Wars and conflicts Governments USA
George W. has recently stated that historians will eventually honor his invasion and subesequent occupation of Iraq. The basis of his claim is, or course, that "we took out a tyrany who threatened his neighbors and the world with weapons of mass destruction". Of course we know now that the statement is entirely false. Well, except for the "tyrant" part.
But what IS the real legacy of our actions? And will the textbooks and historical tomes of the future reveal the full extent of our "noble actions"?
Will they say:?
That we violated literally every one of the Geneva Accords: We bombed waterways, sewage systems, electric grids, oil and natural gas pipelines, hospitals, schools, agricultural areas, private homes and religious edifices! We also used oversized bombs, and smaller cluster bombs and phosphor weapons. We employed private contractors illegally who oversaw actual TORTURE of "people of interest", most of whom proved completely innocent..and we also "rendered" suspects to foreign countries for questioning, countries KNOWN to employ torture. Add to these pathetic and embarrassing facts, GUANTANAMO, where we held "enemby combatants" indefinately without recourse to council, and whom we often treated in severe fashion..akin to torture.
The legacy continues:
We devastated Iraq’s infrastructure, allowed weapons and ammunition warehouses to be ransacked..along with museums and other vital public buildings...without any interferance.
Over 4 million Iraqis, including many professionals (teachers, doctors and nurses, attorneys, etc) have fled the country. Another million or so reside in crude refugee camps inside Iraq! Orphans are everywhere, and cancer incidences are high..including those likely from depleted uranium dust.
Over 4000 US troops have perished in this futile effort to ’democratize’ the country, and approx. 30,000 soldiers have come home maimed and psychologically disturbed. Many of these poor souls will be denied VA help thanks to Bush policies of cost cutting...while simultaneously claiming "compasssion"!
Nobody knows the exact number of Iraqi citizens who’ve died at our "collateral" hands and/or from foreign fighters, bombs and starvation/disease. Most put the number at OVER 500,000..and growing!
The cost of the war, estimated at approximately 12 BILLION dollars per month, has ruined the US economy and put China in the cat bird’s seat..because all the financial support is dependent on them purchasing our Treasury notes.
Drug and arms smuggling has escalated, and back home the SUICIDE rate is surging because of post traumatic stress. Families are disjointed, troops are serving their 4th or 5th tours of duty, and morale in many areas is low.
But there’s one silver lining in the dark cloud; Bush’s pals have become stinking rich by the war actions...and that’s all that REALLY matters.
So Mr. Bush, historians may yet honor you for enriching your friends and creating more new millionaires than at any time in history.
You’d better hope they have SOMETHING good to say. If the corpses of the dead could rise...I’d bet they’d have a few choice footnotes to add!
