IS GEORGE BUSH A LIAR?

The American public has now had 4 years of what is loosely called “Bush Leadership.” According to most polls, about half of the nation thinks G.W.Bush is some kind of heroic or even saintly figure, and the other half thinks he is a shallow smirking strutting popinjay who is determined to destroy the democracy he found intact when he was given the Presidency by the Supreme Court.

Many people have charged that he has a firm propensity to misinform, deceive or even maliciously lie in order to gain some corporate goal advantage. Other people believe he talks to his God and therefore would not ever lie.

Perhaps asking some rhetorical questions might clarify the issue of whether Bush deliberately lies, makes simple but good-hearted mistakes, and is an innocent person who is deceived by bad people, or follows advice from his God.

Did Bush make war on Iraq in order to avenge an attempt on the life of his father?

Did Bush make war on Iraq because he showed that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 destruction of the Twin Towers and Pentagon?

Did Bush make war on Iraq because he showed that Saddam Hussein of Iraq was the mastermind behind the 9/11 disaster, or, at the very least, was an accomplice or patron of Osama bin Laden?

Did Bush make war on Iraq because he couldn’t catch Osama bin Laden, then decided to save face by regime changing in Iraq?

Did Bush decide to make war on Iraq long before the 9/1l disaster, as he was involved with the neoconservative plots to dominate the world?

Did Bush decide to make war on Iraq because his associates (V.P. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove, et al) talked him into it?

Did Bush decide to make war on Iraq because he knew that after the Gulf War the Iraqi army was sadly deficient, and that he could easily seize Iraqi oil wells to enrich his corporate partners?

Did Bush use emotional religious rhetoric, and the promise of supporting Christian domination, to persuade his True Believer supporters to give him carte blanche power, without any restraint?

Did any of the daily political rhetoric of Bush concerning Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction, nuclear works, aluminum tubes, yellow cake, pilotless planes to attack the U.S., etc., prove to be true?

Did Bush declare war on Iraq to free the Iraqis from an oppressive regime or to seize their country as a future base for expansion of U.S. interests?

Did Bush use cruise missiles, helicopters, Bunker Buster Bombs, Shock and Awe tactics, 120,000 troops in humvees with deadly weapons as a legitimate means of spreading Democracy?

Did soldiers under Bush’s orders kill many thousands of Iraqis; destroy their homes and infrastructure because this is a democratic way to spread Liberty?

Did 1,700 American soldiers die for their country, or to satisfy a politician’s desire to rule the world?

Did Bush understand what Sovereignty means when he appointed all Iraqi leadership, stage managed the “elections”, called Iraqi resistance fighters “thugs” and “terrorists”, began building a huge permanent airbase and embassy in Iraq, and will keep thousands of American soldiers in Iraq for many years in order to further his plans to invade Syria, Iran, and other countries.

Did Bush understand that the world believes he is corrupt because he handed Iraqi resources to Millennium Corporation without a contract, without hesitation, and that by coincidence V.P. Cheney just happened to be the chief operating officer of Millennium?

Did Bush understand that the world believes he is corrupt because billions of dollars have disappeared without a trace into his military and industrial friend’s pockets?

Did Bush understand that George Galloway spoke the truth about Bush corruption and incompetence?

Did Bush ever find out who outed his C.I.A. agent?

Did Bush know he was following neocon design and THE “PROJECT FOR THE NEW AMERICAN CENTURY” draft-dodging War Hawks in his cabinet?

Did Bush know he was turning Iraq over to greedy corporate neoconservatives?

Did Bush know or care that he was foisting his beliefs on the entire nation, that this is damnably intrusive and potentially a cause for civil and religious warfare?

Did Bush in any way enter into any question of abuse, torture, and detention of anyone he has detained beyond ordinary legal requirements?

Does Bush use fake journalists to praise him, highly select his audiences, have his bureaus write praises of his leadership, use Swift Boat people to demonize his opponent, and use phony phrases like MISSION ACCOMPLISHED so he can strut about as if he were a real soldier?

Did Bush know that turning his Oval Office into a Christian Chapel for Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson would turn into religious warfare with the possibility of civil war?

Please answer these rhetorical questions and decide if Bush lies and deceives often, or is open, honest and candid in all his dealings in the name and fame of the United States. Is this a government of the people, by the people and for the people, or a government of corporate executives, by corporate executives, for corporate executives and True Believers?

  • Very good questionaire! Bush is not the leader it is the group behind Chenny including also Liebermann. Democrats=Republicans or vice versa. To change the policy and the possibility that one party controls all houses and all power, the voting system has to be changed.

