The saintly Republican idea about Iraq was to depose a horrendous Nazi-like dictator with whom we were already at war over the "no fly zones," the "oil for food" program, nuclear inspections, and the inconclusive end to the previous war. It seemed perfectly obvious given that we were already at war and that we had just failed to preemptively strike Afghanistan (which appeared to be 1000 times less threatening than Iraq) on 9/10 or earlier. This is a simple point but nevertheless beyond the (…)

20 September 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentby Robert Higgs
Anyone who has done even a little reading about the theory and practice of war, whether in political theory, international relations, theology, history, or common journalistic commentary, has encountered a sentence of the form “war is horrible, but . . . .” In this construction, the phrase that follows the conjunction explains why a certain war was (or now is or someday will be) an action that ought to have been (or ought to be) undertaken notwithstanding its admitted (…) -

Imperialism 101 - The US Addiction to War, Mayhem and Madness - Part II - by Stephen Lendman part I
Part I of this article explained that the US was always a warrior, imperial nation, building it in steps and addicted to its madness. First we took it from its original inhabitants; then we expanded it beyond our borders by seizing the half of Mexico we wanted; later we established colonies abroad; and now, our method of choice is to rule the world through compliant leaders in client states (…) -

1 commentThe Moral Bankruptcy of Israel’s Founding Idea
The Coming Collapse of Zionism
By KATHLEEN CHRISTISON Former CIA Analyst
Is it only observers outside the conventional mainstream who have noticed that by its murderous assault on Lebanon and simultaneously on Gaza, Israel finally exposed, for even the most deluded to see, the total bankruptcy of its very founding idea?
Can it be that the deluded are still deluded? Can it truly still be that Israel’s bankruptcy is evident only to those (…) -

Nobel Peace Prize Winners Take Aim at U.S.
By CHASE SQUIRES, AP
DENVER (Sept. 17) - Ten Nobel Peace Prize laureates called for world peace and took aim at U.S. policy makers, asking an enthusiastic crowd of 7,000 youth to demand that the United States pull back its military, spread its wealth and offer aid to developing countries.
Only the Dalai Lama, whose speech at the three-day PeaceJam convention at the University of Denver was interrupted when a fire alarm went off, did not take a (…) -

Imperialism 101 - The US Addiction to War, Mayhem and Madness - Part I - by Stephen Lendman
The US-led aggression in the Middle East and the three failed attempts to oust Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez since 2002 (with a fourth now planned and likely to be implemented soon) are just the latest examples of this country’s imperial agenda and the "new world order" it has in mind. The way this country now engages throughout the world isn’t much different than what it’s done close to home and (…) -

2 commentsSen. Graham: White House Held Military Lawyers In 5 Hour Meeting and ‘Tried To Force Them To Sign A Prepared Statement’
This morning, President Bush was questioned about Gen. Colin Powell’s letter criticizing White House legislation that would authorize torture. Bush tried to downplay Powell’s letter by pointing to another letter signed by the military’s top uniformed lawyers saying they supported Bush’s plan:
BUSH: There’s all kinds of letters coming out - and today, by the way, (…)
