WASHINGTON - With no fanfare, the U.S. House has passed a controversial doomsday provision that would allow a handful of lawmakers to run Congress if a terrorist attack or major disaster killed or incapacitated large numbers of congressmen.
"I think (the new rule) is terrible in a whole host of ways - first, I think it’s unconstitutional,’’ said Norm Ornstein, a counselor to the independent Continuity of Government Commission, a bipartisan panel created to study the issue. ``It’s a very (…)

No Honor, No Humanity

1 comment"George Bush has purged the last of his father’s senior advisers, handing over control to his neocon allies"
In the article A state of chaos published Dec. 30,2004 in The Guardian, Blumental writes: To begin with, Bush has unceremoniously and without public acknowledgement dumped Brent Scowcroft, his father’s closest associate and friend, as chairman of the foreign intelligence advisory board. The elder Bush’s national security adviser was the last remnant of traditional Republican realism (…) -
PHOTOS Show George W. Bush Seriously Ill Physically
27 December 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
38 commentsGeorge W. Bush apparently is wearing a medical device for "persons at risk of cardiac arrest." It is a LifeVest wearable defibrillator. He started using it sometime after his January 2002 fainting spell, which was attributed to choking. Based on photos showing him wearing the device, one can conclude the fainting was due to atrial fibrillation (AF), which his father also had.
His father’s AF was caused by Graves? hyperthyroidism, which Barbara Bush also has. Bush Jr likely has AF and, less (…) -

WASHINGTON - In only his 17th press conference on Monday, Bush appeared to admit that not even the people around him are very smart, while giving another quip that didn’t make grammatical sense. "I’m going to find somebody who knows something about intelligence," Bush said, "and capable and honest and ready to do the job." On the budget, he said, "We will submit a budget that fits the times. It will provide every tool and resource to the military, will protect the (…) -

Room 3E880
Washington, DC 20301
Dear Secretary Rumsfeld,
For more than a year, now, I have corresponded with you several times seeking basic protective equipment for our troops, including body armor and uparmored Humvees. In your responses, you expressed to me your commitment to protecting our troops. However, your callous remarks yesterday call that commitment into serious question.
Your (…) -
Rumsfeld Query No Shock to Soldier’s Wife

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Regina Wilson wasn’t entirely surprised to see her ex-husband, a guardsman bound for Iraq, on television Wednesday challenging Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with a tough question.
"He is always like that," she said. "I don’t think he understands the concept of biting one’s tongue. It wouldn’t matter if it was (President) Bush himself standing there. He would have dissed him the same."

It was a Maalox moment for Donald Rumsfeld. At a forum held with U.S. troops in Kuwait who are headed to Iraq, the barrage of friendly fire soon scored a direct hit when a scout with the Tennessee National Guard, one Specialist Thomas Wilson, rose, and, his voice confident and clear but with an undertone of bafflement, asked:
"We’ve had troops in Iraq for coming up on three years and we’ve always staged here out of Kuwait. Now why do we soldiers have to dig through (…) -

WASHINGTON — The manufacturer of Humvees for the U.S. military and the company that adds armor to the utility vehicles are not running near production capacity and are making all that the Pentagon has requested, spokesmen for both companies said.
"If they call and say, ’You know, we really want more,’ we’ll get it done," said Lee Woodward, a spokesman for AM General, the Indiana company (…) -
Miracles Over Math

If America doesn’t wake up, it will soon become a big, dumb second-tier nation that values miracles over math and superstition over science. Thanks to the Republican’s embrace of anti-intellectualism and demagogic fundamentalism, we are already halfway there.
In the October 17 edition of the New York Times Magazine, Ron Suskind interviewed a key Bush aide that described the administration’s rejection of enlightenment principles. The aide chastised Suskind for living “in (…) -
Rumsfeld Sued for Alleged War Crimes
2 December 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentAlleging responsibility for war crimes and torture at Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib prison, a human rights group has filed a criminal complaint in Germany against US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other top US officials.
The New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and Berlin’s Republican Lawyers’ Association said they and five Iraqi citizens mistreated by US soldiers were seeking a probe by German federal prosecutors of leading US policymakers.
They said they had chosen (…)
