by Jeff Cohen "Part of my job is being a good listener," Hillary Clinton wrote, in the first line of her letter received today. As a New Yorker, I’m represented by Hillary in the U.S. Senate. Along with her two-page fundraising letter, I received a four-page "2005 Critical National Issues Survey."
But something was missing — something Hillary obviously doesn’t want to hear about: IRAQ. Nowhere in the letter or the questionnaire was that four-letter word.
Hillary’s first question asked (…)

Hypocritical Democrats for the War After All
30 November 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsThe Democrats had devoted 100% of their energy to making us believe they were against the war and against Bush. It seemed that their extremely vigorous and self righteous assurances meant to many that they knew what they were talking about, and even that they had a plan to end the war one way or the other. They tricked a huge part of the electorate into thinking they were right. The Commander in Chief’s approval rating even went way down to around 36% while his troops are bleeding and dying (…)

The Real McCain

Over the Senate’s August recess, John McCain returned to Arizona to quash a brewing conservative insurgency in his home state. The Arizona Republican Assembly, a grassroots right-wing group, had recently censured McCain for "ignoring the opinions of his constituents expressed in numerous polls and personal pleas." The anti-immigrant Minuteman vigilantes had rallied on the Arizona-Mexico border in protest of his progressive immigration policy. Discord gripped the state GOP (…) -
Failure of Leadership; Republicans In Charge
23 November 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentGeorge Bush’s 37% popularity offers an opportunity to highlight the results of Republican failures. Under the leadership of our self-anointed “War President”, our foreign policy has grown increasingly delusional. Republicans in Congress have spent and borrowed trillions, for the benefit of the wealthy, while cutting vital aid to working-class Americans.
We’re locked in two land wars in a hostile region. Neither war can nor will end without withdrawal, for radical Islamic terrorists pledge (…) -
Corruption Inquiry Threatens to Ensnare Lawmakers
22 November 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
By PHILIP SHENON
WASHINGTON - The Justice Department has signaled for the first time in recent weeks that prominent members of Congress could be swept up in the corruption investigation of Jack Abramoff, the former Republican superlobbyist who diverted some of his tens of millions of dollars in fees to provide lavish travel, meals and campaign contributions to the lawmakers whose help he needed most.
The investigation by a federal grand jury, which began more than a year ago, has created (…) -

RYE BROOK, N.Y. — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq would be "a big mistake."
While professing "the greatest respect" for Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania, the ex-Marine who called for a troop pullout last week, Clinton said, "I think that would cause more problems for us in America."
On the other hand, (…) -
GOP’s New War On The Poor Designed To Accomodate the Nation’s Wealthiest 0.2%

In a shocking but nevertheless not surprising maneuver U.S. House Republicans are attempting to introduce a bill that will cause serious damage to the already precarious existence of the nation’s 37 million poor.
In a multi-pronged attack the Republicans have endeavered to target the safety net that the nation’s children and those living in poverty rely on.
Programs targeted include food stamps, school lunch programs, student aid for college, child support (…) -
McKinney: Republicans seek to silence dissent on Iraq war
20 November 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
6 commentsThe Republicans in this House have done a heinous thing: they have insulted one of the deans of this House in an unthinkable and unconscionable way.
They took his words and contorted them; they took his heartfelt sentiments and spun them. They took his resolution and deformed it: in a cheap effort to silence dissent in the House of Representatives.
The Republicans should be roundly criticized for this reprehensible act. They have perpetrated a fraud on the House of Representatives (…) -

As the Democrats rage about the war — 3 years too late — and the Bush Administration huffs and puffs about the Democrats playing politics with an issue and rewriting history, I felt the need to re-read some of the remarks made by Vice President Al Gore at the Commonwealth Club on September 9th, 2002, prior to the vote (…) -
Iraq Cannot Be Won

1 commentBy Rep. John Murtha
A conservative senior House Democrat and Purple Heart-decorated Vietnam veteran describes the U.S. presence in Iraq as an ’occupation,’ and calls for immediate troop withdrawal.
Following is the transcript of a speech by conservative Democratic Representative John Murtha of Pennsylvania on October 17. Murtha is the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriation Committee’s defense panel.
I just spoke to the Democratic Caucus and told them my feelings about the war. And (…)
