Edito Wars and conflicts International USA

by Cindy Sheehan

This past weekend was the two year anniversary of the beginning of ’shock and awe’ of the US Government’s aggression in Iraq. If all you did was watch CNN, FOX News, or MSNBC, you would never know.

There were protests all across our nation. CNN called the over 800 protest events ’barely a ripple’. I spoke at a protest in Fayetteville, North Carolina where there were right around 4000 people. 4000 people full of energy and committed to the task of peace and justice and reclaiming our country from the socio-pathic maniacs who are in power right now.

So what were the hypocrites in DC doing while much of the country was working for peace either at rallies, marches, or candlelight vigils? They were conducting an emergency smokescreen session in Congress to draft legislation for one woman: Terry Schiavo. Terry’s story is tragic and her family has suffered unbearable pain for many years with her persistent vegetative state. I feel so much compassion for her mother who has had to watch her daughter slowly waste away. My heart truly breaks for everyone in Terry Schiavo’s family.

However, I have one question for Congress and for George ("When in doubt it is always better to err on the side of life", Arizona, March 22, 2005) Bush, though: Why does Terry Schiavo deserve to live more than my son, Spc. Casey Austin Sheehan? Casey was misused and abused by his Commander-in-Chief and executive branch that boldly lied to the American public and the less gullible citizens of other countries about the reasons for the invasion of Iraq.

Casey was sent to Iraq to be killed by the same pack of cowards and murderers who so valiantly and tirelessly fought for the right for Ms. Schiavo to live! The green light for Casey’s murder was given by a Congress who expediently abrogated their constitutional rights to a president whose foreign policies are not based on reality or even loosely based on any kind of Christian moral values. Someone needs to give Congress basic lessons on the Constitution: Declaring War---YES; Meddling in a family’s private tragedy---NO!!

As far as I am concerned, the amazing hypocrites in our Government are not making up for killing thousands of innocent Americans and Iraqis by passing emergency legislation to save one life. Every member of Bush’s executive branch (past and present) and every member of Congress who voted to give George the authority to invade Iraq have innocent blood on their hands. For the next State of the Union address, maybe the hypocrites in Congress should shamefacedly display blood soaked hands, instead of proudly wriggling fingers stained with ink to symbolize sham Iraqi elections.

From Bush signing into Texas law The Futile Care Bill, the culture of the death penalty in Texas (and around our nation), proposed cuts in Medicaid, laws restricting medical malpractice lawsuits and Chapter 7 bankruptcy for families who have incurred huge medical bills, this shameful Congress should go back on vacation and go back to their home districts and look for people who have been devastated by the illegal occupation of Iraq.

Mr. Tom ("We should investigate every avenue before we take the life of a living human being") DeLay should be outraged for the soldiers who have been murdered for the cowardice of he and his colleagues. He should shed real tears for the soldiers’ families whose lives have been destroyed by their murders. DeLay should search for a homeless Iraq Vet and pass legislation to find him a job and an apartment. Mr. Tom (who cried over Ms. Schiavo’s hunger pains). DeLay should go to Walter Reed hospital and find one of our kids who has been horribly maimed by the betrayal of his government and pass legislation to pay for his meals. After 3 months, the wounded soldier has to pay for his meals with his own money. Maybe Mr. Tom (Crocodile Tears) DeLay should find a soldier who has returned from this abomination of a war who is suffering from PTSD and pass a law to get him the help he needs before the soldier’s dad finds him hanging by a garden hose in the basement.

Maybe if Tom DeLay and the rest of the members of Congress who voted for the Terry Schiavo Emergency Relief Act and who voted to give George Bush the authority to go to war and who voted to give George Bush more money to waste in Iraq, sought out and talked to us citizens whose lives have been tragically impaired by the invasion/occupation of Iraq and could hear our stories, they might rush back to DC to vote to rip the authority out of the president’s hands and end the immoral occupation of Iraq. One thing this ’Circus of Hypocrisy’ has shown me is that Congress can accomplish something when it sets its mind to it. Now it is time to accomplish something important and I am not talking about steroids use in baseball.

I have a great idea!! Although Mr. Tom (Politician Protection Act: HB 913) DeLay is not my Congressman (hmmm don’t think he’s Terry Schiavo’s Congressman, either) maybe I should ask him to introduce the Soldiers Put in Harm’s Way for Lies and Betrayals Emergency Relief Act and force the amazing hypocrites to bring our troops home, now!!

Love and Peace!!!

  • right on Cindy! It is hard to believe the House rushed to Washington DC for this important legislation and now they off again...The next meeting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on April 5, 2005.

"maybe I should ask him to introduce the Soldiers Put in Harm’s Way for Lies and Betrayals Emergency Relief Act and force the amazing hypocrites to bring our troops home, now!!"

We should definately not let them get away with this. There have been hearings requested on bringing the troops home, the missing 9 billion, the 52 warnings before 9/11...all have been ignored for steroids hearings and Terri. Congress is embarrassing themselves and our country.

  • I’ve commented on Ms. Sheehan’s plight before and I, frankly, do not see the connection between her and Shivo’s case. It is just an emotional equating/venting.

Only after her son Casey’s death did she see the lies for the war.

And, again, I would like to point out that prior to her son’s death, she believed the lies to be the truth and that, had her son returned alive, she would continue to see these lies as truth. Until, that transition point in understanding is not comprehended, their cause it lost — because you will not be able to trigger this viewpoint in the public.