    • I’m glad you mentioned Switzerland. As an Anglo-Swiss (dual national) I have seen and voted in both the British and Swiss systems, and I prefer the Swiss. We have referenda (the plural of referendum) more than once a year, on national, contanal (state) and local (town or city) levels. This is our chance to get our say in what happens. It is is even possible, by getting enough signatures together (10,000 - 100,000 depending on level), to force a referendum to take place. The next one takes place on June 5, this year. Yes, I will be taking part. We also have elected representatives. The controlling council is called the Bundesrat, and consists of elected members from various political parties (not just two). Furthermore, the president is elected for a short period of time from this council. This is known as a representative democracy, where the people have a chance to make their voice heard directly.

      America, on the other hand, was meant to be a republic (read your history books), where the people work only through their elected representatives. This explains the mess that America is in, because there are no mechanisms in place to prevent lobbyist and special interest groups from taking control.

      The pity of it is, that I can see a time coming, when there will be a new American Revolution, mirroring the French and Russian ones, because the gap between the haves and have nots is getting too wide. The rest of the world had better duck when this happens, because the incumbents will strike out at any and all who get it their way as they are dragged down.

    • The scary thing is he knows he’s a liar but because he thinks he’s "God’s messenger," it’s perfectly justified. All of his lies, and there have been many, are driven by this extremism of religious ideology in making policy decisions. We’re in trouble-everybody better wake up-there will be many more lies to follow until he and his cabal of religious zealots get what they want-their redemption for a job well done.

    • Yes, see Switzerland for an example of a democracy that works. Constitutionally required referenda on every major category of government decisions, at local council level, at the canton level and at the federal level. A true federation of individuals, individuals are recognized as being more important than any level of government or business.

  • George Bush is not a liar. He was presented with evidence leading up to the Iraq War which indicated Saddam had WMD. Billl Clinton’s official policy on Iraq was ’regime change" but didn’t have the balls to do anything about it, except some limp-wristed actions like bombing Iraq for a couple of days. The attacks against us all over the world during the Clinton term, which he did nothing about, emboldened the enemy, made the enemy think America was weak, a paper tiger with no teeth. Please also recall that Clinton wined and dined Yassir Arafat over and over in the White House during those years. Clinton’s efforts to help the Palestinians didn’t have any effect on Osama Bin Laden, who started planning 9/11 in February of 2000, long before the national election that November.

    Bush felt, after 9/11 something had to be done about Saddam, a man obsessed with acquiring WMD, and who used WMD on Iran and the Kurds, and who invaded Kuwait. Bush had a choice: take a reckless gamble, as he correctly called it that Saddam would see the light and come around like Khaddafi, or take out Saddam. The rest is history. You may choose to believe it or disbelieve it. Now, it is very true, that the evidence ended up being faulty. That is an intelligence agency problem that we are now coming to grips with, both in the USA, and in Britain, apparently. It doesn’t make any sense to develop these conspiracy theories about it. We are engaged in a war against radical Islam, a war that must be won at all costs.

    Now to address the issue of the USA and being a republic. Our system works, and it will continue to work. The problem is that the will of the people is being subverted by radical left wing Judges sitting on appeal courts and the US Supreme Court (Ruth "Bad Girl" Ginsburg is a direct placement by the American Civil LIberties Union). The radical left knows that it cannot possibly gets its agenda passed legislatively. They have no choice but to ram it down the gullet of America through court rulings. Who in this country would agree that late-term abortion should be allowed with no medical justification?

    Example: on November 4, 11 states had on the ballot a question regarding allowing or NOT allowing homosexual marriage. ALL 11 states REJECTED homosexual marriage, and decisively. The radical left gay rights groups are now going to bring lawsuits in these states, and those suits will be decided in Federal appeal courts, on which sit left wing judges, like the Ninth Circuit ("Ninth Jerk-it Court of Schlemeels"). Those judges will then OVERTURN the will of the people in those 11 states, by saying the ruling was "unconstitutional" which effectively subverts the will of the majority of people who voted against homosexual marriage.

    Another example is the abortion law that allows minor females to be transported across state lines for abortions, WITHOUT their parents notification. The vast majority of Americans are AGAINST this. Yet, left wing Judges have ruled over and rule supporting this usurpation of parental authority and responsibility. We are going to have Judges appointed by the President that will uphold the will of the people. Period.

    Now, we are going to have a showdown in this country over Supreme Court nominees. The day when a Sandra Day O’Connor or John Paul STevens resigns will be the mother of all battles, because they are both considered "swing" Justices. President Bush received 3.5 million more votes than his competitor, and he knows that the next 50 years will be decided by who he appoints. He is going to appoint Judges that will affirm our Constitution, and not legislate from the bench. And we are going to have that battle.

