PUTTING THE BLAME ON MAME

By Peter Fredson

September 8, 2005

In a way, it’s amusing.

Watching the Bush cabinet, sycophants and True Believers scurry madly to explain that Bush is not to blame for ANYTHING. It seems that the main object of the post-Katrina government effort is not to succor the victims, drain the water, or rebuild the city but to refurbish the image of immortal leader George W. Bush which has been tarnished by the fecal waters of the Gulf.

All efforts are made to show that Bush is honest, sincere, compassionate, uniting, fearless, energetic, and any other positive attributes that Karl Rove and associates decide will be positive statements about their leader. Katrina is definitely secondary in the attention of the Bush administration.

Bush is the main focus, the “poster boy” of the True Believers, corporate executives and neo-conservatives. He must not be touched by dirty waters, by hints of racism, by criticism of incompetence, inattention, or heedlessness.

His thugs in suits probably give Bush hundreds of suggestions daily to demonstrate that he is The Man of The Hour. Photo-Ops are one way to show his ability.

“Why don’t you pick up a little black boy and hug him?” “Why don’t you get your picture standing in front of a crane?” “Why don’t you hand someone a sandwich?” “Why don’t you kiss a cute little white girl?” “Why don’t you put your arm around someone just rescued?” “Be sure to look sincere at all times.”

“Tell the crowd that just like in Iraq you’re going to stay the course until New Orleans is rebuilt again.” “Have your picture taken looking out of Airforce One, maybe wiping away an imaginary tear.” “Why don’t you have your Mom, Barbara, hug someone?” “Why don’t you make a joke about Trent Lott’s house getting all wet?” “Make sure Dick Cheney doesn’t say F--- You to anyone.”

“Whatever you do, don’t blame God for this, but always thank him for saving whoever got saved.” “You can always mention 9/11.” “Let’s get some big flags behind you.” “Be sure you are holding a bible.” “Whatever you do, don’t let Jerry Falwell in the picture.”

I’m sure that bloggers can furnish hundreds more helpful suggestions for George Bush.

We know that local, county, state and federal officials were negligent in not rebuilding levees for years. We know that people are used to riding out storms on the Gulf Coast, and didn’t think this was a big deal.

We know that Bush is making a record of staying away from the “hard” job of being President by pretending to be a gentleman rancher. We know that Bush was trying to avoid Cindy or any explanation of any “noble” purpose for being in Iraq. We know that Bush was strumming a guitar, eating cake with McClain, making speeches about “staying the course” and about his “flypaper” strategery in Iraq.

We know that Bush avoids taking responsibility for anything, has unlimited denials at his disposal, and has tried and trusted boot-licking sycophants to divert any criticism by Rovian counter measures.

We know that Bush confuses reality with fantasy. We know of his egomania, dry-drunk syndrome, and manic ways of showing charm and personality to offset his petulant, irresponsible, irritable, bullying ways.

We also know that thousands of people died because of incompetence, lack of foresight, and sometimes for common stupidity. We know his hacks are in control of news media and will spare no rhetoric to show that Bush is blameless for anything that happens.

But all that is explained away by the Bush people. Right now they are launching public relations gimmicks to show how noble, charitable and efficient they are, and how criticism of them is treason or will hamper efforts to rescue people.. Now they want to talk about “Uniting, not Dividing” only 5 years too late. They still don’t like to discuss race, poverty, homelessness, but if they could blame everything on God without seeming to be irreligious, they would certainly do so.

George Bush has determined not to let reality intrude on his fantasy of world domination, so he and his thugs engage in spinning the truth like Whirling Dervishes.

He and his public relations agents have decided to wage an intensive personality campaign, manic in intensity, in which Bush struts, swaggers, grins, smiles broadly, gives bear-hugs, puts his arms around dazed storm victims, stares intensely to show sincerity, and does his level best to show charm and positiveness by showing lots of teeth. He scurries about madly hugging everyone in sight of a camera.

He is determined to eradicate all negative aspects connected with his failing presidency, and concentrate on the few positive aspects. He figures correctly that being likeable, like Ted Bundy, will make some people forget or forgive his failures as President.

We know that he has a wide following, called the True Believers, that are predisposed to forget and forgive in advance of any of his actions, like they did with Jimmy Swaggart. He would have to kick a puppy to death before they would abandon their rapturous dreams in him as their savior. They will defend him might and main, and have dozens of blogs explaining why Bush is blameless, like the White Knight of the Crusades.

We know that Bush has decided to investigate himself. This may be satire, but seems in line with what Bush has already done to investigate why he is in Iraq. We already know what the result will be, so he should save the public the expense of a fake investigation.

We know that Bush followers will ask the public not to play “The Blame Game.” Of course, they know who is to blame, but don’t want people talking about it. They do not repeat Harry Truman’s THE BUCK STOPS HERE, because they say, “What Buck? We never saw any Buck. There’s no Buck.” And, when you have millions of bucks in the bank, just one is too much to ask you to account for.

So, it’s all a matter of Public Relations. Whoever can come up with the best slogan, or symbol, will win the game. The Gulf Coast is incidental.

Still, we feel obliged to say: Bush you are a disgrace as President. You are now the worst President this country has ever had. You have lost all credibility, all respect. All your swaggering, smiling and smirking conceals a vicious power-mad person who wants to rule the world and will not hesitate a moment to demolish anyone in your way.

