Factions on the Left have called for "Support for the Iraqi Resistance" and criticized those who don’t endorse the call. For example, at this year’s Left Forum, Anthony Arnove and Tariq Ali debated Stephen Shalom and Joanne Landy on this issue, with the first two arguing for supporting the resistance. Some commentators even refer to this resistance as "freedom fighters in Iraq." My sympathies are with the other side. While one might argue for some abstract "right to resist occupation," what (…)

Binding the Hands of Torturers

2 commentsWhen the Senate voted this week to bring America’s chain of military prison camps under the rule of law, President Bush threatened a veto. The White House explained his objections by saying the measure would bind the government’s hands. Yes, exactly. The rules would finally bind military prisons to democratic values and the standards of behavior recognized by every other civilized nation. They would bind the government to a code of conduct that will help protect those in the nation’s (…)

Left Margin : BUSH’S ENTOURAGE

My good friend - who’s usually right about such things - insists that in this case what is apparent is probably real. The Bush Administration really did appoint Karen Hughes to conduct a campaign to improve the image of our country in the Islamic world. There is no hidden agenda. She’s supposed to go around publicly holding court in places like Saudi Arabia and Turkey, ’listening’ and saying good things about the good people back here at home. Hughes is not carrying secret (…) -

DC Observations of 9/24/05
7 October 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
I’ve had a history of staying out of politics. I’ve had a past of not reading the newspaper, of not watching the news, and also of not paying any mind at all to history and how it affects us today. My views have currently been changing, when it struck me as to how selfish and ignorant a stand such as this can be. Our government has been hard at work, not protecting our freedoms, but infringing on them, causing us to lose our rights and liberty’s bit by bit, law after ever restricting law. (…)

Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defence with our peaceful methods and goals.(Dwight D.Eisenhower).

Bush’s speech today at the National Endowment for Democracy was loaded with what author Mark Crispin Miller has observed as Bush’s pathological tendency for "projectivity."
"Projectors are those people who consistently attack others for the things they hate most in themselves. When Bush talks about Saddam Hussein, he’s talking about himself . . . What’s significant about Bush’s projectivity is that (…) -

Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it." - US General Douglas MacArthur (One of the most decorated soldiers in the history of the United States military)
