CARACAS, Jun 8 (IPS) - "Where’s the end of the line? Another queue; whatever it takes to get a house," said Ángela Rodríguez as she reached Panteón Plaza in the Venezuelan capital, where thousands of housing rights activists who support President Hugo Chávez gathered after a recent march through the central part of the capital.
Seven or eight out of every 10 of the participants in Sunday’s march were women. Amidst the heat and the chaos in the plaza — there were no (…)

Degrees of Separation, the Numbers Game, and How to Bring Peace to the World
To bring peace to the world we must first understand the consequences of war, specifically how many people it affects. The calculations required to truly understand the number of people that are directly affected by war are quite simple. To get a ballpark estimate, all we have to (…) -

5 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentBaltimore, MD - On Sunday afternoon, June 4, 2006, a Forum, which dealt with the topic of “Iraq, Iran and Militarism,” was held at the Cork Gallery. It is located near the historic Greenmount Cemetery. (1) The event was sponsored by the “Generations for Peace and Democracy,” a progressive group. The speaker at the affair was the popular anti-war activist, Kevin Zeese.
Zeese said, “We know that both parties are selling the country to the highest bidder. So, in a historical context, where (…) -

OLYMPIA - A protest became a melee on Olympia’s waterfront Tuesday as sheriff’s deputies arrested 22 people who stormed the port’s gate. And war protesters were back on the line Wednesday night — as are the deputies.
The protesters hope to disrupt shipments of war supplies heading to Iraq.
For more than a week, the two sides have held their ground on Olympia’s waterfront. The military transport ship Pomeroy continues to load cargo bound for Iraq, including Stryker (…) -
Genetic optimism
3 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsDuring my bike ride this morning I expounded on an epiphany I had a few days ago, that people are fundamentally optimistic, that it’s programmed into their genes. Because of their inherent optimism, people refuse to see problems brewing around them until it’s too late to do anything about them.
If one thinks about it, genetic programming to be optimistic helps propagate one’s genes. After all, without optimism, why would a prehistoric man look for food when he has none, instead of simply (…) -
Cindy Sheehan condemns Australian prime minister as an “illegal combatant”
31 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsBy Richard Phillips
US antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan denounced the Australian government for its participation in the Iraq war and called for the release of David Hicks from Guantánamo Bay and the closure of the notorious US military prison camp at a demonstration in Melbourne last Friday.
Sheehan rejected US and Australian government claims that Guantánamo inmates “did not deserve civil rights” because they were “illegal enemy combatants”. The four-and-a-half-year incarceration of (…) -

"May Day, I Repeat, May Day," Say Vets!

In small towns throughout America there’s a new flurry of concerned activity from grassroots organizers of a most un-likely type. It might even be fair to say that this latest, most determined and focused group is nothing at all like the socialists, hippies, yippies, and liberal rebels from our country’s last major radical movement.
Even if we consider that many of these worried dissenters are the exact same age as protestors from (…) -
Blair in Rome: PRODI PROVOKES THE ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT
27 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsWE DON’T WANT BLAIR IN ROME
In these days we have repeatedly asked the [Romano] Prodi government to abolish the obscene war parade of June 2. Why should the Holiday of the Republic be celebrated with lethal weapons and units of the occupation troops of Iraq and Afghanistan? Why not transform it into a holiday for everyone, eliminating the military presence? No answer: the parade has been confirmed.
We have then asked the new president of the House, Bertinotti [Fausto Bertinotti, former (…) -
Liars’ Club Confab: Bush and Blair at White House

3 comments"All the war-propaganda...screaming, lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting." - George Orwell
On May 25, 2006, President George W. Bush and UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, met in the afternoon at the White House. Their topic was the Iraqi War. The specific purpose of the get together between the war’s two key co-conspirators, "Chicken Hawk" Bush and his "British Poodle" Blair, dealt with this issue: How to continue to sell this unnecessary bloodbath to the (…)
