The Scottish Socialist Party, once heralded by many on the left as the most successful socialist experiment in recent times, is in the process of tearing itself apart after sacking its founder and leader Tommy Sheridan as the party’s convener. Officially he is now simply a “backbencher”.
Sheridan was recently dumped as leader by a 19 - 0 vote by the party’s executive committee apparently over his mishandling of allegations about sexual infidelity with a party (…)

Open letter to the Australian Labor Party : Troops out now!
20 November 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsJohn Howard’s Liberal-National Coalition government sent Australian troops to join the illegal US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. Until recently, Labor’s policy was to bring the troops home by Christmas. But after the election, and to the dismay of many, the ALP leadership seems to be retreating from this policy arguing, among other things, that it isn’t practical.
Abandoning the troops home call would signal a retreat from the biggest moral and political issue of our time.
We, the (…) -

The gay movement is the canary in the coalmine for the future of the Democratic Party. If party leaders move right and abandon basic fairness and equality, it is a strong signal that they will capitulate and surrender their other core principles too. This may lead to widespread disillusionment and the creation of a powerful third party that will shake-up American politics.
For the record, I have always been a proud Democrat and I still expect to die as one. I have loathed (…) -

WASHINGTON - Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack told Democratic leaders on Friday he may seek the party’s top job as the jockeying to replace chairman Terry McAuliffe intensified.
One is a long list of other Democrats interested in the job, including former Kerry rival Howard Dean (news - web sites) who began calling DNC members this week seeking support. The 400-plus DNC membership meets in February to select a replacement for McAuliffe, (…) -

1 November 2004 par (Open-Publishing)
Tens of thousands celebrated in the streets after socialist Tabare Vazquez declared victory in Uruguay’s presidential election, an historic first for the left in the South American country.
Vazquez greeted weeping, cheering followers after exit polls showed his coalition, which includes former guerrilla fighters, with more than 50 percent of votes cast.
"Celebrate Uruguayans, celebrate, for the victory is ours, thanks, many thanks," Vazquez told crowds gathered along Montevideo’s main (…) -
Kerry and Progressive Party Building

Peter Camejo was the first one I heard put it out, back in April: "Kerry will do what Bush wants to do better." In other words, Kerry and the Democrats are the greater evil, not the Republicans which, followed to its logical conclusion, means that Camejo hopes that Bush/Cheney will win re-election.
Since that time I’ve heard and seen others put forward this same point of view. There’s not a lot of them on the Left but they’re out there. The Counterpunch website seems to be a (…) -

These comments are addressed above all to those among you who follow Judaism, Christianity or Islam, but it might be useful for others to ponder on the points raised.
At the end of June, when I wrote on the subject of the "Misappropriation of Christianity (or of any other religion)", I ended with the advice "Above all, pray for guidance to our loving, compassionate and merciful God, who cannot be served with evil actions".
This has since become even more urgent, and (…) -

Ever hear the old story of the lady and the snake?
A lady finds a snake injured in the road. She takes it home, cares for it, helps it heal, and the two become friends. One day, the lady is in her garden with the snake, and the snake suddenly bites her in the throat. The lady lays dying and gasps, "Why did you bite me? I was your friend?" The snake replies, "Lady, you knew I was a snake when you picked me up."
This is a parable the Bush/Cheney campaign is (…) -
Reformist Social Democracy is No Longer on the Agenda