    The deal just reached last night by the 14 "moderate" Senators, just lets the Republicans live to fight another day. That day is coming.

    • Even the most ardent Bush ideologue should concede that at the very least, the man is "loose with the facts." Others of course, know that the situation is much more dire than those who have been blinded by ignorance and fear. The above post is a perfect example. Gardis trots out all the old nonsense about pre-war Iraq, all of which has been proven to be false, time and again.

      Saddam had no WMDs. By 1995, for all intents and purposes he’d been defanged as a result of the post Gulf War inspections regime. Captured Iraqi scientists have confirmed this. There is a mountain of evidence to support this. Start with Scott Ritter.

      But the Bushites have never let the facts get in the way of their agenda. All one has to do is look at is Rummy’s memo immediatley after 9-11, or Wolfowitz’s admission that WMD was the excuse used to sell this adventure to the public. The recent Brit memo, released to the Sunday Times also confirms what anyone with a computer should have known by March of 03. Saddam also had no links to al Queda, or the 9-11 attacks. So if they weren’t lying when they implied the opposite, what do you call it? Iraq was a not a threat. The reasons used to launch the invasion were demonstrably false and much of the public was duped. Apparently some people still are.

      This wasn’t intelligence failure as this person claims (chirping the latest excuse from the White House); it was intelligence that was cooked through a nefarious network of administration operatives and propagandists, foreign and domestic. It was an abuse of a well established system of protocol, that, while far from perfect, was intended to avoid post Gulf of Tonkin fuck-ups. But the neo cons went to war against the old systems and set up the Office of Special Plans. Not only did they stovepipe intelligence so that it conformed to a pre-decided policy, they were sloppy as well. For example, here’s what Joe wilson had to say about his trip to Niger in search of "Yellow Cake":

Moreover, because the two mines are closely regulated, quasi-governmental entities, selling uranium would require the approval of the minister of mines, the prime minister and probably the president. In short, there’s simply too much oversight over too small an industry for a sale to have transpired."

The audiences are all restricted and the questions are all vetted. And he has veto powers which in itself is undemocratic. The Congressmen and Senators all are in the pockets of the lobbyists and interest groups; in particular the Jews and AIPAC.

      The Gore Study of Aviation Security was fought by Republicans in Congress.

      The study recommended—SECURE THECOCKPITS—what happened.The airlines and Republican pals in Congress fought tooth and nail to stop it.

      The Airlines Pilots Association had been fighting since 1970 to get SECURE COCKPITS.

      The Airlines and Republicans fought them as TOO EXPENSIVE.

      Origins: In chronological order:

      On 26 February 1993, a car loaded with 1,200 pounds of explosives blew up in a parking garage under the World Trade Center, killing six people and injuring about a thousand others. The blast did not, as its planners intended, bring down the towers — that was finally accomplished by flying two hijacked airliners into the twin towers on the morning of 11 September 2001.
      Four followers of the Egyptian cleric Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman were captured, convicted of the World Trade Center bombing in March 1994, and sentenced to 240 years in prison each. The purported mastermind of the plot, Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, was captured in 1995, convicted of the bombing in November 1997, and also sentenced to 240 years in prison. One additional suspect fled the U.S. and is believed to be living in Baghdad.

      On 13 November 1995, a bomb was set off in a van parked in front of an American-run military training center in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, killing five Americans and two Indians. Saudi Arabian authorities arrested four Saudi nationals whom they claim confessed to the bombings, but U.S. officials were denied permission to see or question the suspects before they were convicted and beheaded in May 1996.

      On 25 June 1996, a booby-trapped truck loaded with 5,000 pounds of explosives was exploded outside the Khobar Towers apartment complex which housed United States military personnel in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, killing nineteen Americans and wounding about three hundred others. Once again, the U.S. investigation was hampered by the refusal of Saudi officials to allow the FBI to question suspects.
      On 21 June 2001, just before the American statute of limitations would have expired, a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia, indicted thirteen Saudis and an unidentified Lebanese chemist for the Khobar Towers bombing. The suspects remain in Saudi custody, beyond the reach of the American justice system. (Saudi Arabia has no extradition treaty with the U.S.)

      On 7 August 1998, powerful car bombs exploded minutes apart outside the United States embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 224 people and wounding about 5,000 others. Four participants with ties to Osama bin Laden were captured, convicted in U.S. federal court, and sentenced to life in prison without parole in October 2001. Fourteen other suspects indicted in the case remain at large, and three more are fighting extradition in London.

