping zealot who put his misguided religious fanaticism above the law. It will continue under new attorney general Alberto Gonzales, a Bush ass-kisser who says the Constitution is "an outdated document."

I’m angry at the Republican partisans who follow this madman blindly because they put allegiance to party above love of country. Republicans have padded their numbers with the ignorant, the racist and the bigoted because their basic policies appeal to such biases.

Putting a political party above country is not limited to Republicans. Democrats do the same thing. Neither party cares one goddamn bit about America. The only thing that matters to either party is advancing their own agenda and seizing power. Republicans, at the moment, can do the most damage because they control the White House and Congress but I don’t, for a second, think anything would improve under a Democratic regime. If the Democrats ever pull their head out of their collective asses and manage to win an election I’ll go after them with the same vengeance because both sides long ago sold out their country in the name of political power.

I’m angry that this country has become a bitter, partisan nation where patriotism is a political ploy, where dissent is attacked as anti-patriotic and the sacrifice of American soldiers becomes part of a party agenda.

Those who disagree call it hate. That’s their problem and their ignorance. Their own allegiance to a political philosophy only proves their lack of love for country. Partisans aren’t patriots. They’re traitors. And they’re the ones who hate.

I don’t have time to hate. I’m too busy trying to see if there is any way to save this country I love.

I don’t have time to play by Robert’s Rules of Order or use nice language that makes people feel good while missing the point.

If that makes a partisan squirm then that’s just too fucking bad. It’s about time somebody made them nervous.

  • Absolutely PERFECT response ....I’m increasingly losing any hope that this country can be restored to what it once was. I never in my life dreamed I would be ashamed to be an American citizen, and amazed that the population of this country is so blind and callous to what has happened. ALL THE WHILE TALKING ABOUT "MORALS". I could vomit. We have become our own worst enemy, without even the sense to recognize it. The good news is if we keep this up, we (as a nation) will get what we deserve. Which is a never-to-be-restored reputation of violence and war-mongering, economic implosion, and NO citizens who are educated and visionary enough to get us out of it.
I hope there are more out there like you---we have to keep trying.

    • The reason there is no one visionary enough to change things is because we are being raised on a diet of TV and MacDonalds, which destroys brain cells with impunity and tends to make one complacent. Accordingly, when there is someone who is visionary and angry, they get little attention because the crowd is so numb to the truth that nothing will ever get done.

    • You’re absolutely right - neither party gives a damn about the country. They’re all crooks and liars only interested in feathering their nests. How many of our politicians have off-shore bank accounts bursting at the seams? And the American people are brain dead - when someone smiles at you look into their eyes. Chances are they’re sizing you up just to see what they can get outta you!

    • Be assured it happened to the Germans, too.

  • Every person has to speak to every person they know and encourage them to shut off the news and go online for news to reliable news sites. We need to mobilize, there is no time to sit back, our Country will be gone. They have caused so much destruction in 4 years... I can’t even think about the next 4.
We have to WAKE UP the sleeping population of America who is being fed propaganda 24/7, denied healthcare, encouraged to be selfish, selfcentered, eat all they want, drive those huge S.U.V.’s., take all those cholesterol lowering meds and antidepressants(make the Pharmaceutical Corps. wealthy).
It is a Country run by the Corporations, not the people!

  • I too am saddened at all that is unfolding at an ever increasing pace. I feel I have lost the country I was taught that I had. I believed in the ideals of freedom and demoracy. But what I believed in was my own translation of those teachings, not the reality of politics in the fifties and sixties. They began killing any leader that rallied a following, and still do. Now they own the press and rig our elections. The time has come for us to reclaim our lives and the lives of our children, not to mention the destruction metted out on the world at large. We have amazing tools to generate power enough for each and everyone to stop using oil and get off power grids. There is, as many have so eloquently put it, no fuel or power shortage just an integrity shortage.
But as seemingly miraclous as some of these gadgets are what, if anything, will they really change. The simple truth is if we don’t change the pardigm we are currently operating under, nothing will ever be any different than it currently is. The fact is there is enough for everyone right now. The ideas of scarcity and fear that pervade and rule our culture are plain and simple lies. If we change our paradigm there is plenty for all. This must begin on a personal level. Be the change you want to see. This is not easy but our times demand that we rise to the occasion.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness, in a decending spiral of destruction. The chain reaction of evil must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation." M.L.K..
Those of us who have unplugged from the TV and have an ability to look within ourselves must gather together and explore and create within and amoungst ourselves, and our communities, a new paridigm of living together. These communities must grow into a movement spreading across our nation. We do not need to vote to do this, just begin. For until we live with the understandings that the new quantum physics and the old mystics teach, no declaration or amazing gadget will ever change a thing. These dialoges are currently occuring where I live and I look forward to replies and feedback from others. email shantparv@rockisland.com

    • YOU could see it coming from last week

Ollie North and associates were held up as national heros for running their own foreign policy.
how did they get away with that?
