BROOK PARK, Ohio (AP) - The 14 Marines killed in Iraq on Wednesday by a roadside bomb were members of the same Ohio-based battalion that lost six Marines two days earlier, a Marine Corps spokesman said.

The Marines were members of the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines based in this Cleveland suburb, according to Gunnery Sgt. Brad R. Lauer, public affairs chief with the unit.

The local unit to which the 14 Marines were assigned wasn’t disclosed. The battalion has units in Brook Park, which lost six Marines on Monday, and in Columbus and Akron in Ohio, Moundsville, W.Va., and Buffalo, N.Y.

The Marines, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), were killed early Wednesday when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device, the military said. Another Marine was wounded in the attack, which happened outside Haditha, about 140 miles northwest of Baghdad.

The first six died northwest of Baghdad while on sniper duty on Monday.

The battalion was activated in January and went to Iraq in March. Before this week’s deaths, the unit’s Web site listed 25 of its Marines who have been killed this year.

  • This Battalion has already lost 20 this month. In Ohio the still voted for the GOP in Congressional race, so why bother they must like it.

We hope those brave Iraqi freedom fighters get more effective every day.

    • Brook,
Thanks, your views are as worthless as the presidents. Our soldiers are there because they were ordered to go there....most do not agree with Dubya’s cause. This is far more than they signed on for....

Some real news from a military family viewpoint, please educate yourself.

Most military families are not for this war, nor do they hope the "Freedom fighters" get more effective in killing our loved ones.....we think they are more than effective enough.

An immediate pull out is in order.

Are you aware that some families are actually afraid to speak out against this war....Bush might have them taken out back in the chaos of a war zone and put a bullet in their loved ones head. He certainly has no problem ordering deaths, now does he? Nor would he lose a wink of sleep over the matter.....

    • Just read an account of a young recruit who decided to "quit" the military (Harper’s mag. july) because he did not fit in. Only there a week he knew that he could not continue due to the fact that "the gung-ho rednecks which comprised most of the new recruits were all excited about getting to kill someone" their language was all about women (bitches) and killing the ragheads, and other repulsive behaviors that he was not expecting before he got there.

According to the young man he was horrified to find himself among a pack of young sociopaths who could not wait for the "ultimate thrill" of killing someone. And he knew he made a big mistake to join such a group of misfits.

He confirmed what I suspected all along that these young men who join the military are there to kill by choice which makes them nothing more than latent murders and psycopaths. Who can feel sorry for them? When I hear everyday about the 5 or 6 or 14 or 20 that got killed by the Iraqis, I think they are just getting what they deserve. They go over there to kill and when they get killed it is not sad, it is what they should have happen to them. Little murders who do it for a thrill and a few dollars.
