HITLER, STALIN, BUSH .. MEN OF OUR TIME

by Brian Reade

BEFORE you lash the big bird in the bin and stick your head in the oven instead, let’s put Time magazine’s declaration of George Bush as the Man of the Year in perspective.

In 1938 the same august organ gave the accolade to Adolf Hitler. A year later this most prestigious award went to another deranged mass-murderer, called Joseph Stalin. So maybe we should applaud Time’s consistency in lowering Bush on to the same pedestal.

Scary world though, eh? A bit of an indictment of the progress homo sapiens has made these past few million years, that a man who this week stunned a press conference with the phrase: "I’m not going to negotiate with myself in public" should not only lead mankind but be hailed for that inspirational leadership by so-called intellectuals.

A man who last month said he was willing to help out with the Northern Ireland peace process, before breaking off to say he had to "go get a burger".

Call me old-fashioned but I thought this year’s heroes were people like the emergency workers of Madrid and Beslan, poisoned Ukrainian politician Viktor Yushchenko, executed aid worker Margaret Hassan, released nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu, even Bono. People whose lives are a force for good.

But no. According to America’s finest brains the person who made the biggest difference to the planet this year is the monkey-like puppet of ruthless neo-con hawks, who yelled "ah feel good," as he unleashed shock and awe on women and babies.

And he won because he edged an election victory in a land where half the voters registered their disgust at his policies which have killed thousands of people and dragged their country’s reputation into the gutter.

I know the Yanks aren’t big on irony but surely it hasn’t escaped Time’s notice that last year they gave the award to The American Soldier. More than a thousand of whom have died in Bush’s personal Iraq war, 19 this Tuesday.

Yet this year’s Man of the Year is honoured for killing last year’s in their droves? And Americans wonder why we think they’re going from dumb to dumber.

Don’t they realise when they honour the monkey they also honour his organ-grinder, Donald Rumsfeld. A man who used to visit Iraq on behalf of George Bush’s dad to flog Saddam Hussein tracking satellites, helicopter gun-ships, germ-seed for anthrax, pumps for nuclear plants and the ingredients to make chemical weapons.

The calculating monster who made the lies and the illegal invasion possible, who turned a blind eye to the torture in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, who plots the next phase of US colonisation and who has been signing letters of condolence to the families of dead troops using a "mechanical device".

This is a cold, hard, killing machine who couldn’t be bothered to sign letters regretting the loss of another young American life, because he cared so little about their futile deaths.

If Rumsfeld and Bush feel so little about the fate of their own people in Iraq, imagine how little they care for the fate of those they claim to be liberating?

Bush as Man of the Year? Only if the Man is short for Maniac.

    Bravo!

  • Bush is just one indication of how bad things really are. You’d really be amazed if you saw what they call ’News’ here (in the US), apparently media control works half the time anyway - judging by the votes Bush got.

To get a better understanding of what’s going on I read & suggest: ’Twilight of the American Culture’ (Berman), ’The New Nuclear Danger’ (Caldicott), anything political by Chomsky, Zinn, Moyers or Vidal.

    Pray for the world.

    • Ref. MANiac OF The Year,
I am amused with poor deceived BORN AGAINS, FUNDAMENTALISTS and people who voted for
      G. W. Bush in the elections of 2000 and 2004.
Oh Yes, GOD is using him all right not for the good of the U. S. but for the facilitation of the
down fall and destruction of our country and the WORLD.
The entire Bush family is being used by GOD to bring us to the final chapter —our DEMISE.
      May GOD help us.

    • You phony religious extremists must be crazy. I blame not the creation for this, but the evolution:
the average American male is born with four kidneys - that’s really good news for the transplant
      industry!
Bush has killed 152 human beings during his reign as govenor of Texas!

Texas should be circum fenced and declared as a prison!

  • from the USA (a once great nation)

I can only speak for myself and say I’m truly sorry.

