Sen. Clinton says immediate withdrawal would be mistake

RYE BROOK, N.Y. — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq would be "a big mistake."

While professing "the greatest respect" for Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania, the ex-Marine who called for a troop pullout last week, Clinton said, "I think that would cause more problems for us in America."

On the other hand, she said, the administration’s pledge to stay in Iraq "until the job is done" amounts to giving the Iraqis "an open-ended invitation not to take care of themselves."

The right approach, Clinton suggested, would be for the U.S. to await Iraq’s Dec. 15 elections for a clue about how soon the Iraqis can take over.

"Until they vote for a government I don’t know that we will have adequate information about how prepared they are," she said. "Then we have to tell the new government, `We’re not going to be here forever, we are going to be withdrawing our young men and women and we expect you to start moving toward stability.’ ... They have to know we’re not going to be there forever."

"Right now Iraq is tottering on the balance," Clinton said. "It will matter to us if Iraq totally collapses into civil war, if it becomes a failed state the way Afghanistan was, where terrorists are free to basically set up camp and launch attacks against us."

Clinton, a Democrat who is running for re-election to the Senate and is viewed as a possible presidential candidate in 2008, managed a few swipes at President Bush while saying, "This is not to me a partisan political debate."

"I think we have to face up to the problems that we’re confronting because of poor decision making by the administration," the senator said. "But this is our president for the next three years. My view is we have to work together to fix these problems."

"None of us wants to see a failure in Iraq," she added. "That is too dangerous for America. So we have to try to make this as successful as possible, having already recognized the numerous mistakes that were made by the administration. We are where we are. Let’s try to make it as successful as we can. Let’s protect our young men and women, bring them home with honor as soon and as quickly as possible."

White House spokesman Ken Lisaius said Monday: "Reasonable people can disagree about the conduct of the war ... but members of Congress saw the same intelligence and reached the same conclusions about going into Iraq."

  • She’s a Republican Lite opportunist bitch! "Don’t upset the people that give us our money, or they won’t give us any more." She’s isn’t interested in the plight of the soldiers in Irag, not matter what she says; all she wants is political power, just like the rest. She cuts her coat to suit the wind, like most other politicians. Dump her, along with Bush and his cronies! Just remember, in Europe, the Democrats would be considered a right-wing party.

    • Yes, they all looked at the same doctored intelligence. They all approved the same strategy with hardly a word of protestation, they all jumped on the same war-mongering band-wagon with not even a whisper of criticism. They all, both Republicans and Democrats, still believe that the answers to all our problems, the cure to all of our woes is in an all powerful Federal Government which continues to grow exponentially no matter which party is in power. Both parties bow down to the same multi-nationals, both parties ’party’ with the same Globalist pimps, both parties practically preach the same foreign policy, both parties are making use of this ’War on Terror’ to circumvent our civil liberties, both parties offer only the same, sad old tired Keynesian methods of government deficit spending to control our economy, both parties have contributed enormously in weakening our manufacturing base every year, shamelessly selling out the American middle class without compunction & both parties have no problem in trashing the Constitution of the US when it suits them, such as passing, overwhelmingly I might add, the USA Patriot Act (Oct.25, 2001, the Senate vote was 98- 1, Senator Feingold of Wisconsin the only nay-sayer & the only Senator who probably read it in its entirety).
What more evidence do the American people need to have to understand that this country’s political system is in reality a one-party system?
Those Americans who think that a Hillary Clinton administration will be better than a Bush administration should be preparing themselves for deep disillusionment. Sen. Clinton exhibits the same arrogance, the same mendacity and the same lust for power that Bush has been demonstrating since he was governing Texas. The only difference is that she is far more clever than he and far more devious.
We as a people need to find better leaders for our democracy now, or else we will lose our freedom.
Having to choose between fork-tongued snakes and harpies from hell is a selection process made by prison wardens for their inmates. Whoever the inmates choose to represent them makes no difference to the prison warden, who breeds and nurtures snakes and harpies every day of his life. We need take this prison down or forever live a lie.

    • If the Democrats retake the congress and the White House the "War on Terror" will be expanded and there will be some kind of a draft. Mark my words. The Republicans and the Democrats have been playing "Good Cop/Bad Cop" with the American people for the past 60 years. But, they are all of one type and only serve the needs of the military/industrial complex.

    • Agreed, for MANY in BOTH of the major parties, money over a genuine concern for the welfare of the Citizens of a Constitutional Republic has been a priority.

