Viktor Yushchenko, Ukrai-ne’s president, appeared dejected when he appeared in front of journalists yesterday to announce that, in effect, the Orange Revolution had ground to a halt.
The fervour that swept him and firebrand leader Yulia Tymoshenko to power last winter had dissipated, ground down by months of bickering among political camps that led to this week’s bitter accusations of corruption among top-ranking officials.
But much of the blame for the collapse of his (…)

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) — Less than a year after coming to power in the ’Orange Revolution’ and making Ukraine the envy of people in less democratic former Soviet regimes President Viktor Yushchenko has sacked key political supporters amid accusations of graft and corruption. Thursday he fired Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko who had been his champion in the non-violent winter revolution. Earlier, he had accepted the resignation of Petro Poroshenko, another (…) -
Correction: Venezuela’s Chavez Fuels A Class War

19 commentsI attempted to post this as a response to “Venezuela’s Chavez Avoids Class War”, but my response did not post. I hope that this posting is published.
Dear Professor Pareja:
While your commentary, “Venezuela’s Chavez Avoids Class War”, attempts to portray the virtues of Venezuela’s current government, it oversimplifies the nice-looking trees at the danger of ignoring the forest. I will first respond to your specific examples, and then I will attempt to frame the big picture (…) -

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) — A conservative German minister in a southern state has caused uproar by saying U.S. President George W. Bush should be "shot down" for his handling of the crisis in hurricane-struck New Orleans.
Andreas Renner, Social Minister in Germany’s southern state of Baden-Wuertemberg, clarified later that he had only meant Bush should be downed politically.
During a visit to a local company on Tuesday, Renner said of Bush: "He ought to be (…) -

19 commentsVice President Dick Cheney, in Gulfport, Mississippi on a tour of the Katrina hurricane zone, was told to "go fuck yourself" twice on live television.
During a discussion on hurricane relief efforts, an off camera protester shouts, "Go fuck yourself, Mr. Cheney. Go fuck yourself."
The camera remains on Cheney while we hear scuffling in the background. Cheney continues speaking.

Cheney replies, "First time (…) -

In a way, it’s amusing.
Watching the Bush cabinet, sycophants and True Believers scurry madly to explain that Bush is not to blame for ANYTHING. It seems that the main object of the post-Katrina government effort is not to succor the victims, drain the water, or rebuild the city but to refurbish the image of immortal leader George W. Bush which has been tarnished by the fecal waters of the Gulf.
All efforts are made to (…) -
Only in America

Even in America?! Bleat the politicians and the US media. Only in America! Responds Daniel Patrick Welch, with an eye on how the response to Hurricane Katrina lays bare the uncivil infrastructure beneath the US’ carefully maintained façade. Issues of class and race are nowhere more starkly on view than they are in the wake of this largely man-made disaster. The near total incompetence and callousness of the Bush administration has thankfully floated to the top of New Orleans’ (…) -

William Rehnquist croaked Saturday night, 9-3-5.
Sing hymns of joy!
Above, Rehnquist is seen administering the oath of office
to his chosen candidate for President, George W. Bush.
A robed bench rat and traitor is gone. The man with the nut-house face presided over the U.S. Supreme Court far too long. His legacy is in accordance with his insanity: Bush II, 9-11, Afghanistan, Iraq, stolen elections, wiping out the (…) -

JERUSALEM, July 11— Israel’s government will request $2.2 billion from the Bush administration to help pay for its planned evacuation of the Gaza Strip and four Jewish settlements in the northern West Bank later this summer, Israeli officials said Monday.
The amount, which would be paid over three years, is equal to roughly one year’s worth of U.S. military assistance to Israel. It represents one of the largest one-time aid requests Israel has made to the (…)