      On 12 October 2000, two suicide bombers detonated an explosives-laden skiff next to the USS Cole while it was refueling in Aden, Yemen, blasting a hole in the ship that killed 17 sailors and injured 37 others. No suspects have yet been arrested or indicted. The investigation has been hampered by the refusal of Yemini officials to allow FBI agents access to Yemeni nationals and other suspects in custody in Yemen.
      (The USS Cole bombing occurred one month before the 2000 presidential election, so even under the best of circumstances it was unlikely that the investigation could have been completed before the end of President Clinton’s term of office three months later.)

      In August 1998, President Clinton ordered missile strikes against targets in Afghanistan in an effort to hit Osama bin Laden, who had been linked to the embassy bombings in Africa (and was later connected to the attack on the USS Cole). The missiles reportedly missed bin Laden by a few hours, and Clinton was widely criticized by many who claimed he had ordered the strikes primarily to draw attention away from the Monica Lewinsky scandal. As John F. Harris wrote in The Washington Post:

      In August 1998, when [Clinton] ordered missile strikes in an effort to kill Osama bin Laden, there was widespread speculation — from such people as Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) — that he was acting precipitously to draw attention away from the Monica S. Lewinsky scandal, then at full boil. Some said he was mistaken for personalizing the terrorism struggle so much around bin Laden. And when he ordered the closing of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House after domestic terrorism in Oklahoma City, some Republicans accused him of hysteria.
      . . . the federal budget on anti-terror activities tripled during Clinton’s watch, to about $6.7 billion. After the effort to kill bin Laden with missiles in August 1998 failed — he had apparently left a training camp in Afghanistan a few hours earlier — recent news reports have detailed numerous other instances, as late as December 2000, when Clinton was on the verge of unleashing the military again. In each case, the White House chose not to act because of uncertainty that intelligence was good enough to find bin Laden, and concern that a failed attack would only enhance his stature in the Arab world.

      . . . people maintain Clinton should have adapted Bush’s policy promising that regimes that harbor terrorism will be treated as severely as terrorists themselves, and threatening to evict the Taliban from power in Afghanistan unless leaders meet his demands to produce bin Laden and associates. But Clinton aides said such a policy — potentially involving a full-scale war in central Asia — was not plausible before politics the world over became transformed by one of history’s most lethal acts of terrorism.

    • Bill Clinton HAD BALLS AND INTELLIGENCE to know that you don’t do "regime change" just like that, and he didn’t put his troops into unnecessary danger or into doomed or no-win situations. I guess he must have wined and dined Arafat in order to SEEK some sort of agreement to attain at least some measure to stop the violence in Palestine. I assume Clinton tried brokering some sort of peace at some level.

      However, if Bush was shown evidence of Saddam’s WMD, which he probably had, because the U.S. had provided him with bio weapons back in the early 80’s, he could still have gone about a war in a different way, one which would not cause the extreme number of unnecessary casualties that have happened on both sides. But maybe he has the same mentality as you apparently have: kill and destroy so they can be fearful! Well, that is THE EXACT attitude that emboldens the enemy against America, not what you called "the limp-wristed actions" of a former intelligent president! Did you ever think there may be more than one way of dealing with an enemy? After all if Bush went after Saddam, how come it’s American troops and innocent Iraqui civilians who have and are paying the price, while Saddam sits, very much alive in a nice jail? What happened to the danger of Saddam? Why not kill him? That would end him! Can you reply to this? Nothing Bush has done wrong is EVER his fault. the CIA and FBI had to take the fall when no WMD were found although there is proof from Downing report that Bush ’massaged’ the case for attacking Iraq. Long before 9/11 he was planning the attack on Iraq.

    • Where do you get it that the courts are stacked with left-wing liberal judges? The majority of the judges in the federal courts are Republican appointees. Fortunately, may of those appointees interpret law as they understand it, and not because of their political party affiliation. You want to talk activist judges? Try Priscilla Owen, who was declared by then Texas Supreme Court Justice and now US Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez who, in an opinion, accused her of the worst example of judicial activism he had seen. Her rulings always favored corporations and campaign contributors over the people who sued them. Stop whining about left-wing judges, because very few serve on the courts. Even the 9th circuit court of appeals now has a member who got promoted by Bush after writing legal opinions in support of torture. Just because we can bomb the crap out of a small nation, invade it, kill thousands upon thousands of civilians, does not make us a strong nation. We are only strong when we adhere to our founding principles and live up to our potential as a humane nation, working together for the benefit of "we the people." We certainly haven’t had that kind of nation in the last 4 1/2 years because the Bush brigade defines what’s good for the American people as what’s good for themselves and their corporate cronies.

    We are a nation damned.