    Very good article, BTW

    Peace

    • Although an excellent commentary, I must add a correction. Bush is NOT a "MAN" of the Year, but the "PERSON" of the Year. Any resemblance to a real man is purely coincidental. This was Time Magazine’s lead-in:

      Person of the Year
For sticking to his guns (literally and figuratively), for reshaping the rules of politics to fit his ten-gallon-hat style of leadership and for setting the global agenda whether the world likes it or not, Bush is Time’s Person of the Year.

See? Even the ass-kissing US media cannot bring themselves to call him a "MAN"!

    • "from the USA (a once great nation)"

Every Great Nation Starts with the Genocide of over 10 Million Indigenous Natives...Right?

  • It has become obvious even to life long republicans that G.W.Bush is a liar and a user of people to acheave by any means [legal or not] his twisted view of what the world should be.

Quote, G.W.BUSH, " THE WORLD UNDER MY RULE WILL BE A SAFER PLACE ", how very EMPEROR like are those words?

George W.Bush in my opinion is a scarey LITTLE man and the United States as well as the rest of the world would be well rid of him.

That may take four more years of God only knows what but in the end he will go away, AMEN !

    • I think you may be a little overly optimistic.
4 more years will give the creepy little maniac and his cabal of war hawks and arms merchants just enough time to solidify the presidential democracy they so desperately want.
If they weren’t so confident in their ability to steal the 2004 election, I guarantee there would have been another terrorist attack on the eve of the election, so as to suspend that same election. The legislation is in place for such action to transpire.
I fear that War Incorporated won’t be going anywhere. Not in 4 years and not in 40.

  • As an American that is as sick of Bush as the rest of the world. I would like many to know that many of us here don’t think he will be around much longer. He will probably have to go into one of his bunkers when enough of the idiots that voted for him and think of him as a God realize they have been fooled, and demand a regime change here in America. Many are finding out that it has been the Israeli/Zionist folks like Perle and Feith that have infiltrated our government, and allowed a stupid excuse for a man to use US kids as cannon fodder for their aims at controlling the world. But soon we will have to endure what’s coming to us. Brought about by the union of Russia, China, Cuba, Iran, Brazil, and Venezuela to put a stop to US Imperialism. Our country is about to go down, and go down hard. And we have brought it on ourselves. And many will feel that we deserve what is coming to us. My fear is that the lunatics running the asylum will resort to nuclear weapons. This is almost a certainty. God help us all, although we don’t deserve it. I can only say that I as an American that treasures what our Founding Fathers intended apologize to those that have died and suffered for our hubris.

    • I’m tired of him as well ...... Have we as a nation been so evil as to deserve this rot?

    • Hey whats a good place to go to escape the coming destruction? Is Europe safe? maybe south america?

    • Don’s blame the American people. We did not vote for this guy. They are re-counting the votes in Ohio as we speak and it appears that there was enough cheating going on to change the outcome of the race. Unfortunately, the US media is silent about this. Maybe a couple of well-placed articles in the British, German, or Italian papers might raise the profile of this recount. See for yourself...

    • I may add to my comments regarding the Person of the Year.... Every American, like You, who will admit to the mistakes America has made, all of you, should be voted Men of the Year. While I as a Canadian, respect the office of President, the person that occupies that office must earn respect...it doesn’t happen by osmosis. I have no respect for your government at all, and as ours caves in to the Shrub’s desires, no respect for my government any more. You are right, something terrible will happen soon, and we in North America will be blown back into the Ice Age. Merry Christmas to all. It may yet be a total white(out) Christmas.

    • I also as an American regret the insane actions of our President. My advise to Mom’s. Dad.s, Sons, Daughters, Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents to speak out loud before they force your family member to serve in the Iraqi meat gringer and be killed or maimed forever. To the people of Iraq...I am so sorry for what our country has done to yours.

    • The election was a fraud. We didn’t elect this guy. He was a usurper in 2000 and continues today, but not for much longer. I believe he and his entire corrupt administration are going DOWN.

  • Being an American I can only shout out, "Right On Brother!" I would like to point out the slowly growing furor over the way the votes in America were counted (mis-counted) in November. Not all Americans love "W."

