Wars and conflicts International

Just after the 6th anniversary of the illegal, war criminal invasion of Iraq by the US, UK and Australia I received from the eminent Brussels Tribunal organization a detailed statement by Iraqi woman academic Professor Souad N. Al-Azzawi. We are both members of the Advisory Board of the BRussells Committee (see: http://www.brusselstribunal.org/abo... ) .

Her article is entitled “Let the Numbers speak” and details horrendous carnage in Occupied Iraq over 6 years of foreign occupation and is reproduced below in the interests of Humanity. For links to Professor Al-Azzawi’s article see MWC News: http://mwcnews.net/content/view/294... , Countercurrents: http://www.countercurrents.org/azza... and the BRussells Tribunal: http://www.brusselstribunal.org/Sou... .

LET THE NUMBERS SPEAK

Dr. Souad N. Al-Azzawi, Associate Professor, Baghdad, Iraq, member of the BRussells Tribunal
Advisory Committee (26 March 2009)

Dear Friends,

I pride myself in being a scientist and a researcher. I built my academic career on theories and numbers. As a teacher, I teach my students that everything is based in science - everything has reason. For this reason, I am always frustrated with myself when I find I am overwhelmed with feelings on specific topics.

One such topic is the occupation of my country, Iraq. On this subject I find that I cannot always be dispassionate. I cannot be the researcher and observer and discuss it without feeling or emotion as I am sometimes expected to do. I find myself doing research on the damages caused by the war and occupation, and my head buzzes with anger, my eyes burn with tears of desperation at the state of my country.

Six years after the attack and the pain is as fresh and cutting as it was in March 2003. This year, I decided, I would view it as a scientist. I would not attack the subject with emotion. I would let the numbers speak for themselves. This year I will sit back and play the part of the analyst- the researcher- on this topic that is closest to my heart.

Six years into the occupation…
 72 months of destruction
$607 Billions spent on the war
2 Million Barrels of oil being sold per day
2 Million Displaced Iraqis inside of Iraq
3 Million Iraqis forced to leave the country
2615 professors, scientists, and doctors killed in cold blood
 338 dead journalists
$13 Billion misplaced by the current Iraqi government
$400 Billion required to rebuild the Iraqi infrastructure
3 hours average of electricity daily
 24 car bombs per month
7 major mafias running the country
 4260 Americans dead
10,000 cases of cholera per year
 50 of my friends dead
 22 of my relatives dead
15 abductions of close relatives and people I know and love
At least 1.3 million Iraqis dead since 2003.

Six years into the occupation and somehow, the numbers are not looking better. Year after dismal year, the numbers of dead and displaced grow as we continue to reap the rewards of an American occupation on our country.

So the numbers speak for themselves. Six. Six months is what it took for most Iraqis to realize no good could come of this war and occupation. Six years is what it has taken the rest of the world. Six years, six million Iraqis displaced inside and outside of Iraq- well over a million Iraqis dead or dying inside of the country.

As a scientist, as a researcher- it is a disaster that will never be sufficiently documented with numbers or words. As a researcher, the numbers are so astounding that we go back and recalculate to make sure they are real. As an Iraqi, it is enraging. The numbers and statistics fill me with a rage and shame that make my heart throb and my blood boil. It’s a rage towards all who are silent and uncaring, and a shame at the little we all are doing.

MY PERSONAL COMMENT on this shocking testament from an eminent Iraqi woman academic is as follows: 6 years after the war criminal UK, UK and Australia (US Alliance, US Coalition) invasion of Iraq, Mainstream Media still ignore the authoritatively estimated (UN agencies and top medical literature) post-invasion carnage involving 1.3 million violent Iraqi deaths, 1 million non-violent excess deaths, 0.6 million under-5 infant deaths, 6 million refugees, 5 million Iraqi orphans, $3 trillion accrual cost to the US and $29 trillion Reparations Bill for the war criminal US Alliance (notably the US, UK and Australia) (for details and documentation see “ Iraq invasion 6th anniversary. 2.3 million Iraqi excess deaths”: http://mwcnews.net/content/view/293... ).

