Recently, I encountered the term "WPN" (for "what passes for news"). I’d like to propose a related term, "Nuzak." It’s a functional description of how WPN fits into the life of the average Joe, who never reads a newspaper except for the sports section.
Nuzak is like Muzak. It runs in the background. It’s a New York Times headline on the way out of the house. It’s CNN at the airport. It’s Fox News at home whileJoe is really doing something else. The purpose of Nuzak is to (…)

An Open Letter To The Mainstream Media
18 May 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
14 commentsDear Mainstream Media,
Hello. I am the Plaid Adder. I am one of those people who posts stuff on the internet under an assumed name. Unlike "Jeff Gannon," however, I am not under the mistaken impression that I am a real journalist. I am a lunatic with internet access. I’ve always been ready to admit that. And it’s because I don’t work for a ’legitimate,’ branded, American media outlet that it drives me absolutely fucking NUTS to see you people CAVE to this bullshit administration!
I meant (…) -

The media must have been flipping out recently. Terri Schiavo was gone, Scott Peterson was in jail, Martha Stewart was out of jail and Michael Jackson could only make news when he showed up for court in his jammies. My gawd! What are we gonna report on?

Bush asked to explain UK war memo- CNN only US media to maintain credibility
12 May 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
14 commentsWASHINGTON (CNN) — Eighty-nine Democratic members of the U.S. Congress last week sent President George W. Bush a letter asking for explanation of a secret British memo that said "intelligence and facts were being fixed" to support the Iraq war in mid-2002.
The timing of the memo was well before the president brought the issue to Congress for approval.
The Times of London newspaper published the memo — actually minutes of a high-level meeting on Iraq held July 23, 2002 — on May 1. (…) -

Secret Service records raise new questions about discredited conservative reporter
25 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsIn what is unlikely to stem the controversy surrounding disgraced White House correspondent James Guckert, the Secret Service has furnished logs of the writer’s access to the White House after requests by two Democratic congressmembers.
The documents, obtained by Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) through a Freedom of Information Act request, reveal Guckert had remarkable access to the White House. Though he wrote under the name Jeff Gannon, the records show that he (…) -
With US Casualties Mounting, US Press Unable to Report Accurately in Iraq
17 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
12 commentsThis morning on the NBC news show, "Meet the Press", two reporters who were in Iraq, NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski & New York Times’ Dexter Filkins both told moderator Tim Russert that it was difficult and dangerous for reporters to venture outside the fortified "Green Zone." Both reporters stated they they themselves rarely ventured outside the Green Zone. Naturally, they both made statements to the effect that "things are getting better" in Iraq.
Are Americans so blind and stupid that they (…) -

As they slowly hack democracy to death, we’re as alone - we citizens - as we’ve ever been, protected only by the dust-covered clichés of the nation’s founding: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”
It’s time to blow off the dust and start paying the price.
The media are not on our side. The politicians are not on our side. It’s just us, connecting the dots, fitting the fragments together, crunching the numbers, wanting to know why (…) -
US ’smuggles wounded troops home’ under cover of darkness
11 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentBy Andrew Buncombe in Washington
The Pentagon has been accused of smuggling wounded soldiers into the US under cover of darkness to avoid bad publicity about the number of troops being injured and maimed in Iraq. The media have also been prevented from photographing wounded soldiers when they arrive at hospital.
Records show that flights from military bases in Germany arrive in the US only at night. Officials say this is purely the result of flight-scheduling pressures and is not a (…) -
America’s Broken Electoral System: Get over it, says mainstream press
11 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
5 commentsThroughout 2004, the “swing state” of Ohio was in the media spotlight. Prior to the election, it was a site of alleged voter fraud and suppression; as Extra! reported (12/04), the news media tended to portray the charges as partisan ploys rather than significant threats to the electoral process.
Then, on November 2, Ohio became this election’s Florida: Once again a tight race hinged on the electoral votes of a state too close to call. At the end of the night, with only about 130,000 votes (…)
