Public Can Force Iraq Troop Withdrawal, Lawmakers and Critics Say Emerging Splits Over Occupation Policy Give Hope to Antiwar Activists
Jan 28 - As Congress weighed the Bush administration’s recent proposal for $75 billion in supplemental funding to bolster military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan, some individual members of Congress have diverged from the predominant Washington agenda with proposals for a complete, immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq. The polarization in (…)

Growing number of soldiers oppose — and refuse to report for — the war in Iraq
28 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
41 comments’They can’t throw us all in jail’ Growing number of soldiers oppose — and refuse to report for — the war in Iraq
The Pentagon doesn’t like to talk about it. But as the war in Iraq becomes ever more violent and prolonged, an increasing number of soldiers are opposing the war — up to and including refusing to fight.
Thus far, the numbers, compared to Vietnam, are still small. The Pentagon estimated in 2003 that nearly 3,000 soldiers had deserted — that is, had been AWOL for more than a (…) -
Press Conference Shows Bush in Denial about Iraq Reality
28 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
The first presidential news conference of the Bush administration’s second term was dominated by the subject Bush sought to avoid in his inaugural address: the growing crisis of the US occupation regime in Iraq.
The press conference was called on short notice, only hours after the crash of a Marine helicopter in the western Iraqi desert that killed 31 US soldiers, the greatest loss of life on the US side in a single event since Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Bush’s (…) -
Iraqis To Bush - What Have We Done To Deserve This?
28 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentDespite Bush’s endless hypocritical assertions about how we have brought freedom to Iraq, the truth is that almost all of the people in that country who have managed to survive the military attacks, have lost loved ones and had their lives ruined.
Iraqis have been telling us to leave ever since we arrived. They want to run their own country and they want an end to the torture and killing. They’re willing to take the risk of believing their lives will be better without the involvement of (…) -
UN rights expert accuses Israel of war crimes over house demolitions
27 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
The UN rapporteur for human rights in the occupied territories accused the Israeli government of war crimes for the punitive destruction of Palestinian homes in a report released here Thursday.
"It is difficult to resist the conclusion that punitive house demolitions constitute serious war crimes," John Dugard, a South African law professor, said in the report.
Dugard said the destruction of Palestinian homes following acts of hostility against Israeli forces were carried out as (…) -
HOLOCAUST IN DISGUISE
27 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 comments2 YEARS AGO, A INDEPEPENDENT BRITISH TEAM, WANTED TO EXPERIENCE LIFE IN OCCUPIED PALESTINE.
Saturday. As we jumped on our buses at 8 am we were told to expect confrontation. It was a lovely spring day, everything is peaceful, the birds are singing, and spring flowers. We arrived at the first checkpoint and the Army were there ready to stop us. With smiles on their lips and weapons in their hands they said, “You cannot and will not pass.” We jumped out of our buses and all demonstrated (…) -
History’s BIGGEST FISH STORY:

2 commentsHistory’s BIGGEST FISH STORY:
And then you read the appalling little story about how BushCo is now "taking steps" to further the investigation into why their original intelligence on Iraq was so painfully, treasonously, colon-clenchingly wrong, why they thought Saddam had giant Costco-sized warehouses stacked to the rafters with snarling nukes and nasty biotoxins and active warheads when, in fact, he had nothing but a couple Dumpsters full of rusty 20-year-old shell casings and a bucket of (…) -
What the US has in store for Iran

3 commentsREADING BETWEEN THE LINES What the U.S. has in store for Iran By Lance Selfa | Janury 28, 2005 |
A FEW hours before President George Bush gave his inauguration address promising to rid the world of tyranny, Vice President Dick Cheney made a few comments that tell more about where the administration is heading.
Yukking it up with right-wing talk show host Don Imus on MSNBC, Cheney placed Iran at the “top of the list” of “potential trouble spots” that the Bush administration was determined (…) -
No, honestly, its not an occupation...
27 January 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsTHE BUSH administration and its media cheerleaders will declare the “dawning of democracy” in Iraq no matter what happens on January 30. They hope that enough Iraqis manage to cast ballots that the results lend legitimacy to the U.S. occupation of Iraq.
But the elections on January 30 have nothing whatsoever to do with democracy.
U.S. generals claim that the residents of only four of Iraq’s 18 provinces may not be able to “fully participate” in the voting. “Good news,” wrote antiwar (…) -
No Comparison?

No Comparison? January 24th, 2005 : Filed by A! This so-called ill treatment and torture in detention centers, stories of which were spread everywhere among the people, and later by the prisoners who were freed... were not, as some assumed, inflicted methodically, but were excesses committed by individual prison guards, their deputies, and men who laid violent hands on the detainees. Can anyone tell me who said that? Was it:
A) George W. Bush B) John Ashcroft C) Donald Rumsfeld D) (…)
