Over 100,000 protesters took to the streets of central London yesterday in yet another demonstration against the war in Iraq. The route not surprisingly took in Whitehall, Parliament Square, along Piccadilly before reaching Hyde Park, with a motley of campaigners shouting “Down with Downing Street, “ and “Stop the bombings” as they passed No 10 Downing Street.
Parliament Square and the West End was virtually at a standstill as protestors gathered to give Prime (…)

Tens of thousands of people packed downtown Washington yesterday and marched past the White House in the largest show of antiwar sentiment in the nation’s capital since the conflict in Iraq began.
The demonstration drew grandmothers in wheelchairs and babies in strollers, military veterans in fatigues and protest veterans in tie-dye. It was the first time in a decade that protest groups had a permit to march in front of the executive mansion, and, even though President (…) -

Thousands of protesters against the war in Iraq rallied today in Washington and other U.S. and European cities to demand the return of U.S. troops in what organizers hope will be the largest gathering since the war began more than two years ago.
Protest organizers estimated a crowd of about 200,000 rallied at the Ellipse, then marched around the White House and along Pennsylvania Avenue. Police downgraded the count to about 150,000. The crowd (…) -
I love the smell of Patriotic Dissent in the afternoon!

Ahhhh, I love the smell of Patriotic Dissent in the afternoon!
As we stand here on the grounds of a monument that is dedicated to the Father of our Country, George Washington, we are reminded that he was well known for the apocryphal stories of never being able to tell a lie. I find it so ironic that there is another man here named George who stays in this town between vacations and he seems to never be able to tell the truth. (…) -

24 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
WASHINGTON - Opponents of the war in Iraq are marching by the tens of thousands Saturday in a clamorous day of protest, song and remembrance of the dead, some showing surprisingly diverse political views even as they spoke with one loud voice in wanting U.S. troops home.
The surging crowd, shouting “Bush out now” and “Peace now,” marched in front of the White House and then toward the Washington Monument in an 11-hour marathon of dissent.
They were young people with green hair, nuns (…) -

The first rumors started swirling last spring, in hushed talks in the classroom, amid hallway banter, in lunchtime chats at pizza parlors along Jerome Avenue. Metal detectors were coming to DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx.
By the time the summer school term began, students were noticing the newly installed surveillance cameras along DeWitt Clinton’s stairwells and the shell of a metal detector perched beyond a side door. "The school is on lockdown," one student (…) -
Call for international mobilizations in Geneva. STOP the WTO corporate agenda before Hong Kong
20 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
With December’s Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong in view, WTO members are speeding up negotiations to ensure a successful outcome. The collapse of the trade talks in Cancun still in mind, the WTO changed their negotiating strategy. Negotiators will seek to resolve major conflicting issues in Geneva during General Council meetings - thus avoiding the public scrutiny and popular pressures that contributed to previous deadlocks. Decisions would thus be taken in an even more opaque and (…)

D.C. police have canceled days off and are planning to deploy several hundred officers during an antiwar demonstration next weekend that will include a march near the White House, but officials said they expect no trouble.
Saturday’s rally, part of a weekend of protests and counter-protests, will be the first demonstration allowed to surround the White House in more than a decade. It is the first major rally to occur since a D.C. law that requires police to give (…) -