  • As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
     H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956) ’

  • It is all fine and well to read about condemnation from Americans regarding their president. BUT, in light of the abuses of the citizenry of the world - what are they going to do about it? All talk (typing) and no action is not going to relieve us of the problem.

    • i agree that there is only talk ... before the election, i and many had maintained that the fix was in and we had best head to the streets in mass ... not to the polls ... even the wimpy left has no courage to do what was done in Ukraine ... however, we have to remember the people of Ukraine had a candidate that called them to the streets to stay ... everytime he addressed them he said, you must stay until we get the (re vote)? ... no one with any name recognition has asked for anything more than rally’s ... but after a rally you go home and nothing happens ... i am talking and am blue in the face ... not giving up .... american citizens we must go to the streets in mass and stay there .... we cannot allow this usurper to be corinated again. ... once in the streets, set up tents and begin to organize for our food and warmth and staying power ... power to the people rests not in rally’s but in the staying power of the people

    • I totally agree; we as citizens of the U.S. that are against BushCo. need to get out in the streets and stay there, like in Ukraine. But with the ’caging’ of protesters against Bush, I wouldn’t be surprised if the U.S. gov’t would use the military on its own citizens in a situation like that.

  • Yea! Thank you for putting it out there ’straight up’!!! I and a whole lot of other real Americans think the man is a piece of .....well, you know what. I suppose I could type it in French, but I think you all know what I mean. The man is a murderer plain and simple. Both of them are. No, ALL of them are! Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Rice, Feith, Wolfowitz and the rest. They belong in prison, not in office. Preferably either Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib so they could be subjected to a bit of their own medicine. I would defintely watch TV then. I don’t now because it’s all disinformation and pure fake American (yes, there are lots of those out there too) crap. Their mentality is beyond stupid and ignorant, but they don’t know it obviously because they ARE so stupid and ignorant! To put this man back in office should also be a crime. I have a hard time believing he really ’won’ anyway. Highly doubtful....and as sneaky as he and his minions are, don’t put it past them. The sooner they are unmasked for what they really are and put away, the better. Thanks again - A REAL American Citizen. IMPEACH THE WHOLE BUSH ADMIN. NOW!!!!!

  • The Criminal classes are all finished anyways. The well kept secret facts of an Extraterrestrial presence in our world, when known to the mass of the people, will forever end the authority of the nuclear war criminals, and their puppet stooges in political office.

  • Please do not include Viktor Yushchenko as one of the "heroes". He is completely supported by the same people that brought us George Bush through the manipulation of the media and the voting process. As for the sympathy which he has been getting since his "poisoning". All that needs to be said is that he is going to go to Israel for "treatment". Why Israel, because it costs less? I don’t think so, he is probably a very wealthy man and would have access to the best plastic surgeons in the US or Western Europe. Smells very fishy to me.

    • Millions of American dollars were spent on Ukraine’s exit polls, etc. Yuschenko is not what he appears. I agree with you.

  • Unfortunately even though half of the Americans voted against BUSH his unfortunate image reflects on all Americans. I am sure that most Americans in themselves are good people but you are going to have a tough time convincing the rest of the people in the world that this is the case. I for one will never subscribe to TIME magazine ever again - they just indicated to me that they support all that is undesireable in this World. JKB Adelaide Australia.

  • From a Soon-to-be-Former Resident of the US.

Superb article. Please, do not blame the Americans for the utter stupidity of our biased media. Yes, some individuals have been taken in by the propaganda, Yanks and non-Yanks alike. I was startled to hear a European friend comment that he "supports the man, not his policies". This isn’t a sporting match, everyone. People are dying by the thousands so that someone’s team can win. Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian, Constitutional... it doesn’t matter. We’re all human beings, and I hope with consciences somewhere deep down. Please, consider the consequences before you select someone like this for your "Man of the Year" again. I know I didn’t choose him.

  • Have you ever stopped to think that ....

    No, apparently not.

  • Yes, the Time award is not an award for morality- it’s for being newsworthy... and you have to admit, almost every (bad) news story in the world trickles back to being his fault...

  • Hear, hear!!!!! I’m an American and am ashamed that Bush was named Man of the Year when there are so many more people who actually deserve the recognition. Time needs to rethink their criteria for the "Man of the Year".

