Julia Ward Howe, the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, became so horrified with the carnage of the Civil War that she began advocating for a Mother’s Day of Peace She published the Mother’s Day Peace Proclamation in 1870. By 1873, 18 cities celebrated Mother’s Day of Peace celebrations - some of these celebrations continued for 30 years. Still today, we have the enduring legacy of Mother’s Day.
Now we are faced with the modern carnage of the occupation of Iraq, and still there are (…)

Code Pink Challenges White House
15 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsWashington, D.C. - On Sunday, May 14, 2006, a colorful protest action, sponsored by “Code Pink: Women for Peace,” was staged directly in front of the White House. It included a mini-parade, a sing along and plenty of roses waving around. The event, a 24-hour vigil, began the day before. Its theme was “Declare Peace on Mother’s Day.” On a warm, but cloudy afternoon, it featured speeches, from 2 to 4 PM, by activists, like: Cindy Sheehan, a leader in the “Gold Star Families for Peace; and (…)

10 commentsMay 12, 2006 "ICH" — — I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it. -Dwight D. Eisenhower
The day that the apparently reformed war-monger, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, envisioned decades ago has finally come. It is time for governments to get out of our way.
I have had a chance since Camp (…) -

Loremo - the 1.5 litres/100 km biodiesel car

10 commentsLoremo - the 1.5 litres/100 km biodiesel car
Loremo is based on the principle of a captive balloon: Whoever sheds ballast, will pick up speed.
The sensational fuel consumption of only 1.5 litres / 100 km is due to the reduction of weight and air resistance and is the result of a productive "struggle" for comfort, design and efficiency. Remembering what is essential does also mean to reduce parts and material as well as to merge functions and, in doing so, also to reduce costs.
The cars (…) -
COMMENTS ON DAVID SIROTA’S NEW BOOK - HOSTILE TAKEOVER

4 commentsComments On David Sirota’s New Book - Hostile Takeover - by Stephen Lendman
I’d like to begin my commentary on David Sirota’s important new book Hostile Takeover with my strong endorsement of his fine work. Everyone should read it to learn what’s really going on around us that affects us all in the most important ways I know and which most people at best only vaguely understand on many if not most of the major issues. Those who read it will learn in stunning and graphic detail how large (…) -
Ray McGovern & Cindy Sheehan to lead March on the White House
10 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
World Can’t Wait just announced their next major protest- October. Anyone else think that’s a little funny?
Last year the Downing Street Memo came out on May 1st, soon after UFPJ announced the big rally for Sept 24th. Why do they always skip over the summer months? Because that’s when the weather is nice, and people might actually have the time to camp and stay.
The crooks in power don’t care if we schedule another weekend protest- the one thing they don’t want is an extended protest (…) -
The Roots of May Day: Today’s marchers are liberals’ best hope.
8 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
By Nelson Lichtenstein
Today’s May Day marches are putting hundreds of thousands on the street and have politicized more people than anything since the height of the civil rights movement. Like every other massive social protest in American history, the events have generated their share of fear. Democrats and some leaders of D.C.-based immigrant groups worry that the call to boycott work and shut down Latino-dependent businesses will generate a backlash. Republicans and nativists see them (…) -

Statement of Purpose International Endowment for Democracy
When someone asked what he thought about Western civilization, Mahatma Gandhi replied, "I think it would be a good idea". We are only saying the same thing about American democracy-"We think it would be a good idea".
Inspired by this idea, a number of progressive American scholars, lawyers and activists have created the International Endowment for Democracy (IED) to highlight- the tragic and rapidly deteriorating state of (…)
