How Bush’s policies doomed New Orleans
31 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
51 commentsIt appears that the money has been moved in the president’s budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that’s the price we pay. Nobody locally is happy that the levees can’t be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us. Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana; New Orleans Times-Picayune, June 8, 2004

31 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
CRAWFORD - Cindy Sheehan has received a letter of support from Karl W. B. Schwarz, a former Republican, who earlier this year announced his independent candidacy for President, subject to the 2008 election.
Schwarz is author of the book "One Way Ticket to Crawford, Texas."
He wrote to Sheehan: "I have been watching with admiration your brave stand against President Bush and his refusal, and even fear, of speaking with any of the persons who have lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan on (…) -
The Clock is Ticking, Mr. Bush

5 commentsI’m confused.
The news report today, that in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, said that five million people in the Gulf states would be without power for 6 to 8 weeks, was followed by an advisement that gas for your car, home heating oil and natural gas prices would rise.
Maybe I’m not the brightest bulb in the box, but aren’t we still in a free-market, supply and demand economy? And with five million people not using much of our precious energy supplies - not driving, not using (…) -
The Roller Coaster Ride
31 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsBy Monica Benderman
In an amusement park that I used to take our kids to, there was a roller coaster ride called the “Corkscrew.” It turned, and twisted and even reversed itself and went backwards after the first full cycle of track was completed. We would stand in line for an hour just to have a 3 minute ride, only to get back in the hour long line and do it again. We paid for this, and at the end of the day, I wondered why as we left the park with heads spinning and knees trying to (…) -

"Sarah, if the people had ever known the truth about what we Bushes have done to this nation, we would be chased down in the streets and lynched." Bush 41 to reporter Sarah McClendon, Dec. 1992
It’s an amazing thing. Doctors’ offices in New York and Washington will likely be standing-room-only in a couple of months. I can see it now — the look on a nurse’s face when she asks the vacuous, target-eyed media twits when they are "due," and each one chirps happily, "May (…) -
The Peaceful Occupation of Crawford (Day 23)

In My Life, I Loved You More
Since I began my vigil in Crawford, an average of 2.69 per day of our nation’s brave and noble troops died in Iraq for George’s cowardly and ignoble war. 2.69 families per day have been devastated for no reason except that: we have to continue killing American soldiers because so many have been killed already. My heart and soul go out to these families who had a loved one killed so needlessly and avoidably.
How many more are (…) -
Berlin : US bases undermine sovereignty, says Lafontaine
30 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsBy Bertrand Benoit in Berlin
Oskar Lafontaine, one of two lead candidates for the Left party at the German election, has called into question the presence of US military bases in the country, saying they undermine Germany’s sovereignty.
Addressing the congress of the party, an alliance of Social Democratic dissidents and neo-Communists, in Berlin on Saturday, Mr Lafontaine said: "We are not a sovereign country; as long as the US can operate from here, we are a participant in the Iraq (…) -
In the Struggle Over the Iraq War, Women Are on the Front Line

WASHINGTON
As President Bush traveled around the country last week, he got caught up in a battle of women.
Women - mothers and widows of men killed in Iraq - were the most vocal leaders of antiwar protests in Texas, Idaho and Utah that dogged Mr. Bush all week. Another woman, Tammy Pruett, whose husband and five sons have served in Iraq, was showcased by the White House as a pro-war counterpoint.
The tableau was a striking change from the 1960’s protests against (…)
