The story goes that when the nonviolent Jesus was born into abject poverty to homeless refugees on the outskirts of a brutal empire, angels appeared in the sky to impoverished shepherds singing, “Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth!” That child grew up to become, in Gandhi’s words, “the greatest nonviolent resister in the history of the world,” and was subsequently executed by the empire for his insistence on justice.
This weekend, as tens of millions of (…)

What I heard about Iraq in 2005
27 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsby Eliot Weinberger
In 2005 I heard that Coalition forces were camped in the ruins of Babylon. I heard that bulldozers had dug trenches through the site and cleared areas for helicopter landing pads and parking lots, that thousands of sandbags had been filled with dirt and archaeological fragments, that a 2600-year-old brick pavement had been crushed by tanks, and that the moulded bricks of dragons had been gouged out from the Ishtar Gate by soldiers collecting souvenirs. I heard that the (…) -
40 + Jewish & Palestinian organisations defy EU secrecy
27 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
Dismayed by the refusal of EU to publish their own Ramallah and East Jerusalem Heads of Mission findings regarding Israeli state actions towards non Jewish residents of East Jerusalem, Jewish and other peace groups and Palestinian Solidarity campaigns around Europe have decided they must take matters into their own hands.
Every organisation listed below will publish the Report on their websites. A copy of the report can be found on the PSC www.palestinecampaign.org
The day after the (…) -
Dems-cowards or on the take?
27 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
5 commentsDemocrats in congress (with a few notable and honorable exceptions) have been acting, for the longest time, as cowards, like the Chamberlains and Weimar Republicans in the 20’s and 30’s. Capitulation is their middle name.
But upon further thought, maybe most Dems are also beholden to the corporate kings who have been generous funders of the sociopath party and thereby dictate the course of action in the world. Why else would most so-called Democrats be so loath to speak up and out against (…) -

I have been in Europe for 2 weeks now. I have been toasted by the Mayor of London, Ken Livingston, and greeted by Foreign Ministers, a Vice President and members of the various Parliaments. Those stories are for another article.
My highest honor both here in the States and in Europe now is meeting with the families of children murdered in George Bush’s War of Terror against the world.
No matter if we all speak differently accented English, Spanish, or the heavy (…) -
U.S. Airstrikes Take Toll on Civilians. Eyewitnesses Cite Scores Killed in Marine Offensive in Western Iraq
24 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentBy Ellen Knickmeyer
RAMADI, Iraq — U.S. Marine airstrikes targeting insurgents sheltering in Iraqi residential neighborhoods are killing civilians as well as guerrillas along the Euphrates River in far western Iraq, according to Iraqi townspeople and officials and the U.S. military.
Just how many civilians have been killed is strongly disputed by the Marines and, some critics say, too little investigated. But townspeople, tribal leaders, medical workers and accounts from witnesses at the (…) -
Israel & Palestine: A Way Out?
24 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentBy Conn Hallinan
In a 2002 Le Monde Diplomatique article titled ’Constructing Catastrophe,’ Israeli journalist Amon Kapeliouk challenged one of the central myths about the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. To wit: that Palestinian President Yasir Arafat was offered a great deal at the Camp David talks in July 2000, but turned it down and launched Intifada II.
What is so damaging about the Camp David myth is that it perpetuates the fable that the Palestinian side of (…) -

THE ZAMORA AGENDA AGAINST IMPERIALISM AND REFORMISM
TO THE PEOPLE OF VENEZUELA AND THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD:
Two great threats are formiing over our nation, over the Venezuelan people, and its Boliviariano Revolution: the U.S. Empire is attempting to truncate the refounding of our nation and to recuperate our soil to serve its own interests and Reformism , represented by a new bureucratic corrupt political caste.
It is difficult to define (…) -

In today’s Haaretz Magazine, Gideon Levy tells the story of Mahmoud Shawara, a 43-year-old father of nine, who left for work on his donkey one day from his house in the village of Nuaman, near Bethlehem, was arrested by border policemen, and, after he refused to accompany the soldiers without his donkey, was tied to the donkey. The frightened donkey then galloped toward the village; Shawara sustained serious injuries all over his body, and ultimately died (…) -
Iraq’s election result: a divided nation
23 December 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentBy Patrick Cockburn
Iraq is disintegrating. The first results from the parliamentary election last week show the country is dividing between Shia, Sunni and Kurdish regions.
Religious fundamentalists now have the upper hand. The secular and nationalist candidate backed by the US and Britain was humiliatingly defeated.
The Shia religious coalition has won a total victory in Baghdad and the south of Iraq. The Sunni Arab parties who openly or covertly support armed resistance to the US (…)