Rallies such as these are totally ineffecutal towards policy changes.

With the U.S. spending $1.5 billion on building its embassy alone and announced plans for 14 military bases in Iraq, this war is just the beginning. Come back and read my posting in another 20 years and see whether I am correct.

    • You are one heartless, politically inert SOB.

    • Dear above poster: In an attempt to inform you (so we will not have to read your misguided, uninformed posts again & again-we have mass media for that), let me 1st assure you that as a friend of Cindy Sheehan, she was extremely aware of this administrations lies, hypocracy, war crimes, environmental crimes, law crimes, economic crimes, constitutional crimes, special interest crimes & dictatorship-like rule (where all decisions are made secretly behind closed doors keeping the people in the dark), well before Casey’s death. When her son Casey went to Iraq she supported HIM & HIS wishes as any good parent would do. That does not in any way mean she believed in or supported this war or any of the myriad of reasons we have been given as to why we went to war(which Bush changes constantly as soon as each reason is proven untrue-no wonder the soldiers always ask why they are there!) The fact that on the 2 yr. anniversary of this war not one media outlet (all owned & bought by Bush supporters & contributors) mentioned or covered this milestone and more importantly the HEROES we have lost & those still fighting (who, by the way believe this war is based solely on lies & what we hear is not even close to what is truely going on there. They have all been given lengthy scripts from which to quote from when asked questions,if they deviate from that they can be tried as war criminals). If this war was on the up & up why the lies, the scripts??? No surprise there, as we, the public are not even allowed to see ANY pictures of the dead or maimed,no pics of the coffins, etc. When our HERO’S come home dead or maimed, they do so under the darkness of night & heavy security so no images could be captured! Why is this admin. hiding so much & going to such great lengths! Yet, they say they support the troops! By making them disappear?By supplying them w/ no body armour, uparmoured vehicles, very limited water & food, rationed weapons-3 bullets a day!!! The only support our HEROES have received has been from their families who have had to pay for their loved ones body armour, weapons, food, water etc."You go to war w/ the Army you have not the Army you may want!" NO-THEY GO TO WAR WITH THE ARMY THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN! There is something extremely wrong when steroids & our Gov’n. completely overstepping their bounds by interfering with a personal family matter (with 100’s of thousands of Terry’s out there-why her, why now?) when the President should be honoring our true HEROES. Every other war time President has done so, but he has his priorities!
AS FOR THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CINDY’S ’PLIGHT’ & THE SCHIAVO CASE,it is obvious- BOTH ISSUES ARE POLITICAL GAMES FOR POLITICAL GAIN THAT USE HUMAN LIFE AS THE GOVERNMENT’S PAWNS WHO ARE EXPENDABLE! Bush claims to be so very Christian! That he takes his orders from God! Who would God or Jesus bomb??? Instead of using valuable time to draw conclusions on people you don’t even know, you may wany to do some REAL research on the truth of what is really going on-I don’t mean flipping on FOX news. WARNING:Don’t be shocked when you find out that Bush has signed off on the Iran War, bombing to begin in June & the draft to begin before then. Any student who wishes to attend college or a university must fulfill military duty before they will be allowed to attend college. God Bless Cindy & us all as we need to be very informed & take action together before OUR COUNTRY that we all love, collapes. The parallels between the collapse of the wealthy, powerful Roman Empire and many other of the most powerful nations that have collapsed due to their own delusional self-confidence, arrogance & greed are frighteningly similar. Peace be to all, Stacy

    • God WILL bless Cindy and her brave son who lost his life along with hundreds of thousands of others in Bush’s illegal, immoral, misadventure.
Our prayers are with you Cindy.

  • Congressional leaders have insisted their only motivation in getting involved in the Terri Schiavo case was saving a life. But Americans aren’t buying that argument, a CBS News poll finds.

An overwhelming 82 percent of the public believes the Congress and President should stay out of the matter.

Just 13 percent of those polled think Congress intervened in the case out of concern for Schiavo, while 74 percent think it was all about politics. Of those polled, 66 percent said the tube should not be inserted compared to 27 percent who want it restored. The issue has generated strong feelings, with 78 percent of those polled — wheter for either side of the issue — saying they have strong feelings.

Public approval of Congress has suffered as a result; at 34 percent, it is the lowest it has been since 1997, dropping from 41 percent last month. Now at 43 percent, President Bush’s approval rating is also lower than it was a month ago.

  • let’s see if i have this right;
Cindy’s kid, Casey, joins the army [not a quilting bee, not the elvis costello fan club, not kiwanis, but the effing ARMY.] and gets killed [regrettably]. here is a note to the sane and those who aspire to sanity: Violent death is frequently a by-product of membership in an army [any army]
Now, if Cindy wanted to be sure her son would not die violently she should have objected [strenuously?] to his desire to join said army.
in which case he might have bought himself a nice japanese motorcycle, and gotten himself turned into road spam.
But, then, perhaps one of the reasons young Casey joined the army was to get away from his big mouthed, bullying, hyperthyroid, marginally coherent mother.
As cindy looks back over her life and reflects on the time and money and effort spent on raising young Casey, only to have him K.I.A. in Iraq, perhaps it will seem, in retrospect, that it would have made more sense to just abort him.
