Steve Morse’s hands are rough from years working in sheet metal, and his voice is soft and a little hoarse, as if he were still teaching math to fifth graders from 7 a.m. to sundown, and then volunteering a few hours a week on the G.I. Rights Hotline. Now, he coordinates the Hotline for CCCO, which means part of his job is to say, over and over, to the press: "Last year we got 32,000 calls." Except, as he said Monday night, that number only counts the calls coming over (…)

Blair Faces US Probe Over Secret Iraq Invasion Plan Tony Allen-Mills and Tom Pattinson May 22, 2005 SENIOR American congressmen are considering sending a delegation to London to investigate Britain’s role in preparations for the war in Iraq.
Democratic opponents of President George W Bush have seized on a leaked Downing Street memo, first published three weeks ago by The Sunday Times, as evidence that American lawmakers were misled about Bush’s intentions in Iraq.
A group of 89 (…) -
Information Education is the Key to Social Justics and Peace
22 May 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentIf one is to observe our commercial culture from the perspective ot education and information exchange it can be seen clearly that a social world agenda exists and it is not one of world peace.
From toy stores filled with action figures all ready to attack the "bad guys", movies filled with the acceptance of social violence, and politcial leaders being financially motivated to invade terrorist nations it can be seen that "war" and "social conflict" is part of the accepted and sponsered (…) -
Not-So Endearing Enduring U.S. Military Bases In Iraq
21 May 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
12 commentsIt’s not easy writing about something about which I know very little, but I’m going to try anyway. (Hey, you, in the back. I heard that. It has too stopped me before.)
What I think I’m talking about are the fourteen permanent U.S. military bases currently under construction in Iraq. Yes, that Iraq, the country from which we will militarily withdraw just as soon as we get the word from the completely-free-of-U.S.-influence Iraqi government telling us to go. (Look for snow in Baghdad that (…) -
Debate intensifies over weapons in space
21 May 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsWashington — Reports that the Bush administration plans to adopt a new policy that would more explicitly spell out the military’s commitment to placing offensive and defensive weapons in space are sparking an increasing debate.
Proponents say such weapons are needed to protect the U.S. homeland and satellites in space that provide such crucial military and civilian services as targeting for weapons, global positioning data and satellite TV and radio. They also point out that space has been (…) -
A made in USA terrorist: Luis Posada Carriles
21 May 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
May 19, 2005 - For over a century, our government has made sure that we are never to be told the truth about anything that we have done to other people in Third World countries, especially in Latin America.
With the creation of the School of the Americas, a breeding ground for assassins, and the death squads, we became the greatest human rights violators in the world.
We have become the most hated country in the world, not because we practice democracy or value our freedom. We are hated (…) -
Red, White, and Without a Clue
21 May 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsIn the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, America naively asked in its stunned stupor, "Why do they hate us?" In consoling us, our fearless leaders appealed to our collective sense of superiority and self-righteousness by explaining that the Muslim world (a.k.a. "they") hate us because of what we stand for: freedom, democracy, Mom, baseball, and apple pie. Comforted, we patted ourselves on our collective back for being so gosh-darn wonderful and condemned the savage heathens who wanted nothing (…)

Dear President Bush

1 commentDear President Bush
I hope this letter finds you well.
Actually, I hope this letter finds you, period. I understand that you do not read newspapers, and that you are refusing to listen to bad news. If you were still a spoiled rich kid down in Texas, I guess it would be okay for you to wall yourself off from the rest of the world, protected and insulated by the family fortune, but you are not in Texas any more, you are in MY White House, you are there to do a job, and a major (…) -

By Peter Fredsib
May 21, 2005
Today I listened to C-Span featuring a Major General in charge of recruiting for the U.S. Army. He was very cogent and knowledgeable. He explained the training that recruiting N.C.O.s must go through and what level of competence is expected of them. He talked about the many difficulties recruitment has faced, such as discrimination because of gender, sex, education, economics and other factors such as homosexuality. He was (…) -
