The Bush Administration and Republican Congressional leaders have plenty of reason to be worried. Large majorities of Americans believe the country is going in the wrong direction, that Bush doesn’t share their priorities, that the war in Iraq wasn’t worth it, and that the President can’t be trusted. Most people can’t think of anything Congress has done except for intruding in the Terri Schiavo case, and almost everyone disapproved of that. Democrats in Congress, while still not earning high (…)

FINALLY: A DEGREE IN PUBLIC DIPLOMACY
23 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentFINALLY: A DEGREE IN PUBLIC DIPLOMACY
By William Fisher
As the U.S. faces increasingly negative attitudes around the world, the previously arcane subject of public diplomacy has become a serious issue in the Bush Administration, Congress, universities, think-tanks and with ordinary citizens.
“Why do they hate us?” is being asked in more places and by more kinds of Americans than ever before.
As widely reported, repeated polls by reputable opinion organizations such as the Pew (…) -
Did Karl Rove Lie to the FBI?

21 commentsDid Karl Rove Lie to the FBI?
By Jason Leopold
Looks like Karl Rove did break the law, the same federal law that got Martha Stewart sentenced to six months in prison.
It now appears that Rove, President Bush’s chief of staff, may have lied to the FBI in October 2003-a federal crime-when he was questioned by federal agents who were investigating the source responsible for leaking the true identity of an undercover CIA operative to the media.
During questioning by the FBI about his (…) -

Bush picks judge John Roberts Jr.
22 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsPeter Baker and Jim Vandehei, Washington Post
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Bush nominated federal appellate Judge John G. Roberts Jr. for the Supreme Court on Tuesday night, passing over several female candidates to replace the retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor in favor of a well-regarded litigator with conservative credentials and friends in both parties.
Bush introduced his choice for the nation’s 109th justice in a prime-time White House ceremony broadcast live on national (…) -
Former Intelligence Officers De-Spin Rightwing Assault on Valerie Wilson
21 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
One of the pieces of disinformation being peddled by the Save-Rove gang (see the item below) is that Valerie Wilson wasn’t really undercover. So the leak? No harm done and no crime committed (since the relevant law says a leak only counts as a crime if the exposed officer was working under cover). But how do they know that Joseph Wilson’s wife wasn’t a clandestine officer in a serious manner? Well, they don’t. There’s nothing on the public record that fully explains her duties at the CIA. (…)

The Wayward Media

By Ernest Partridge, Co-Editor
Here are three mini-essays tied together with a common theme: the media. “Access” - To what?
Its no secret: the former watchdogs of the American media have been transformed into Bush’s lapdogs. Whenever a potential White House or GOP scandal rears its ugly head, you can count on the news media to be otherwise engaged. If you’ve paid any attention to the Tom Delay outrages, Gannon/Guckert, the Downing Street Memos, the civilian casualties in Iraq, The World (…) -

Karl Rove: PARENTS ABANDONED HIM—George Bush Can’t
20 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsToday Bush says he will fire for convictions, not mere leaks. The consensus of lawyers is that Karl Rove will be indicted in the Valerie Plame outing case — and not for what you think. Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald appears to have a slam-dunk case under Title 18, Sec. 641, USC (which is NOT about outing a covert agent) just as the DOJ did for leaker Jonathan Randel, who got a year in prison. Karl Rove was abandoned by both of his parents — the man he called Dad left home, Rove (…)
