I’ve got your "GOOD NEWS" right here, pal!

Wars and conflicts International Governments USA

George Dubya Bush has been lambasting the press for not focusing on good news in our endless "war on terror", particularly in Iraq.

It’s high time we responded with some hopeful stories and became optimistic. Here are some examples of real progress I dug up just this week:

In Ramadi, 6 bodies were found two days ago, bound and gagged and dead. BUT...the good news is that they hadn’t been tortured!

7 new schools opened in just the last month, according to the Coalition assessments. That leaves just 1789 to got to get back to original levels..but hey!..at least those 180 kids in the new ones are happy!

This month only about one US soldier is dying per day...that’s WAY down from the last several month’s averages. Of course hundreds of Iraqis are dying each week, but that’s just those pesky insurgents (except for the handful of women and children we "accidentally" killed when we got ticked off).

Electricity is fully functional for most citizens now for over 3 hours per day (outside Baghdad). Although that’s nowhere near what it was before the "war", it’s a sign that perhaps in a decade or so we’ll be back up to a reasonable level.

Water is still tainted, and gas is expensive (long lines), and food prices have soared, but there are plenty of US aid people in Iraq trying to make a difference. Surely SOMETIME this situation MUST get better....surely!

  • Surely. Surely. As sure as pigs can fly and bleat "All is well." As surely as Bush can stick his thumb up his rear end and say that victory is near. As surely as having Karl Rove volunteer for regular army duty in Iraq carrying a rifle. As surely as having Condi Rice standing in Baghdad and saying that now she has brought liberty, and democracy and sovereignty and peace and beauty to the Iraqi people. As surely as having Dick Cheney come to Iraq with his shotgun loaded for quail to defend the American people so that those Muslims won’t come to Washington and shit on his tulips.

  • You didn’t really think GW gives a shit about people there now did you?He obviously dosen’t even give a hoot what happens to the welfare of his own people. We are all just in the way, just another liabiliy on the balance sheet of the multinational corporations he hopes to enrich.I guess he rationalizes it by thinking hes doing us a favor by doing his part to keep tne population explosion in check! Why rebuild anything or care about a few hundred thousand deaths when you know you are doing your best to bring about armegedden, you know we gotta make sure those things in the bible come true now don’t you?Was was it he said about Christian family values? No family,no values to worry about Iguess.

  • They should have to hose the blood and brains off sidewalks for a while and see what they think about the mess they have created then.

They are the worst excuses for human beings this country has ever produced.

    • ........not forgetting they’re where they are fraudulently, blatantly flaunting their contempt for democracy in a rigged election.

  • are you here in iraq? if not, do you believe everything you read in the papers or see on TV? do you think the media gets all the stories around here? i’m in ramadi, and we don’t see too many reporters around here. i’m not exactly sure how anyone outside of here could make an informed opinion about what goes on here. i’m not saying we have the best of all possible worlds here, but when i’m out on patrol and see the local insurgents who have been fighting us turn instead to driving al qaeda operatives out of their country, i believe things may start to get a little better.

come down here and go on patrol with my crew when we go through a neighborhood and talk to the local leaders about fixing up a marketplace or school, or drop off school books, or simply chat with the kids about football and then give them all the food we have in our truck. take it all in for awhile, and then try to continue with your holier-than-thou rants.

    • To Cade: Holier than thou? Go to hell. Explain then why 11 civilians were killed by American soldiers in Abu Sifa this weekend. Explain why 23 Iraqis, the majority women and children, were killed by American GIs in Haditha. And this is just the tip of a murderous iceberg. More than 38,000 Iraqis have been killed since the US Army invaded, the majority have been killed not by terrorists, but by US munitions. You don’t know the half of it. Are you telling us that these massacres didn’t happen? You can go on with your ’aw shucks’ ma’am attitude, handing out Baby Ruths to unsuspecting Iraqi children and fooling the mass media with your horseshit but you’re no longer fooling the world. By the way, the US mass media didn’t cover any of these massacres whatsoever. No sir, this information was found strictly on the net. You my friend forget one important thing: You & your compatriots have no business being there. Iraq had nothing to do with Al-Qaeda and Iraq isn’t your country, capice? Things will only get better once the US forces leave forever.
I’m not exactly sure how any of you brainwashed bozos in the US Army can make sense of anything, let alone the world of shit you are all in.

    • I’m sure the Iraqis love being patronised and treated just as if they were third world orphans. Handing out sweets indeed. LOL. I’m sure US children would love to be handed sweets and the country destroyed and overun with Iraqi troops?

Lets not forget, OK Saddam was a cunt, no more than Bush or Blair, but the countrys health service and infrastructure was one of the best in the world till the 10 year sponsored US sanctions and bombs begun to rain down.

    • sir, you say you got your information not from the u.s. media but from the internet? who’s to say that is a reliable source instead? do you actually believe everything you read on the internet? now who’s the one that’s brainwashed?

i am an independent thinker, and our crews, out there on the "front lines" have to think and work independently at times of directives or "propaganda" from higher. we are the only americans here who could possibly know what is going on out here beyond the wire, as we rarely see reporters of any vein—american, international, print, TV, internet, whatever.

if i hand out candy—a symbol of the positive work we do here which extends to rebuilding and funding schools and police stations among other civic works—i am labeled a simpleton. if i kill someone, someone who would like nothing more than to kill any westerner with an open mind, then i am labeled a murderer or worse. i cannot win here. i tip my hat to you, sir. have a nice life, and i guess i’ll see you in hell, if you’d prefer i’d go there.