There being no justification for the invasion, the violent Iraqi deaths are clearly war crimes, and so too are the post-invasion non-violent deaths from deprivation. Thus under Articles 55 and 56 of the Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, an Occupier is obliged to supply life-sustaining food and medical requisites to the conquered subjects “to the fullest extent of the means available to it” (see Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War: http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/92.htm ). However, consulting the World Health Organization (WHO) (see WHO: http://www.who.int/countries/en/ ) reveals that the “total expenditure on health per capita” in Occupied Iraq is $124 as compared to $6,714 for the occupier country, the US.

What the Big Oil-, Military Industrial Complex- and Zionist-beholden US Alliance has done to Occupied Iraq is an Iraqi Holocaust and an Iraqi Genocide as defined by Article 2 of the UN Genocide Convention (see U N Genocide Convention: http://www.edwebproject.org/sidesho... ) . All complicit politicians in the Western Murdochracies - Bush, Blair, Brown, Rudd, Obama et al - and their accomplices should be arraigned before the International Criminal Court (ICC ).

I have sent detailed, documented formal complaints to the International Criminal Court (see “Formal complaint to the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court re Australian Government involvement in Aboriginal Genocide, Iraqi Genocide, Afghan Genocide and Climate Genocide”: http://climateemergency.blogspot.co... ).

However the Iraqi Holocaust and Iraqi Genocide constitutes but one part of the US War on Terror that is horrible reality is a cowardly and racist war on Women and Children and more specifically a War on Arab Women and Children, War on Muslim Women and Children, War on Asian Women and Children, and a War on non-European Women and Children.

Thus in the Occupied Palestinian, Iraqi and Afghan Territories post-invasion non-violent excess deaths 0.3 million, 1 million and 4 million, respectively; post-invasion violent excess deaths 10,000, 1 million and possibly 2 million, respectively [if the Occupied Afghanistan violent/non-violent excess death ratio is half that in Occupied Iraq]; post-invasion under-5 year old infant deaths 0.2 million, 0.6 million and 2.1 million, respectively; refugees totalling 7 million, 6 million and 4 million, respectively – Genocides as defined by Article 2 of the UN Genocide Convention (see “Iraqi Massacre ignored by media. Lying over Iraqi Genocide”: http://mwcnews.net/content/view/289... ).

What can decent people do? Peace is the only way but silence kills and silence is complicity. Decent people must (a) inform others and (b) eschew avoidable dealings with people, corporations and countries involved in the Iraqi Holocaust and Iraqi Genocide, the Palestinian Holocaust and Palestinian Genocide, the Afghan Holocaust and Afghan Genocide.

UN Population Division data it can be estimated that the “annual death rate” for under-5 year old infants in the Occupied Palestinian, Iraqi and Afghan Territories is 1.6%, 2.2% and 6.5%, respectively - as compared to an “annual death rate” of 10% for Australian prisoners of war of the Japanese (for which war crimes Japanese generals were tried and hanged).

People who knowingly and avoidably buy goods and services from the racist, mass paedocidal, genocidal, anti-Arab anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, “democratic Nazi” countries of the US Alliance – notably from the US, UK, racist White Australia, racist Zionist (RZ)-run Apartheid Israel, Canada, France, Germany and the Netherlands – variously become party to the active mass murder of Indigenous infants in the Occupied Palestinian, Iraqi and Afghan Territories.

Please send Professor Al-Azzawi’s statement to everyone you know - we cannot walk by on the other side, we cannot ignore the continuing mass murder of innocents by the war criminal US Alliance.

  • Professor Souad N. Al-Azzawi is a sucessful engineer and well known academic who knows what those numbers means to the Iraqis. The problem is how to draw the attention of the UN, International organizations, and those who claim they are rasing democracy in Iraq!.