  • GREAT ARTICLE, BRIAN! AS A U.S. CITIZEN, I’M JUST AS APPALLED AT THE BUSH "VICTORY" IN LAST MONTH’S ELECTIONS AS ALMOST ALL OTHER PEOPLE WORLDWIDE.

IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT TIME MAGAZINE HASN’T CHANGED ITS STRIPES - HAVING AWARDED THE SAME AWARD TO ADOLF HITLER AND JOSEPH STALIN BACK-TO-BACK IN 1938 AND 1939, RESPECTIVELY. OH, YES, G.W. BUSH IS RIGHT IN THEIR COMPANY, EXCEPT THAT HE IS THE IDIOTIC PUPPET OF THE ZIONIST WARMONGERS, WHO WILL STOP AT NOTHING - EVEN GENOCIDE AND WORLD WAR - TO OBTAIN TOTAL POWER.

    EILEEN K. - USA

  • Personaly I think Bush scares me more than any thing. You never know what he is going to do next. Some people don’t want to know the truth but, it is going to slap them in the face when all of our allies hate us.

  • The US press is deplorable, and the Orwellian overtones of the current culture is truly surreal. I am dumbstruck not only when I watch the nightly network news but also news journals like Meet the Press. The censorship surrounding the elephant in the room (US foreign policy arm in arm with Israel, overt Zionist propaganda and control in Washington) is staggering. The US will reap what it has sown, but I only hope the instigator (Israel, as usual throughout history) of the precipice we now find ourselves peering over will be an equal recipient of the ensuing calamity it has caused.

  • I agree entirely; when one thinks of the stated objectives of the americans and the actions that they perform, there is a sharp dichotomy between the two. In other words, there is a great difference between their pronouncements and their actions when the two are juxtaposed. Maybe the opinions of the other people in the world don’t matter. And President Bush had the gall while addressing a speech sometime ago to pose the rhetorical question, "why do they hate americans so?" "they hate us because we love freedom, etc." Absolute nonsense.

One wonders why the american people, that is the ones who voted blue, in particular, don’t call the president to account. There appears to be an attack on the constitution by these neocon folk in the whitehouse, but cowering isn’t going to help the situation; it is only going to make it worse. If you went to the doctor and discovered you were afflicted by a cancer of some sort; ignoring it isn’t going to make it improve. We can only hope that somehow, reason will reassert itself over paranoia.

    • Answer: The Democrats are content to not make waves as they are feeding at the public trough, they are all on the same bribe list, they wouldn’t make any changes if they could. We in reality have a one party system like the old Soviet Union.

  • Mr. Reade: When are you brits going to realize this is the start of the great religious war of the 21st century and Britian is already lost. I expect you will be muslim or in active war there in less than five years. In America we have seen the obivious. Soon the Muslims will have nukes etc. and we all know they will use them to enforce their views. Islam cannot exist with Western Civilization. Therefore, we have to either reform Islam or destroy it. We cannot live with it as it stands now. Also, we are not going to rescue you this time like we had to do your grandfathers. You don’t deserve our help.

  • As a suggestion to the american people, I would urge them to fight back in ways that wouldn’t get them in any trouble. e.g. all media who are in bed with the neocon agenda, stop supporting them immediately. Why continually pay for tv programming that does not recognize the voice of the people? Does it make sense to continually subscribe to a media house that is clearly giving you a six for a nine? Use your hard earned money for something more benficial.

They need to identify all the media houses that are pro Republican and sever all ties with them, even if it means a complete separation from all of the tv stations in america. You can still receive the propaganda on radio; and it wouldn’t cost you a penny.

When I did a jury stint some years ago, I remember the judge addressing the jury saying that if you caught a witness in one lie, you are free to disregard everything that the witness has said as either lies or half-truths. In which case the witness loses his or her credibility.

Since Bush and his administration have been caught in a stream of lies, I do not accept anything that they say anymore unless it is backed up by several other reliable persons. I think that we need more than ever to identify the enemy and treat him accordingly.

