WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI on Tuesday asked the U.S. Congress for sweeping new powers to seize business or private records, ranging from medical information to book purchases, to investigate terrorism without first securing approval from a judge.
Valerie Caproni, FBI general counsel, told the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee her agency needed the power to issue what are known as administrative subpoenas to get information quickly about terrorist plots and the activities of foreign (…)

Fabricating Intelligence as a Justification for War

The Lie of Preventative War
Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop speaks on the morning of the Russia invasion to journalists in Berlin. Despite the existence of a nonagression pact, Hitler sent 3 million German soldiers to invade the Soviet Union under the code name "Barbarossa." The nazi leadership justified the attack as a preventative strike to hinder an alleged attack being planned by Stalin.

Democrats may extend Iraq war memo probe to London
24 May 2005U.S. congressmen are investigating the British government’s role in helping to prepare for the war in Iraq.
Senior Democrats in Congress are considering sending a delegation to London to investigate Britain’s role in the preparations for the war, which was launched in March 2003. They have seized on a leaked Downing Street memo, first published three weeks ago by The Sunday Times, as evidence American lawmakers were misled about Bush’s intentions in Iraq.

Members of Congress unaware of missing 8.8 billion
23 May 2005Last Friday I was on the panel of Bill Maher’s season finale of his HBO show “Real Time.” Bill’s guest by satellite was Senator Norm Coleman from my home state of Minnesota. Because Coleman serves on the homeland security committee, Maher asked him to comment on former homeland security director Tom Ridge’s recent revelation that the Bush administration would often issue terror alerts that he didn’t think were warranted. Could it be that they were using terror alerts politically?
Coleman (…) -
If Stalag 13 had been like US Bagram Detention Facility
23 May 2005Alas, Hogan’s Heroes. And poor LeBeau. He never stood a chance. The second that Sgt. Schultz discovered the receiver in the coffee pot and then sputtered a report to Colonel Klink, who then discovered the comically obvious bugs in his office, LeBeau’s fate was sealed. But there was so much to go through before the sweet kiss of death finally sucked the last breath from the ill-fated Frenchman. Sure, when Klink called Col. Hogan to his office, Hogan expected to do the usual song and dance - (…)

IS GEORGE BUSH A LIAR?
23 May 2005IS GEORGE BUSH A LIAR?
By Peter Fredson
May 23, 2005
The American public has now had 4 years of what is loosely called “Bush Leadership.” According to most polls, about half of the nation thinks G.W.Bush is some kind of heroic or even saintly figure, and the other half thinks he is a shallow smirking strutting popinjay who is determined to destroy the democracy he found intact when he was given the Presidency by the Supreme Court.
Many people have charged that he has a firm (…) -

Custer Battles Whistle-Blower Suit May Set Course on Iraq Fraud Cases
23 May 2005To its accusers, the security company Custer Battles exemplifies corporate profiteering in postinvasion Iraq, when officials were pumping out hastily written contracts for everything from air conditioners to armed guards.
In a lawsuit now in federal court, two former associates of the company say it bilked the American-led coalition out of millions, turning in hugely inflated invoices from phantom supplier companies among other misdeeds. If successful, the suit, brought under the False (…)
