The world would be a better and safer place if there was no Israeli state. For if there was no Israeli state, there would be no armed campaign against it and no armed campaign in defence of it.
I can understand perfectly well why Jews across Europe felt the need for a homeland state following the Second World War. No wonder they thought that the only way to ensure that there would never be another holocaust was to set up a state of their own and ensure its total security.
But the cost in basic human terms of that policy is simply too high.
Just say there was no Israeli state. Imagine if all the Jews and all the Arabs on the landmass that was once known as Palestine came together under an international chair to thrash out a new form of government, a power-sharing government that recognised the rights of Jews and Arabs to co-exist throughout the territory.
Of course such a solution would only be possible if the US were to sponsor it. And, at present, there is no possibility of the US deviating from its traditional position of total support for a total Israel. But why should the US continue to support the Israeli position with blind faith in perpetuity?
Surely, an American president could come along and recognise that it would be in the interest of his – or her - own people to achieve a solution of the Middle East question. Israel can try to pound Lebanon out of existence, but who believes that their bombs will reduce the enemy?
Is it not the basic lesson of oppression that the more you pile on the pressure the more determined you make the opposition? And as the Lebanon becomes an international disaster zone, will not another and more ruthless enemy not locate itself in some other neighbouring state.
Or does Israel believe that the Americans will allow them to bomb all around them forever?
Could the current Israeli madness possibly cause a change in world policy towards the Middle East, forcing others to the conclusion that a separate Israeli state for Jews is impossible to justify or sustain?