  • Hopefully he will be impeached, hoisted by his own petard, it could happen as more crimes are reluctantly revealed. Just today, email about a secret Exectutive Order was released mentioning, 11 times that torture was ordered. These crimes keep trickling out by apalled insiders and may become a river of information. It happened to Nixon and, tho more difficult, could happen again. The entire regime must go. Keep up hope and a sense of humor.

The President, the First Lady and Dick Cheney are flying on Air Force One.

George looks at Laura, giggles and says, You know, I could throw a $1,000.00 bill out the window right now and make somebody very happy."

Laura shrugs her shoulders and says, "Well, I could throw ten $100.00 bills out the window and make ten people very happy."

Cheney says, "Of course then, I could throw one hundred $10.00 bills out the window and make a hundred people very happy."

The pilot rolls his eyes, looks at all of them and says to his co-pilot, "Such big shots back there..... hell, I could throw all three of them out the window and make at least 56 million Americans and countless others around the world very, very happy."

  • Bush and his Boys clearly stole yet another election. And I don’t know how to get people to acknowledge it. The American people are being held hostage by a lunatic coup and most of them don’t even realize it.

If anyone has any ideas on how we make them aware, please let me know.

An American Howling in the Wilderness

  • Sad Times my Friends! All the fuss about a Fraud Ukrainian Election. The Monkey wasn’t re-elected in the US. People turned out in DROVES to Vote him out of Office. Touch Screen Voting Machines (blackboxvoting.org) is Election FRAUD. In one Ohio County a lone there were 93,000 more votes then there were VOTERS. The only election the extra 93,000 votes were in was the Presidential. The FRAUD was widespread. The Troops are Exhausted! Now the Real Scary Part. There will be a DRAFT. In order for the US to accept a DRAFT, this THUG Administration needs Something WORSE THAN 911. If you have checked on Whom was responsible for 911 YOU will know it’s coming from these Treason es Thugs.

  • I do believe that Donal Rumsfeld is spelled backwards. It should be Ronald Dumsfeld!

  • I’m an American and live in the U.S. and truly wish such an article could be published here.

But it seems no one is really interested in the truth . . . at least not our media.

    Excellent insight.

  • well I some how found this page, article and following comments. Sounds like the preacher is preaching to true believers.
Not a single nuanced diagreement with the writer’s premise that President Bush is only bushwhacking the planet in the name of
colonialism and imperialism. Natural Law means that an individual or a country has the right to defend itself. Americans are trying to do that. It looks goofy to Europeans. But the continent has had great difficulty in preventing any major problems. wwI, wwII, antisemitism,
involvement in Vietnam. North africa debacle. And How about not being able to integrate immigrants. There are nearly no north african
elected officials in France or most of W. Europe. and this situation will end up like Theo Van Gogh. European civil war is just a natural outcome. Well it is when we deny natural law

    • Don’t start me about van Gogh ... he’s just a part of the bigger scheme!
Europe is being ’used’ just like the US and others. Ask yourself, who benefits from it?!
Van Gogh was killed ... who benefits form it? Dutch government, European Government and even US Government. Why?
Most of us are afraid now, because of terroristic assaults (well we’re supposed to be anyway) and we want the government to take control so we (the sheep) don’t have to worry. Which means the police and justice-system get more laws on their side. Just like we’ve already accepted (as a result of the P. Foruyn murder) that must have an id on us at ALL times ... if not, we can be charged with 2200 euro’s (the first time)

For crying out loud ... for not having an id on us???

Oh, it works well in the Netherlands (they are all subdued - sheeplike), we’ve got to implement those rules in the whole of Europe as well. Ah see says the US government ... see, we implemened rules like those after 9/11, we did right, cause they do it too!

Who gains from that i ask you?

Do you think that holds of terrorists? That won’t scare any terrorist (if there were real moslim terrorists at all i say)! Just like the french police have exercisedrills on airports, to make us feel save ... and losing ammo and weapons ... yeah right (guess what those are gonna be used for!).

