In 1969 I was spending my second summer working in Ben Tillman’s crew refinishing desks for the Baltimore City Public School system. They only paid us as teachers for the ten months school was in session, and needless to say it wasn’t much, so we were glad to have a chance to earn some extra money. We’d spend a couple of weeks at each school, sanding down the desktops and re-varnishing them, although the latter task was reserved for Tiny Shaw, a huge man who could handle the spray gun and (…)

U.S. Creates Its Antithesis in Iraq
16 December 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By Nicola Nasser*
Nowhere it is more obvious than in Iraq that the existence of an election law, elections themselves and the constitution they are based on are not indicators of democracy or legitimacy, because these mechanisms are merely symbols of the antithesis of the mechanisms of democracy as practiced back home by the U.S. occupying power.
An editorial of The Washington Post on December 8 hailed the passing two days earlier of an amended version of the 2005 election law by the (…) -

JAZZMAN CHRONICLES. DISSEMINATE FREELY.
By Jack Random
It is a great shame that in America we cannot criticize our nation without being painted in the colors of betrayal and treason by the self-righteous and self-proclaimed defenders of American pride. Yes, even those who only yesterday led the nation to the edge of economic collapse and left our reputation torn and tattered before the eyes of the world retain their hold on power by defining patriotism with unwavering praise and (…) -

WILL OBAMA’S SURGE WORK?
A Primer on the War in Afghanistan
John Chuckman
The most fundamental realities of the war in Afghanistan include the following.
The Taleban is not an invading guerilla force. The word "insurgents" nicely hides the fact that they are natives of the land we have invaded.
Moreover, they are a substantial portion of the population, not a small group.
And they attacked no one.
The 9/11 bunch were mainly Saudis, almost certainly on a (…) -
Once More Through the Slaughter House
14 December 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
By David Glenn Cox
There is an expression that says the quickest path to vegetarianism is through the slaughterhouse. It is true that many times we are complacent with things as they are until reality chomps its teeth firmly into our ass.
I feel certain that the thousands of mid-level GM and Chrysler executives recently put out to permanent pasture due to the restructuring were strong proponents of outsourcing. “Why, boss, we can save $1.75 per car by having this part made in China.” I (…) -

On June 24, 1994, at Fairchild Air Force Base located near Spokane, Washington, an Air Force B-52 bomber crashed at the end of its air show. The aerial demonstration was awesome and chilling to watch. Reckless though it was, it appeared that the commander was in complete control of his craft, confidently demonstrating the might of his nation as (…) -
