Wars and conflicts International Governments USA

Dear Editor: There are those who would have us continually proclaim to the world that the United States is the best and greatest nation and that it is our duty to bestow our blessings upon all other peoples.

No other nation, they proclaim, is as free, wealthy, innocent, compassionate, able or well-meaning as ours. Life in these United States, they declare, is better than in any other place in the world.

There is a lot in these claims with which most of us agree.

However, most patriots are acutely aware of the numerous shortcomings, injustices and waste that seem an inexorable element of our national life. The current administration declares that to dwell on these is to be an enemy of America.

Patriots know that we ignore our shortcomings at our peril. Patriots are strong and brave enough to face the realities of this nation. Patriots measure the distance between the reality and the ideal. Patriots use this measure to encourage each other to continue to strive for the ideal.

The method is long, arduous, filled with compromise and rarely personally fulfilling for those patriots who work so hard for progress. This is the path of democracy. It is very messy.

Many patriots are sure that the country is on the wrong course, in a variety of ways. These patriots are equally sure of the good sense and intentions of most of their fellow citizens, knowing that what some of us see as symptoms, others see as causes. Patriots believe that people of good will have and will continue to disagree about almost everything as they work together to find means and methods all can share.

In the name of promoting democracy throughout the world, the current administration has embarked upon a course which is smothering democracy in this country. This administration justified its attack on Iraq with conflated and fabricated evidence of the possibility that Iraq might be a real threat in the future.

Patriots know, however, that all of the administration’s falsehoods pale in comparison to the fundamental transgression of the Bush administration: the unprovoked attack on another country.

Patriots and all God-fearing Americans must tremble for our country knowing that God is just. Like most criminals, the gang controlling the executive branch of the government of the United States thinks laws don’t apply to them.

Those who approve of their actions share in their guilt. Those who do nothing share in their guilt. George W. Bush infamously declared, "You are either with us, or against us." There is no middle ground. Patriots must act. There is but one honorable and patriotic action: the impeachment and conviction of George Bush and Dick Cheney for war crimes.

God bless the USA.

  • If you really need to imply God in everything you do, try at least something like: "God Bless the World". This may help to sound less egocentric and arrogant.

  • God and America are not going together.

    God is love not murder!

    Support your troops American bastards!

    • I Served in the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991. I was promised full veterans benefits. I have not recieved them. Furthermore, veterans benefits are of low quality. George Bush cut verterans benefits the day after he invaded Iraq. In short, I did my duty, and I continue to support the troops. I think that most people in the U.S. DO NOT know what support is. Many people in the U.S. think supporting the troops is hanging yellow ribbons and sending care packages. Support is giving the troops the tools they need, giving them excellent benefits for a job that most people don’t want to do, and judging politicians for military actions not the troops. In the Marines we believed in and practiced integrity and accountablilty. The United States needs to do the same for itself and for George Bush and Dick Cheney. Steve, Wisconsin.

    • I agree. Putting a yellow ribbon on a gas-guzzling, foreign-oil dependent SUV is not true support of the troops. My feeling is that the honorable men and women who have volunteered to serve our country should only be sent to war AS A VERY LAST RESORT. We all know now that The Invasion of Iraq was based on skewed and manipulated intelligence. This makes George Bush a terrorist. As defined by the FBI. More than 3,000 people (of all nationalities and creeds) died in the 9/11 attacks. George Bush’s war, in addition to the nearly 2,000 service people lost (and countless wounded), has killed over 25,00 Iraqui CIVILIANS. That’s some "Culture of Life"! Support the troops at www.operationtruth.org

    • "I served in the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991"......SUCKER....you’re getting what you deserve a kick in the pants from your corrupt government full of crimminals that are career leeches on the system and you are a stupid ass for supporting them and letting them use you for a SUCKER.

    • I may be a stupid ass, but I did not support Bush one and do not support Bush two. You are right they are all leeches. I served because I believe in this country, not the poeple who run it. If the people of this country held the corrupt politicians accountable every time and all the time things would be much better. Impeach Bush. Impeach the corrupt president in 2009. Don’t vote for the same politicain twice!

    • maybe you should go ahead and move to france then. at least there you would get the kind of leadership you are looking for.

    • I Hope this bastard finally gets impeached for what he’s done.

    • To "France" guy. I guess you agree with what I said, bush is a liar and should be impeached. But since this is the United States of America and truth and integrity are dead here bush will likely get away with his lies.

  • C’mon you guys. Did you miss Mr. Baldwin’s point? You don’t have to agree with the God talk to see he’s got the right idea. Can’t we reach out to each other despite of our minor differences?

  • We went into Iraq because Isreal wanted us to. Washington is zionist occupied territory. This is not a conspiracy theory. It is a reality that the rest of the educated world is aware of. The evidence is out there for any "Patriot" willing to face the truth about this country.
The latest outrage; In defiance of and utter disregard for Pres. Bush’s "Roadmap to Peace", Sharon decides to unilaterally remove all the terrorist settlers from Gaza. And he has asked that American taxpayers should compensate these pychopaths to the tune of 240,000 per settler. And without flinching, congress will give it to them. Can’t afford proper protection and benefits for the troops fighting for Israel, emergency rooms closing, school budgets being cut, ect....and yet we are about to give a quarter of a million dollars of our tax money to these criminals who never belonged in Gaza in the first place. America gains nothing from this withdrawl. And this is just the latest outrage. Nothing new really. I sure wish all you Patriots would wake up, struggle to shake off all the zionist media brainwashing you’d been raised on, and focus on the horrible reality our country finds itself in. Impeach Bush? Whatever. crucifying the patsy never solved the problem.