  • Peter, what’s even more amusing is to see the democrats and liberals run for cover as more and more information comes out regarding the incompetence of the local and state democrats regarding their inadequate preparation for Katrina before and after. It is laughable to see the crocodile tears of the lefties blaming Bush and FEMA while the Salvation Army and other faith-based organizations come together quickly to the aid of the Katrina survivors in all four states. The average american sees this and knows that the lefty agenda is all hot air and hollow promises. The democrats will continue to lose and lose big.

    • So six days is quickly, huh? May you get "quickly" in your next disaster.

    • It goes to show how clueless you are. The Red Cross and Salvation Army had shelters not only in NO but throughout the affected Gulf coasts. Oh but you forgot that Katrina also affected places outside of NO. DUH!

    • To all rednecks: Bush is done. The estimate of the damage for Katharina only equals 600 Billion - according to scientific resources - and the projected 200 Billion USD.
Do any propaganda or blame it on the local authorities, it will break the majority of the G(ang).O(f).P(plutocrats). in 2006, unless we see this shameful beating up of black voters again as we saw it in 2004.
Also the local authorities in N.O. and in the State of Louisiana have papers, letters and recordings which can serve as evidence against the Bush administration - to bad, eh.

Leaving helpless humans on a bridge for more then 2 days this pictures plus phony comments of G.O.P. criminals made it around the world. America has become a third world country!

    • Newsflash! Bush already has his second term. You guys are still trying to get him. Why? You guys should worry about who the democrats should have as a viable candidate in the next election. But from the looks of the democratic run city of New Orleans and the democratic run state of Louisiana, the very people who have made that state the 2nd most poorest in the nation, even with the Mississippi shipping and oil rigs, you and the dems will lose again. Keep crying.

    • Newsflash: Bush is still in charge...and we intend to hold him responsible for his piss poor job, get it you Bu$h Butt Kisser???

    • Hey asswipe, you’re going to find that Blanco and Nagin were the ones that were irresponsible. Try to get that through your small head.

    • You wish...how is Bush’s anus smelling today???

    • You wish....how is Bu$h’s anus smelling today???

  • America has great people, a history for taking on adversity and being victorious but this is not reflected in Bush.

I Don’t care if Bush defines or re-defines Noble Cause. I don’t know if the troops should come home now or be strategicaly redeployed along the borders away from populations. I just know America is filled with good people whether I agree with them or not. I just know that America can do better than Bush and he should resign.

  • The President’s incompetence is becoming more and more obvious. To read my essays and others’ on his dry drunk syndrome and father complex go to google and type in "dry drunk."

  • The one who really wants to rule the world is Karl Rove. He wants to do this through Bush as he has climbed the political ladder through Bush. In climbing this political ladder, he has left a whole lot of bodies and careers in tatters along the way and has NEVER had to account for a single one of them to date!!! At this, I have to shake my head in wonder!! How the heck does he do it? Is everybody so afraid of this sociopathic idiot they will not take him on?

I can’t say the Democratic party can put forth a good candidate. I can’t say the Republican party can put forth a good candidate. Politics in the United States has become so lost within itself it no longer represents the "common" man. All of these people out here screaming "lefties" are probably people who smile all the way to the bank with Bush’s tax cut for the jaquar set. I know a few of them. I am not one of them. But I know when something smells like a sewer and Rove politics as practiced by Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld sure does stink. Cheney and Rumsfeld tried to get President Clinton to invade Iraq in 1995 with the same plan they convinced Bush to use. Hmmm......................

In Bush’s first speech when he landed in the Gulf Coast and was discussing the rebuilding, his last words referenced how "we will rebuild Trent Lott’s home to be better than ever". Excuse me............. After all, FEMA does give $250,000 in flood insurance if your home goes bye bye. Seems like now Trent Lott has senior status in Congress so he has let it be known he will be getting first dibs at the "hurricane money" since the ones from Louisiana are all junior to him. Hmmmm....................

I can say there is a LOT of blame to go around. I can say there were a LOT of people (regardless of their political affiliation) who acted like they were ADHD afflicted. And we can all agree a LOT of people suffered. The reason we are so focused on the Federal response of this entire fiasco is because that is the part of this which affects ALL of us not just the people in the Gulf Coast area. If we need these imbeciles for a national crises, is this how they will respond? This is why they need to be held accountable for THEIR actions. Bush gutted FEMA, placed it under DHS, and gave command to some fair, haired attorney just for the fun of it. I am not worried how each individual soldier will respond. I’m concerned how their commanders and especially Commander In Chief will respond. Guess it depends on what Karl Rove is telling him that day.

    • Even if hard to prove but all this could be intentional to divert the public atention from:

The national and international growing support for Cindy Sheehan, the failing of Iraq war,
the Downing Street Memos, Karl Rove beeing the source of leak , the military options on the table for Iran.

All of them on the Media night and day.

Don’t forget any of this and lets keep the presure on

  • This is yet another failure of George W. Bush. He has, in his presidency, ultimately failed in his role as protector of the American citizenry. I has neither the intelligence or humanity to fulfill his role as President of the United States. He needs to be impeached before he can do more harm. We need new leadership.