    • Cade: The news information I have found from internet outlets around the world is far more reliable and truthful than the garbage that CNN, FOX or the New York Times spews out daily. I don’t have all day to explain to anyone why this is so, either you know or you don’t, either you take the time out to do your own homework about the world, and arrive at your own conclusions, or you can be mentally lazy and take what the mainstream media tells you as the gospel truth. If you do take the lazy way out, and decide to only believe in what the mass media and the Federal Government tell us is the truth, then you will be very confused about everything happening in the world for the rest of your life, for their version of reality does not hold water. The mainstream media, which is more and more becoming another arm of the Federal Government, prefers to have a confused population to a knowledgeable one since the confused and the ignorant are easier to manipulate and control. I don’t like being confused. I like to be certain.
I am certain that this goddamned war is wrong. It is wrong for many reasons, some of which I have outlined previously in my original comment, reasons you refuse to confront. Again, to repeat, Iraq had nothing to do with Al-Qaeda, Iraq is not your country. Do you understand this? Either you believe that Al-Qaeda was indeed supported by the Iraqi government, something all US intelligence agencies have denied numerous times, (even the mass media concedes that Iraq had nothing to do with Al-Qaeda, so you must concede this as well) or you don’t. I don’t. Either you believe that God gave the US the holy prerogative to wage war against innocent countries so as to steal their natural resources, or you don’t. I don’t. Either you believe that the US should become a Global Empire, bereft of any legal or moral authority, betraying all of its core values as it becomes this Empire, or you don’t. I don’t.
You’re not too sure what to believe. How can you be, when you still can’t explain these massacres in Abu Sifa, in Haditha, in Mosul, [the list is endless]? How can you be sure what to believe when you still deny that you’re in a midst of a civil war, a civil war caused directly by the US occupation of Iraq? How different is this situation from that of any American soldier in Vietnam? The only difference is in geography, culture and timeline. Other than that, to a common soldier there is no difference at all. You think the Army took any time in educating its troops on the Vietnamese language or culture over 35 years ago? We too believed that we were fighting for our ‘freedom’ in Vietnam, a valiant stand against communism, and that awful war turned out to be yet another lie that Federal Government had spoon fed us. Vietnam was just the bloodiest of war games created by the military industrial complex to test their newest multi-million dollar toys, and reap huge billion dollar contracts at the same time. The domino theory didn’t hold any water at all. The fall of Vietnam did not bring down Thailand, the Philippines or any other part of Southeast Asia at all. The fall of Vietnam didn’t bring communism to Japan, or Hawaii, as many of the pro-war hawks had us to believe. Did we as a nation learn anything from Vietnam? So why is this constant killing happening now in Iraq? The answer is the same as it was in Vietnam. The answer is right in front of your nose: you and your buddies have no right to be there & it is not your country. Any other answer would not be truthful. You say you are fighting for our freedom, and I say you are very wrong sir to believe in that godforsaken lie. I say you are helping to put down our freedom, since this war has only made America more vulnerable to terrorist activity by creating more terrorists than ever before, the pretext to this godforsaken war has allowed a lawless administration to trample over our Constitution with impunity, and this ongoing nightmare of a war has allowed the corrupt to completely take over our nation. For these basic reasons, this war of occupation and domination in Iraq is far worse for our country than Vietnam ever was.

I know you are soldier that was forced to go there and fight. This doesn’t mean that you are any more aware of what’s happening to you than anyone else. In fact it’s far more likely that you know very little of Iraq and its culture beyond what your superiors tell you in briefings. I’m sure you know the Army definition of a soldier: a mushroom. I too was fed a ton of bullshit and left in the dark by the good old US Army, so don’t ever think I don’t know what kind of world you are in now.
You, my friend, are in the same boat I was in long ago, so let’s be brutally frank about what constitutes brainwashing and what doesn’t. You’ve been indoctrinated since you were in boot camp and you get virtually all your information about the outside world from your superiors and their favorite outlet, ‘Stars and Stripes’, especially now since the military has decided to take down all your blogs and websites. You also get a lot media half-truths as well, (after all you still watch American television over there, don’t you?). But that’s ok with your brass since the mass media in our country have become nothing but over paid pom-pom girls for the military. This is pitiful information, my friend, pitiful, indeed. In fact it’s worse than having no information at all. It’s nothing but a propaganda rag.
One more thought before I go blissfully into the afterlife: I don’t wish any one to go to hell, Cade, especially a young American soldier whose in a world of shit not of his own doing. But I do believe that we are fast approaching the point of no return, and people, especially our people, need to start waking up about the truth, before there is no freedom left at all to fight for. So please forgive me if in my haste to awaken a few souls I must use harsh, sometimes offensive language to get my point across.
But if you wish to respond to this post, please at least don’t deny that tens of thousands of Iraqis, if not hundreds of thousands have been killed that would never have been killed if the US had never invaded. Don’t ignore my first comment directed at you: Iraqis have been and continue to be killed by American fire power. If your superiors are telling you that the majority of these innocent people have been killed by terrorists, then think again, [you do say you are an independent thinker] who has more munitions, more materiel, more missiles, more A-10s, more Howitzers, more rpgs, more mortar, more artillery, more tanks, more napalm, more phosphorus, more F-16s, more depleted uranium: ten thousand or so insurgents in the desert or the mightiest military machine in world history? Who’s fooling who, here, soldier? Who’s brainwashing who?