As a result myself and many others refuse to uphold the doctrines of EITHER party and find ourdelves having to vote third party and working in every way we can OUTSIDE the rigged system for an honest change of direction from this crushing corporate fascism that many in both parties seem to endorse.(But I would vote for an INDIVIDUAL of ANY party that TRULY SHOWS they believe in living by the CONTRACT of the Constitution and BIll of Rights many of our families fought and died for).

Mark MY words if these rotten bastards try and push a DRAFT to start murdering our children for the sake of their dreams of OIL and EMPIRE, you are going to see mom and pop out in the STREETS and this country if it isn’t already going through hell it will be.

My own expectations are that the Bush/Cheney NeoCON Fascists are going to implement another "attack" to try and use as a propaganda tool to suck our young people into their killing machine, but MANY this time will not be fooled even if they kill hundreds of thousands this time. We know the Strausian game now that these Machiavellian MURDERERS use and while Bush may fool some of the citizens TOO MANY have woken up to the crimes of The Crime Family and understand the Hegelian staged theatre that may have worked in the PAST will not be working so well NOW.

What do we want. HONEST people in government, someone who can LEAD this great nation to PEACE and PROSPERITY, not leaders that would use the blood of our families and TRILLIONS from our treasury to enhance their own greedy bank accounts and delusions of Power.

    • You have to look at Democrat support for: a) the Patriot Act; and b) Bush going to war with Iraq in CONTEXT of the MANIPULATIVE STRATEGIES CREATED to give us an unprecedented sense of imminent danger to America.

The 9-11 tragedy, followed by the threat of Anthrax, gave Americans a feeling of total loss of control. Anything was possible, even in this country, if we did not anticipate the unthinkable and implement preventative measures to protect ourselves. We feared that a new and unfamiliar era had begun. [I remember thinking to myself on 9-11: “It’s the end of the world as we know it”.]

Then, the carefully devised ‘faulty’ intelligence about Iraq (which included forgeries, shutting out respectable opinions, and relying instead on false information from obviously shady characters), built on our already insecure psyche to do whatever it takes to eliminate devastating threats. I had faith in Colin Powell---he would never lie to us. The pictures the neocons painted of mushroom clouds and weapons of MASS DESTRUCTION were very effective….afterall, the terrorists had pulled off something as shocking as 911. And Bush’s battle cry, “We will get them dead or alive” made us think he was sincere about protecting American interests.

In 2001, no one imagined that 911 would intentionally be allowed to happen (or be created to happen) by this administration in order to get unopposed support for the neocon agenda. Most naively thought the criminality and greed involved in such a highly complex, manipulative conspiracy would not and could not be pulled off in a democracy like the USA. We were carefully and craftily maneuvered. [I think that is why Bush often had a smirk on his face.]

Two words can explain this incredibly intricate and so far success plan: Karl Rove.

  • I despise the Bush/Cheney cabal as much or PROBABLY MORE than most people. But I do think Hillary speaks the truth.

We are in a mess. However we deceitfully and illegally got there, we have to try to get out of it the best way possible—looking at the long term consequences....looking at the big picture. We are going to get out; it is just a matter of how to do it without adding more problems to our security (and reputation).

Unlike many Democrats, Hillary has the ability to communicate ideas in an understandable and logical manner. I believe she sincerely has America’s best interests at heart, in contrast to the disgusting, greedy, selfish Repugs. Aside from her comment about being stuck with Bush for 3 more years, I think we need to support her as someone who has a good chance of repairing damage to America. I think severe criticism of Hillary is counterproductive to our interests.

There is no ideal politician. You have to choose the best possible alternative that has the ability and desire to succeed in turning things around and putting Americans first. Third party candidates are just not a viable alternative in this country at this time.

    • You’ve GOT to be kidding. Hillary will NEVER get my vote.

I know the NWO crowd already has selected here to carry on the same Totalitarian Fascist Agenda from the opposite Hegelian angle (of Bush) which is using SEGMENTS of the left (the Schumers, Liebermans, Clintons) to carry ou the gun grabbing side of the equation where they attempt to disarm the public Like Germany was disarmed before Hitler’s rise.

You see to ME it doesn’t matter whether we have a son- of- a- Bush pushing totalitarianism from the Fascist side or whether we have totalitarianism from the Communist side (no offense to communist readers it’s just not MY thing)

I would MUCH rather see a honorable individual IMO like Wisconsin’s Feingold or someone with some integrity like Kucinich instead of a NWO stooge (IMO) like Hillary. Sorry. NO THANKS!