Nah don’t talk about the hardship the americans have had, don’t talk about the ones they (or all of us) are having now. It’s the politicians, mediatycoons and royals who benefit, it’s them who are to blame for it all because they have a hand in it ... ALL!

DON’T JUST TALK ... DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT ... MARCH THE STREETS ... PUT THE PRESSURE ON YOUR OWN POLITICIANS!

  • I don’t believe for a second that bu$h the idiot won the election or the popular vote. this walking piece of crap belongs in prison. I feel sorry for amerika and the world.

  • When TIME Magazine named President Bush “Person of The Year,” I promptly cancelled my subscription.

TIME defended it’s decision saying “despite the highs and lows” Bush influenced the course of human events more than any other. TIME failed to mention that Bush and his GOP minions pulled every political dirty trick during the presidential campaign, including “fixing” computer voting machines to disenfranchise Democratic voters. And, TIME shamelessly failed to hold Bush to account for his failures. Most regrettable , TIME did not acknowledge that fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, friends, and children caught up in Bush’s avoidable war have been killed needlessly. Many will face a lifetime of suffering from grievous wounds. And for what?

I believe it’s time for Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, and other progressive parties to come together and make Bush, and his corporate supporters accountable by jointly launching a National Boycott. After all, over 50 million people did not vote for Bush. Imagine what 50 million people could do by boycotting those corporations that keep Bush’s corrupt regime in office.

The names of CEO’s and executives of corporations who backed Bush are a matter of public record. Much of this information is already listed on the Internet: ( http://www.opensecrets.org/ , http://www.buyblue.org/current_campaign.html , http://www.choosetheblue.com/main.php . The website address for the proposed boycott has just been registered as follows, http://www.bushpayback.com . (Thanks to buzzflash.com http://www.buzzflash.com/ )

Boycotting the products and services of these corporations could bring about positive changes. Especially important are the corporate sponsors on FOX, or in newspapers owned by Rupert Murdock, or radio broadcasts on Clear Channel stations. These sponsors need to be forcefully reminded that news is not just opinion or entertainment. For example, Bill O’ Reilly is not entitled to use the public airways, under a public license, to present his personal opinions as facts.

People have the power to take back our government from corrupt politicians and penalize the corporations that corrupt them. A National Boycott could be an important first step toward correcting our failed elections system, and compel government to act in behalf of the public interest, and not in the interest of their corporate benefactors..

    Harold, Marblehead, MA

  • 101% Correct, Bush is abysmal....... Just take a look at rense.com for more articles of a corrupt & evil Bush Government.

    • As an American student of poltical science trust me when I say many of us saw this comming but, do to the darker side of democrcay, could do very little about it. Look deeper into the social and historical meaning of this mass media award. Prevent yourself from imagining some contrived well-planned conspiracy by America’s elite and the future will become abundantly clear.

  • Dera Brian,

Thank you so much for expressing so many people’s sentiments. I was "shocked and awed" to hear that Bush received that title.

It appears that from your historical look at former "Man Of The Year" awardees, Bush fits right in.

I actually laughed out loud about the comment on Bush not wanting to negotiate with himself in public and the "burger" comment. Of course, it sounded just like Bush. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for him if he wasn’t responsible for the loss of so many lives on both sides of the war, and the victims of 9-11. Maniac of the year is far more appropriate. Great Article!

  • MANiac of the year? I LOVE IT! I am one of the many unappreciated Americans who loath Bush, and believe he is the face of evil. Instead of moving forward, the U.S. is regressing. The man is truly scary, and to think he is in the Oval office? It’s not pleasant to live in a country with a delusional maniac in charge.

    • That visit followed a Sept. 18, trip, when Chirac visited the New York site. He said then: ``Today it is New York. Tomorrow it may be Paris, Berlin or London.’’

  • he should be doing time

  • I’m with ya, Bellaciao. Maniac indeed. I did not vote for him, and I’m continuously amazed at how many people did. I’m just reading up on his new attack on our Social Security system now. I’m angry that so many Americans were willing to elect this right-wing corporate jerk to power twice. I’m only 29, and I fear what the future holds with George Bush at the helm. I guess I can now dismiss Time magazine as worthless junk.