    There were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. We are past being able to pretend otherwise, no matter what comfort might be found in the deception. The United States Government has openly admitted there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The United States Government has openly admitted there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. The United States Government has openly admitted there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and 9-11. The United States has invaded and conquered a foreign nation under false pretexts. President Bush and his cronies lied us all into a war.

    But that is not why we are damned.

    The culmination of decades of accumulated overspending by the government has created an aggregate debt for the United States federal and state governments of $14 trillion dollars. That?s fourteen million million dollars. Or, to put it in a more personal scale, more than $48,000 for every single living human being in the United States, plus the accumulating interest.

    The interest on that government debt now exceeds all the personal income tax collected by that government. That means that the government isn?t keeping up with the interest on the debt, let alone able to pay down the principle. Even before the wars started with lies, the US Government was sinking deeper into debt by one third of a trillion dollars every year. With Bush?s war, the debt is increasing at another half trillion every year just at the Federal level. And because the federal Government, struggling with payments on past debts, is sending less money back to the states, the states are sinking deeper into debt as well.

    But that is not why we are damned.

    The national fiscal crisis is accelerating because of soaring unemployment, and the forced migration of workers from higher paying jobs to lower paying ones. This is occurring for two reasons. The first is that as tax revenues falter, the cash-strapped government raises tax rates. This increases the cost of products and services inside the United States without increasing their quality or desirability. Indeed American companies, struggling to keep prices competitive, are forced to sacrifice quality.

    As an inevitable result, American companies have either been driven out of business by foreign competition able to sell superior products at lower prices, or been forced to outsource their own operations to regions with lower tax burdens.

    The US Government attempted to conceal this loss of manufacturing with the so-called ?Service Economy?, the ludicrous notion that one can prosper a nation by doing each other?s laundry for a fee. But while the moving of cash back and forth for services created more opportunities for taxation, fewer and fewer products were being made within the United States for sales to foreign countries. All the while, Americans were buying foreign-made products because they were of better quality and lower price than American products. Indeed many products needed for every day life are simply not made in the USA any more. When Ampex invented the VCR, they did not even bother approaching American manufacturers but licensed directly to the Japanese. When Seymour Cray was building his supercomputers, the chips he needed were only available from Japanese manufacturers.

    Money is flowing out of the country at a billion and a half dollars per day. And as government debt drives taxes higher, the situation can only get worse.

    But that is not why we are damned.

    Despite the huge government debt, despite the loss of manufacturing over the last 30 years, despite soaring unemployment, despite American women and children sleeping in alleys and eating out of trash cans, the United States government hands out trillions of dollars as gifts to their friends (who used to be their enemies) and to make war on their enemies (who used to be their friends).

    But that is not why we are damned.

    Maybe the problem is the Congress. Congress is supposed to represent the people, but a body composed of millionaires and lawyers can hardly be expected to understand how to actually make things work. Maybe Congress would better serve the people if it were made up of teachers, doctors, road engineers, factory workers, bakers, people who actually know how to make a nation function, build an infrastructure, and know what it is like to have to live paycheck to paycheck in a nation where the government makes more money off of your work than you do and is always asking for more.

    But that is not why we are damned.

    We are damned because we know all the above and do nothing. Like the Germans of 1930s Germany we see Der Fuhrer trying to distract the populace from the self-serving choices the government makes by creating a war with lies and deceptions, yet stay silent, less we be accused of being traitors to the national security. We voice our outrage when a rock star bares her breast at a sporting event, because rock stars cannot after all hurt us, raise our taxes, or conscript our children to be crippled or killed in wars. But we remain silent, or at best speak in hushed tones with a trusted few of our concerns about the government, which does hurt us, which does raise our taxes, and which has and continues to conscript our children to be crippled or killed in wars.

    We are damned by our silence. We are damned by our inaction. We are damned by our fear to speak out. We are damned by our weakness. We are damned by being sheep under a government of wolves.

    We are damned unless and until you realize that your anger and outrage must be targeted where it is needed, not just where it is harmless. We are damned by our willingness to be angry with those who cannot affect our lives, while remaining too afraid to be angry with those who can. We are damned because individuals who refuse to obey the law morally offend us, but we remain enablers of a government that refuses to obey the Constitution. We are damned until WE THE PEOPLE remember that we ARE a people, and that this nation is US.

    The President is not the nation. The media is not the nation. The selfish desires of a powerful few are not the nation. The Congress is not the nation.

    We are damned because we have forgotten that the government is the employee of the people, and that like any employee the government is required to obey orders, not to give them.

    We are damned because we have forgotten that as the employers of the government, we have the right to decide what our employees can do and more importantly, what they cannot.