    • Reply to 65.3: Then you would rather be an inmate than a free man. Your choice. There is nothing physically impossible in having an alternative to this Punch & Judy show our fraudulent ’two-party’ system has been since WWII. It is merely a matter of will. You are telling me that the American people do not have the resources, nor the ability to form other political parties. This is a ridiculous statement, a statement that can only be uttered by one who is in power, or one who is paid by those in power, a lackey. We have been listening to lackeys like yourself for too many years, telling us that we are foolhardy in thinking that voting for an alternative to this circus will change things. We are the fools when we pay attention to lackeys, whose interests are definitely not ours, masquerading as wisemen.

To paraphrase an old saying from the Seventies, if we can put a man on the moon, we can surely create viable political alternatives to the same, old, greedy, tribe of liars and parasites that our political class has become. A vote for either party is a guarantee that no fundamental change will occur in either US foreign or domestic policy. The Punch & Judy show can only furnish us with ’left’ and ’right’ spins on the truth, but never the real thing. That’s the whole purpose of this political circus, to confuse the public with spin after spin, sophistry running amuck, keeping our eyes focused on bullshit instead of the truth. Only by focusing on how our world really works, the truth, can we create pragmatic solutions to our problems. Our political class do not desire pragmatic solutions where they gain very little or nothing at all. Their interests are most definitely not ours.

And as far as our reputation is concerned, forget it. Our reputation is that of a huge, unthinking thug that terrorizes and kills far more innocents than the terrorists it is trying to eliminate. We are reaping, and will continue to reap, a very long, bitter harvest of hatred for the violence we have sown. Continuing to occupy and terrorize an innocent country is not a moral alternative for a country that advertises itself to the world as the ’Beacon of Liberty’. You yourself write that this invasion was illegal, so how can this continuous occupation be considered legal? It is this kind of schizophrenic reasoning that got our country in this mess in the first place.

The world no longer looks up to the US as a world leader with any kind of moral authority, people in the world have a hard time trusting a military machine that does far more damage than good. If you want the US to recover this lost moral reputation then the only real alternative we have involves two actions: 1] Immediate and complete withdrawal of all troops, both US and coalition forces, 2] That the political leaders who brought us into this debacle be indicted, tried, convicted and sentenced for treason.
Lying, blatant disregard for the truth, doctoring intelligence, outing CIA agents & destroying careers of officials who only have the public’s interests at heart, all of these actions taken for the sake of waging a war of aggression while pretending to wage a war based on self-defense, is treason to any sane mind.

  • (quoting Hillary) "I think we have to face up to the problems that we’re confronting because of poor decision making by the administration," the senator said.

I would say that she is part of that same administration who served up this fiasco to the USA. She gave over Congressional power by voting for the president’s war powers. IDIOTS! DON’T THEY EVER LEARN. The United States usually manages to get somebody to throw a sucker punch and, whoopee, we can go to war. Name me one war that did not have lies to the American people involved in starting it?

Also when you look at the record of legislation passed under Bill Clinton, it reads like a Republican wish list. I will NEVER vote for Hillary. I will not be voting for any Democrat who supports staying in Iraq until it is "stable" and who favors continuing globalization and privatization. The Democrats are simply the left wing of the corporate money party that always manages to stay in power regardless of which political party prevails. Name me one movement for social good which was led by corporations?

    • You know I think what bothers me more about Hillary (and Bill) and G.W is what I can only describe as what some authors have called "The Crime Family" connections. Hillary IMO definately has that image as does Bush Jr.

When one reads a book such as "The Secret Life of Bill Clinton" by author Ambrose Evans Pritchard and is introduced to the world of drug running and other crime coming through Mena Arkansas when Clinton was governor and all of the nasty deaths and violence it makes one not want to be connected at all with any politicians connected with violent things like that. And the more one takes the time to really research and learn the more one finds there is a HUGE Clinton and BUsh Jr. body count of all sorts of political and personal enemies that wound up dead that only a ’coincidence theorist’ of the most dense nature would fail to recognize the Crime Family links.

I will just state this as MY opinion, but I really believe if one takes the time to look, one will find there is an IMMENSE CRIME NETWORK that reaches all the way from corporate boardrooms across the world and into even the highest reaches of the U.S. government. The violent crimes IMO are getting more and more blatant almost like those who enact them don’t really even seem to care if some citizens know. It’s kind of like a Machiavellian show of ’strength’. It seems to me like a kind of flaunting, these people really seem to believe that they can get away with ANYTHING and nobody can stop them.

  • Hillary,

You are military families worst nightmare. You’ll get no support from us.
